Requirements for installing RTIFPGA

Question
I have purchased dSPACE RCP&HIL with RTIFPGA. Which third party software is needed and is
there a prescribed order of installation?
Solution
1. Third party software required
RTIFPGA requires Xilinx System Generator (XSG) and Xilinx ISE or Vivado for generation of VHDL
code and its synthesis. Since ISE 11 XSG is part of ISE/ Vivado installer. Within installation, please
select a version containing XSG. This typically is “System Edition”.
Usage of (free of charge) WebPack-Edition is only possible when working with DS5203 LX50 or
DS2655 hardware. In this case, please ensure that XSG is installed separately when using RTIFPGA
blockset.
XSG versions compatible with RTIFPGA depend on version of RCP&HIL/ RTIFPGA you use. Detailed
information regarding software compatibility can be found in “NewFeaturesAndMigration.pdf”. This
document is stored on dSPACE DVD within \Doc\Print – folder.
MATLAB compatibility is restricted when using RTIFPGA. For further information, please also refer to
“NewFeaturesAndMigration.pdf”.
When using a 32-bit MATLAB version, you need to use 32-bit versions of Xilinx tools. When using 64bit Windows and 32-bit MATLAB, please ensure that 32-bit installer of Xilinx ISE is used. You find the
32-bit installer xsetup.exe in <Xilinx_setup_directory>\bin\nt.
Please note that 32-bit version of Vivado can only be used with Windows 7 32-bit. The consequence is
that you need to use the 64-bit tool chain when working with Windows 7 x64 and Vivado.
2. How to install RTIFPGA
RTIFPGA blockset is part of dSPACE RCP&HIL software. The blockset is installed with dSPACE
setup. There is no sequence which has to be maintained when installing RCP&HIL and third party
tools needed.
Please note that you need RTIFPGA license (contained in license.dsp and keys.dsp files) within
installation process in case you want to view or edit FPGA designs. For downloading and working with
FPGA designs, you do not need RTIFPGA license. When installing RTIFPGA without RTIFPGA
license the FPGA Interface library will not be part of dSPACE RCP&HIL installation.

3. Example of how RTIFPGA can be installed
A common sequence of installation is as follows

Install MATLAB (32-bit or 64-bit)

Install Xilinx ISE / Vivado (32-bit or 64-bit, compatible with MATLAB version) containing XSG
o

Install dSPACE RCP&HIL (32-bit or 64-bit, compatible with MATLAB version)
o

Connect XSG to MATLAB within installation process
Activate MATLAB Version, which has been connected to XSG before within
installation
Start MATLAB and check if XSG and RTIFPGA have been connected correctly using the
commands xlVersion and rtifpgaver.
4. Working with RTIFPGA
When working with RTIFPGA, it is recommended to start MATLAB via shortcut generated by Xilinx
setup. This shortcut can be found within Windows’ Start-menu and is named “System Generator”.

Please check if the hardware platform you are using is compatible with Xilinx Vivado. Please
compare table at point 7). At the moment only dSPACE MicroLabBox can be used with Xilinx Vivado.

The 32-bit Version of Vivado runs only on 32-bit operating systems and not on 64-bit operating
systems.

8. Hardware recommendation
For building models containing RTIFPGA blocks, we recommend to use a computer which has a high
single-thread performance. We also recommend to use a computer, which is equipped with 8 to 16GB
RAM.
When using Xilinx Vivado or dSPACE platforms with Kintex 7 FPGA, we recommend to use a 64-bit
version of Windows, MATLAB, Xilinx and dSPACE software. We also recommend to use a computer
equipped with 16GB RAM in this case.
