2 brothers to
plead guilty in
terror plot
Court records show that two Pakistani-born brothers tentatively
plan to plead guilty in Florida in a
federal case accusing them of plotting a terrorist attack against New
York landmarks.
U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom
on Thursday scheduled a changeof-plea hearing next week for 32year-old Sheheryar Alam Qazi and
22-year-old Raees Alam Qazi. They
previously pleaded not guilty to several terrorism-related charges, including conspiracy to provide material support.
The brothers also are charged
with assaulting two U.S. marshals
while being escorted in the Miami
court complex.
The plot never got beyond planning stages. The FBI says Raees
Qazi traveled to the city in 2012 to
scout targets but did not attempt
any attacks.
Sheheryar Qazi’s attorney declined to comment. Raees Qazi’s
attorney did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Gun found at
Sunrise middle
school
Authorities say a South Florida
junior high student was caught carrying a gun and other items at school
last week.
Fort Lauderdale police report that
the 13-year-old boy was taken into
custody at Sunrise Middle School
on Friday and involuntarily committed for mental health evaluation.
Officials confronted the boy after another student was seen giving
him a knife in the school cafeteria.
A search of his bag revealed a .357
revolver, a knife, ammunition, a
mask and fireworks.
The school’s principal assured
parents during a meeting Monday
that students were safe.
Suspects busted
in FTL homeshowing killing
Authorities say they’ve arrested
a suspect accused of fatally shooting a man who was looking at a
house near Fort Lauderdale with his
wife and real estate agent.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office
reports that 51-year-old Vincent
Reniard Stanley was arrested
Wednesday and charged with firstdegree murder.
Officials say 51-year-old Kenol
Jean and his wife were visiting the
newly renovated home around 10
a.m. Feb. 26 when Stanley followed
them inside and shot Jean during a
botched robbery. Paramedics took
Jean to a nearby hospital, where he
died.
Surveillance video showed
Stanley arriving and leaving in white
Pontiac Grand Am. Detectives
tracked that car to 48-year-old Israel Brown, who was arrested Monday and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Brown then
led detectives to Stanley.
Brown was being held on $15,000
bail, and Stanley was being held
without bond.
Budget battle
may doom tax
cuts
Their session only days old, the
Florida House and Senate appeared
to already be on a collision course
Thursday over how to balance the
state budget.
Sen. Tom Lee, a Brandon Republican and the Senate budget
chief, warned Thursday that the
potential loss of more than $1 billion in federal aid for hospitals is
forcing the Florida Senate to reconsider big ticket spending items.
Lee acknowledged that Gov. Rick
Scott’s push for nearly $700 million
in tax cuts is in jeopardy as well as
his push to boost spending on public schools to record levels.
“We’re at a standstill right now
on every funding priority of state
government until we address health
care,” Lee said.
Lee said that the Senate would
likely move ahead in coming weeks
with a “mean and lean” budget that
would keep the funding of many
programs at their current levels with
no increases. He added that a “lack

Broward principal
A middle school principal in
Broward County is facing criminal
charges and he’s been removed from
his school.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s
Office, Steven J. Williams, principal
at Driftwood Middle School in Hollywood, was arrested in Dania Beach on
Sunday morning.
Based on an arrest report, deputies
responded to reports of a disturbance
at 300 Gulfstream Road around 3 in
the morning.
The report says deputies stopped
Williams’ car after the 911 caller
yelled, “stop that car he’s drunk and
his friend attacked one of my guys.”
Once out of the car, the report adds
that Williams “pulled his left hand out
of (his) pocket and an object fell from
the pocket to the ground.” The report
says, “(the) object was identified as a
clear plastic bag” and the substance
inside it “tested positive for cocaine.”
The arresting deputy wrote that
Williams failed a field sobriety test.

slurred his words and the odor of an

breath was more noticeable. I asked
the defendant if he had been drinking
and he stated ‘yes sir but not a real lot,
I was just helping my employee get
her husband home,’” the report reads.
