Cobb County community leaders have announced the launch of a new organization,
‘Good for Cobb,’ a grassroots organization formed to support a wide-range of initiatives
that ensure a bright future for Cobb County.
Pushing for progress in the areas of economic development, public safety, education,
recreation and transportation were all mentioned as areas of focus for Good for Cobb. The
organization’s first action was a vote to declare the move of the Atlanta Braves to Cobb
County as “Good for Cobb” indicating support for the proposal and a desire for continued
involvement and promotion leading up to Opening Day 2017.
John Loud, President of LOUD Security based in Cobb County, will serve as the
Chairman of Good for Cobb. Justin O’Dell, partner in the law firm O’Dell and O’Neal, will
serve as the Vice-Chairman, and Donna Shaw, Associate Broker at Re-Max of Atlanta, will
serve as the Treasurer.
Said Loud, “We are excited to announce the formation of ‘Good for Cobb.’ The core
mission is as the name says: promote efforts and proposals that are Good for Cobb County.
This group of diverse individuals is joined together to spread the truth about endeavors that
will continue Cobb’s success, to build a sense of community pride, and to send a message
to the people across this county that we should be proud of Cobb and should loudly support
and promote things that are Good for Cobb.”
“Too often, projects, developments and initiatives in Cobb County fail to receive the
grassroots support and input from the community that they truly deserve. Rather than allow
a small, but very vocal minority to continue to attack each and every idea that is presented,
it is time for the people in Cobb, around the county and across the state to know that the
leaders and representatives in the community from education, business, social services and
the non-profit sector support Cobb County and its future,” added O’Dell.
Good for Cobb also made clear that the
Braves will be a top focus. Said Loud, “In the
future, there will be many worthy initiatives
to support but for now we are laser focused
on promoting why the Braves choosing Cobb
County as their new home Good for Cobb.
Their move will result in over a billion dollars in
economic investment, thousands of new jobs and
is already spurring additional economic growth
throughout the region. We want folks to know
that it’s good to proud of the Braves moving here.
We want to be a sounding board for ideas related
to transportation and economic development as
the project moves forward.”

COBB CHAMBERS PRESENTS HEALTH HERO AWARD
The Cobb Chamber presented its 2015 Health Hero Award to two recipients at its First
Monday Breakfast, sponsored by WellStar, on Feb. 5 at the Cobb Galleria Centre. The
award recognized the outstanding accomplishments of one individual and one organization
who have made a significant impact on the health of the Cobb County community.
The prestigious award, designed by Lillie Glassblowers, was presented to the winners by
Dr. Cris Eaton-Welch, the 2015 Chairwoman of the Cobb Health and Wellness Committee.
With a record number of well-qualified nominations, the Cobb Chamber honored the
achievements of two noteworthy recipients who have each made remarkable strides toward
a healthier community.
The individual Health Hero Award was presented
to Cindy Donald, founder of the Cindy Donald Dreams
of Recovery Foundation. After being paralyzed in
2005, Donald saw the overwhelming need for therapy
but knew of the enormous costs that came with it.
She created the Cindy Donald Dreams of Recovery
Foundation in hopes of helping better the lives of
those in need of therapy. Through this organization,
she has helped 26 individuals with spinal cord or brain
injuries. In doing so, these individuals have been able
to improve their overall health by preventing pressure
sores, improving cardiovascular health and some even
are able to now walk. Cindy is pictured at left. To learn

The WellStar Trauma Program was presented to the Health Hero Award for a deserving
organization. With a dedicated trauma staff on site 24 hours a day, this trauma team plays
a key role in helping hundreds of patients survive traumatic accidents. That has never been
more apparent than on April 29, when a gunman entered the Fed Ex distribution center in
Kennesaw and opened fire. Six gunshot victims were taken to Kennestone, some of them
with life threatening injuries, and all survived. It is a testament to the strength, skill and
speed of the Trauma team that all the patients were able to walk out of the hospital. Three
years ago, before Kennestone had a Trauma Department, those patients would have been
taken to a downtown Atlanta hospital, costing valuable time for those patients. While their
response to the FedEx shooting was remarkable, it is representative of the work they do
every day. From January 2013 to March 2014, the WellStar Trauma Department treated
470 patients with serious injuries who survived their specific trauma due to the world-class
care they received.