The Broward County School District confirmed that they had “received
information” that Williams was arrested. School district officials said
Williams was removed from the school
and reassigned to a position away from
the school.
Attempts to reach Williams for comment failed.
Friend: Harper Lee was fine the day before
book sequel was announced
A longtime friend who visited “To
Kill a Mockingbird” author Harper
Lee the day before the world learned
she would release a sequel says she
was feisty but didn’t mention her new
book.
Historian Wayne Flynt, a friend of
the famous author, said he believes
Lee was capable of giving permission
for the previously unpublished manuscript to be released.
“This narrative of senility, exploitation of this helpless little old lady is
just hogwash. It’s just complete bunk,”
historian Wayne Flynt said in an interview.
Flynt visited with Lee on Monday
at the assisted-living facility where
she lives in her hometown of
Monroeville, Alabama. That was a day
before a division of HarperCollins
Publishers announced the publication
of “Go Set a Watchman.” The publisher said Tonja Carter, an attorney
who practiced with Lee’s sister, found
the manuscript, which will be released
in July as a sequel to the beloved
novel.
She did not mention the “Mockingbird” sequel that was about to make
international news during the visit.
Flynt said he believes Lee might
have planned to tell him about her new
novel, but didn’t get the chance because he monopolized the first part of
the conversation by showing her that
“To Kill A Mockingbird” was still on
the best-seller list more than 50 years
after its first publication.
She was “deeply touched” and surprised by that fact, he said. They then
talked about their families.
Flynt said Lee is capable of giving
consent, although he acknowledges
he doesn’t know what the consent
looked like. Lee is hard of hearing and
uses a magnifying machine to enlarge
print so she can read.
“I don’t know whether it was,
‘Nelle, you need to do this,’ or ‘Nelle,
what do you think?’ or ‘Nelle, sign
this because it’s going to be financially wonderful for you.’”
“No one is ever going to know —
no reporter, not me, what was said in
that room,” Flynt said. He added, however, that he had no reason to doubt
Carter’s integrity.

Police have apprehended a suspect they believe to be involved in the suspicious death of
retired University of Florida professor whose
bludgeoned body was found in his burning
house.
Gainesville Police spokesman Ben Tobias
said Friday that 37-year-old Stephen
Underwood Jr. was caught in Jacksonville late
Thursday.
Tobias says Underwood is likely to be
charged with murder, arson, burglary and grand
theft related to the death of 75-year-old Thomas Oakland.
Oakland was found dead in his burned
Gainesville home on Wednesday. An autopsy
determined he was likely already dead from
blunt force trauma to his body and head when
the fire started.
Oakland’s resume on the university’s website
shows he was a prominent professor of education, and president of the International Foundation for Children’s Education.

“She has a profound hearing problem.
You have to get right next to her right
ear and shout. You may have to shout
it three or four times.”
For example, he said, during a January visit, he saw that she was reading
a collection of works by C.S. Lewis
and asked her about him.
“Bluish, who’s bluish?” came the
reply. After, a couple of tries, Lee was
able to hear him. “Oh, C.S. Lewis, the
greatest Christian apologist of the
twentieth century,” she replied and
then rattled off the names of his books.
“‘The Screwtape Letters.’ I love
it,” Lee said of the satirical novel that
chronicles a veteran demon’s attempts
to tutor a protege in the art of tempting
humans. Flynt said he also once gave
her a tape of Monty Python actor John
Cleese narrating “The Screwtape Letters.”
“She roared,” Flynt said.
The news of the unexpected sequel
was met with excitement in
Monroeville.
Monroe County Probate Judge Greg
Norris said publication of “Go Set a
Watchman” helps solidify the county’s
reputation as the “Literary Capital of
Alabama.”
“I’ve talked to somebody who’s
read it; I can’t say who,” said Norris.
“But he or she said it’s unreal.”
Lee remains feisty despite her age
and medical ailments, Flynt said. He
said a statement Carter gave to the
publisher that quotes the author as
saying she is “happy as hell” about the
new book is “vintage Harper Lee.”
Flynt said he recently told Lee a
story about his 4-year-old granddaughter, also named Harper. He recalled
how he pointed to a large postal truck
being driven by a woman, and asked
the girl if she wanted to grow up to
become a mail lady. “I’m no lady. I’m
Harper Flynt,” he said the girl replied,
with narrowed eyes.
“She roared with laughter, and said,
‘You tell Harper that she’s just like
me. I’m no lady either,’” Flynt said.
Obama claims he learned of Clinton using
private email through news reports
President Obama claimss he first learned from news reports that his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, used
a private email account during her tenure, amid reports the
White House and State Department may have known as far
back as last August that Clinton did not use government
email.
“The same time everybody else learned it, through news
reports,” Obama said, in response to a question of when the
president learned of Clinton’s use of a private email account
for conducting government business.
Obama, in an interview aired Sunday, continued to stand
by his claims that “the policy of my administration is to
encourage transparency… and that’s why my emails — the
BlackBerry that I carry around — all those records are
available and archived and I’m glad that Hillary has instructed that those emails that had to do with official business
need to be disclosed.”
His comments came as Politico.com reported that Clinton’s
staff made the decision to keep the news of the emails quiet
after the White House, State Department and Clinton’s personal office learned in August that House Republicans had
been given information showing that Clinton used a private
email account to conduct official
government business.
During the interview, Obama
praised Clinton: “Let me just say
that Hillary Clinton is and has
been an outstanding public servant; she was a great secretary of
state for me.” The White House
struggled Friday to respond.
White House spokesman Josh
Earnest said Friday that a few
officials noticed Clinton wasn’t using a .gov email address.
However, he did not say when they noticed and if it raised any
red flags. Earnest also brought up the notion that he would not
be surprised if Obama learned about it from “newspapers.”
Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarret said Friday morning
she never received an email from Clinton’s private address
and did not know if Obama or any other official did either.
According to reports, the White House, State Department
and Clinton’s personal office knew in August that the former
secretary of state had used a private email to conduct official
business.
South Florida could become home
to two massive casinos, dog tracks
could end live greyhound racing and
slot machines could expand into other
parts of the state under a mammoth
gambling bill filed Monday.
The measure filed by Rep. Dana
Young, a Tampa Republican, would
upend the state’s multi-billion dollar
gambling industry if approved during
the 60-day legislative session that kicks
off this week.
Young ‘s measure does not directly
address the compact that allows the
Seminole Tribe of Florida to offer
blackjack and other games at its casinos, including at the Hard Rock casino
just outside of Tampa. That portion of
the state’s compact with the tribe expires later this year.
Instead, the 316-page bill focuses
on the rest of the state’s gambling landscape. Young, who had been tasked
with shepherding gambling legislation
this year by House Speaker Steve
Crisafulli, said she was trying to start a
“much-needed and well-timed conversation” about the future of gambling.
“I believe it is my responsibility to
present members with two competing
visions of gaming in Florida ... so they
can ultimately determine which approach they believe represents the best
public policy for our state,” Young
said.
Young pointed out provisions that
she argued would reduce the amount of
gambling in the state. She is also proposing a stand-alone constitutional
amendment that would prohibit gambling expansion in the future.
But groups with a long-standing
opposition to casinos blasted the measure and said it “defies logic” for
Florida to push ahead with the bill
even as casinos run into financial
trouble in other states like New Jersey.
“This bill would cause the biggest
expansion of gambling in Florida history,” said John Sowinski, president of
No Casinos. “It invites wall to wall
casino gambling in Florida, and the
social costs and crime that go with
it.”
Another complication for the bill
is that the Seminoles would likely be
allowed to offer the same type of
gambling at their casinos if the state
offers it elsewhere. But then the tribe
would not be required to share that
money with the state.
Recent efforts to win approval of
mega-casinos have gotten bogged
down the last few years in the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature.