Cobb EMC seeks applicants for new
scholarships
$5000 Scholarships Available to High School Seniors
Cobb EMC is proud to offer the newly established Cobb EMC Community Foundation
Scholarship. The fourteen scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded to
eligible high school seniors with a primary residence served by Cobb EMC. Students who
apply for the scholarship must be accepted in an undergraduate degree program at any
accredited two- or four-year university or college, or in an undergraduate degree program
at any accredited vocational or technical institute. In addition, applicants are required to
complete the two-page application and write a two-page autobiographical sketch, and essay
with reference to future plans and goals. The annual scholarships are funded and will be
administered by the Cobb EMC Community Foundation Board in May. To learn more

of Marietta served lunch at MUST
Ministries, our Rotarian of the Year
Holly Walquist empathized aloud
her concerns that the 75 diners that
day were inadequately clothed for
such subfreezing weather. The
Rotary Clubs of Marietta and
Marietta Metro sprang into action
to meet this pressing challenge. In
a matter of hours, Metro’s president
Bill White and Dawn McEachern,
president of the Rotary Club of
Marietta, hammered out plans to publicize collections of winter clothing at each club’s next
meeting.
Marietta Metro met first on Monday offsite at Reworx, the electronics-recycling arm
of Nobis Works directed by our honorary Rotarian, Connie Kirk. Since Monday’s weather
was damp and foggy, Rotarian John Bonhant, the general manager of Reworx, graciously
allowed a 14 cubic foot collection box to be placed just inside the plant’s main entrance
doors. Metro Rotarians filled this box with 74-pounds of overcoats, jackets, hats, gloves
and scarfs. On Wednesday, the winter clothing drive moves to the Marietta Conference
Center where the Rotary Club of Marietta meets. Mable Woodson, Assistant Store Manager
at Office Depot on Cobb Parkway in Marietta, provided the double-walled, cardboard box
that greatly assisted the collection drives.

It’s one year since Cherokee Heights started building two Little Free Libraries, the first
LFL’s in Marietta City. On this spectacular sunny holiday, it’s time to reseal the roof shingles
and re-weather strip. These two have been well used and are just about self-sustaining,
gaining about as many contributed books as readers take out. Ron Mercure on Hillside
Avenue and Al Johnson on Awtrey have built new high-rise boxes that look great. The
Rotary Club of Marietta is adding a LFL to each elementary school in Marietta. I understand
that First Landmark Bank has donated all its money from the sale of its artful Christmas
card project to the local Rotary LFL project! Who else has added a box in Marietta? If

GIVING BACK TO MY
CHURCH

I am a Life Scout in Troop 277 at Marietta First
United Methodist Church. In order to reach the rank
of Eagle Scout, I must complete my final project.
By definition, the Eagle Scout service project
must benefit an organization other than Boy
Scouting. I must plan, develop and give leadership
to others in a service project helpful to any religious
institution, any school or the community.
The project I chose is to install concrete pavers
to surround an existing fire pit in The Park on Polk
at Marietta First United Methodist Church. It was
important for my church to be the beneficiary of
this project since I have benefited from so many
programs in this church (Weekday Ministry
Preschool, Fuse Sports, Children’s and Youth
Choirs, Youth Ministry, Acolytes, etc.).
The project was approved by our troop
committee and the council as well as our church
trustees. One of the first steps after the approval
was to fundraise. I asked friends and family to contribute to the $2000 project. Money from
my savings also went towards the total cost.
This project will provide a place for people to stand when using the fire pit for a church
gathering or youth group event. The scouts use the fire pit for troop events and Flag Burning
ceremonies.
The materials for the project include 1500 pavers, 8 tons M10 Granite, paver edging,
screed rails, grand stakes, string, cement, plastic, seed and straw.
With the help of boy scouts, Eagle scouts, and Scout leaders in Troop 277 as well as my
family, the project will be completed by the Spring 2015. I am grateful for all those who
have supported me in the planning and implementation of this project.

Josh Arrants, Mt. Paran Christian School has been selected to represent Mt. Paran and
Cobb County in the District Honor Band. In addition, he auditioned and was selected from
among thousands of talented percussionists state wide to perform in the GMEA All-State
Band in Athens, Ga.
Josh is a 17 year old senior at Mt Paran Christian School, where he is drum captain
in Marching Band, participates in Beta Club, and National Honor Society, maintains a 4.0
average and is on the Headmasters Honor Roll. He plays piano and percussion and plans to
major in music in college. He is also a member of Boy Scout Troop 422 in Kennesaw and

For the second year, Cobb Senior
Services will host the Aging by Design
2015 Series, Summit & EXPO. This event
will take place Saturday, May 2 at Cobb
Galleria Centre. The Summit will run
9:00am-12:00pm with keynote speaker Dr.
William Cooper, cardiothoracic surgeon
and Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at
WellStar Health System. The EXPO will
run 8:00am-2:30pm, concurrently with

you find them there? You can, you know. As a very wise preacher
once suggested, "Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow;
they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his
glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the
grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into
the oven, will he not much more clothe you ..." (Matthew 6:28-30).
To put it the way that our youth do these days, "awesome" sermon.
Near the end of his life, Tuskegee Institute's brilliant teacher and
researcher, George Washington Carver, was asked by an interviewer
what he thought was the most indispensable thing for science in the
modern age. Dr. Carver replied, "The capacity for awe."
Indeed. Awe is what opens our finite minds to the infinite
intelligence of God. Awe is what connects our limited hearts to the limitless love of the
Lord. Awe is what helps us to see God's glory in the sea and the land and the moon and the
sun.
To be sure, the natural world is not the only place we encounter God. As the psalmist
insists in Psalm 19:1-14, ”The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of
the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving
joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes" (vv. 7-8).
Yes, God is revealed in a general way in the glories of nature, but God is revealed in a very
specific way in the revelation of the Word. That is why we gather for worship from week to
week - yes, we get a glorious glimpse of God out in the world, but in here we get, in Paul
Harvey's phrase, "the rest of the story."
Has your religion become routine? A bit commonplace? Even a little blah? Take a
lesson from our youngsters as they explore nature and cultivate again your capacity for
awe. There is a wonderful Hasidic story about the child of a rabbi who used to wander
in the woods. At first his father let him wander, but over time he became concerned. The
woods were dangerous. The father did not know what lurked there. He decided to discuss
the matter with his child. One day, he took his boy aside and said, "You know, I have noticed
that each day you walk into the woods. I wonder, why do you go there?" The boy said to his
father, "I go there to find God."
"That is a very good thing," the father replied gently. "I am glad you are searching
for God. But, my child, don't you know that God is the same everywhere?" "Yes," the boy

Last year on March 16, 2014, the University of Virginia played
Duke University for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship
basketball game. Danny Foley, a sophomore at the Virginia
university (not a player or coach) decided he wanted to get a little
closer to the action of the game. He noticed that at each game, the
team’s assistant coaches wore the same outfits with a bright orange
tie. He found the clothing needed to replicate the outfits, purchased
a $30.00 ticket and went to the championship game. During a TV
timeout he moved confidently past an usher and onto the court and
joined the team’s huddle, sitting on the bench with the coaches and
players.
Virginia won the conference championship defeating Duke 72
-63. Danny joined the team in the handshake line, even shaking the
hand of “Coach K,” Duke’s legendary coach. There are photos from the end of the game
show Danny wearing a championship t-shirt over his outfit, celebrating in the middle of the
confetti-covered arena.
Danny was caught by a member of Virginia’s staff, but he quickly climbed the railings
and disappeared into the stands.
Danny had never practiced with the team. He had no relationship with the coaches or
the players. He dressed, sat, and celebrated like an assistant coach, but it was all an act.
Here is a question for you to consider: is your spiritual life authentic or an act? In

A Race Against Hunger
The 13th Annual Spring Chicken Run—A Race Against Hunger is scheduled for
Saturday, March 28, 2015. This family friendly event offers something for everyone
including a 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Run/Walk, and Tot Trot. Races begin at 8:30 a.m. The
5K is a certified Peachtree Qualifier course
and is overseen by Racing Solutions. The
course is relatively flat and follows along
gently rolling streets in quiet West Cobb
neighborhoods; it is the perfect opportunity
for a personal best running time.
The Spring Chicken Run is hosted on
the campus of Macland Presbyterian Church
located at 3615 Macland Road in Powder

Someone Ordered Your Background
Check? It’s a Scam! Dottie Calina from the Better Business Bureau shares this warning.
Be on the lookout for this creepy email scam that states someone doing a background
check on you.
The fake messages claim someone ordered a background check on you, but it’s really
a ploy to get you to click an infected link.
How the Scam Works:
You receive an email with the subject line: “Someone recently viewed your backgroundinformation.” Curious, you open it. The message claims to be an automatically generated
notification that someone “has just recently ordered the results of your backgroundcheck.”
Interested in who requested information about you? At the bottom of the message is a
link to “find out more about this new-scan.” You may be curious, but don’t click the link!
This email is a scam, and the link will download malware to your computer.
How to Spot a Scam Email:
In general, it’s best not to click on links that come in unsolicited emails. Here are some
more ways to spot a malicious email just in case your spam filter doesn’t catch it.
The email claims to have information about you, but you never signed up for it. Scams
often pretend to be personalized for you, but they are actually blast emails. Don’t fall for
this! If you never signed up for custom email alerts, you shouldn’t be receiving them.
Check out the “From” field: Scammers have the ability to mask email addresses, making
the message appear to come from a legitimate source. But they don’t always use it. Look out
for email addresses that don’t match the brand used in the email message.
Watch for typos, strange phrasing and bad grammar. Scammers can easily copy a brand’s
logo and email format, but awkward wording and poor grammar are typically a giveaway
that the message is a scam. In the example above, the strange hyphens in “backgroundinformation” and “new-scan” are a telltale sign.
Hover over URLs to reveal their true destination. Typically, the hyperlinked text will
say one thing, but the link will point somewhere else. Scammers either set up fake websites