Business groups and Disney have
staunchly opposed bills to approve
casinos, while the owners of the state’s
dog and horse tracks have opposed
bills that didn’t help their industry.
Gov. Rick Scott tried to win approval
of a new deal with the Seminole Tribe
last year but he ran into significant
opposition among legislators.
Sen. Bill Galvano, a Bradenton
Republican who has been deeply involved in gambling issues, said that
Young’s effort may be too far-reaching.
“The reality is that with these gaming bills when you try to do something for everyone you wind up doing
nothing for anyone,” Galvano said.
If approved Young’s bill would allow a total of two “destination resort”
casinos in Broward and Miami-Dade
counties. Those seeking to build the
new casinos would have to agree to
spend a minimum of $2 billion on the
resort. Voters in those counties would
also have to approve the casinos ahead
of time.
The measure (HB 1233) would also
allow slot machines to be added to
dog tracks in both Palm Beach and
Lee counties, while at the same time
allowing dog track owners to end live
greyhound racing without being
forced to surrender permits for other
types of gambling such as poker
rooms. The legislation would also
lower the tax rate paid by tracks located in Broward and Miami-Dade
counties that are already have slot
machines.
Obama's promises not
helping get black jobs
Rate remains double that of whites
On the eve of the commemoration
of the 50th anniversary of the civil
rights march in Selma, Alabama, the
unemployment rate among African
Americans remains more than twice
that of white Americans and nearly
twice the national average.
According to the latest jobs figures
released Friday by the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, the African American unemployment rate for the month of February was 10.4 percent, compared to the
white unemployment rate of 4.7 percent and national average of 5.5 percent.
The latest African American unemployment rate represents a slight uptick
over the January figure of 10.3 percent.
Whites experienced a slight decline
in unemployment from January’s rate
of 4.9 percent and the national average
also dipped from 5.7 percent.
While the White House boasted
about February’s job gains of 295,000
jobs and its 5.5 percent unemployment
rate Friday morning, it did acknowledge the “unacceptably high” unemployment rates among African American and Hispanic populations.
In a statement about the jobs data
Jason Furman, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, argued that
while the African American and Hispanic unemployment is nearly down to
pre-recession levels, it is still too high.
He pointed to proposals from President Obama as efforts to help.
“This is why the President has proposed a number of policies—including
the My Brother’s Keeper initiative for
young men of color and tax relief for
working families—to help reduce disparities in labor market outcomes,”
Furman said.

tors to push off any final decisions
until a special session in May.
But House Republican leaders so
far don’t share the bleak viewpoint
offered up by Senate leaders. They say
they plan to work on a budget that
assumes that the state will keep the
federal money that is now provided to
help pay for the care of the poor and
uninsured.
“It’s day three and we are continuing to work through the process,” said
House Speaker Steve Crisafulli.
Rep. Richard Corcoran, the House
budget chairman, said he expects
Florida to work out a new deal with
federal officials. He noted other states
have been able to keep their supplemental money for hospitals.
Florida lawmakers were anticipating a budget windfall of more than $1
billion this year due to the state’s
gradual recovery from the depths of
the Great Recession. Scott used the
projected windfall to make his push
for tax cuts and increased money for
schools as part of a nearly $77 billion
budget proposal.
The looming budget stalemate is
over a complicated $2 billion program
that matches state and local tax dollars
to draw down federal money for its
hospitals. Florida first received permission for the program back when
Jeb Bush was governor. But the fate of
the program has been in doubt ever
President Barack Obama passed his
health care overhaul.
Federal officials warned last year it
would not extend the program beyond
this year. Hospitals have tried to use
the loss of the money as a reason to
accept federal aid that would be made
available if the state expanded its
Medicaid program as allowed under
the health care overhaul.
But House Republicans have steadfastly rejected any talk of extending
Medicaid coverage to as many as 1
million Floridians. They have called
Medicaid an already broken system
and they have expressed skepticism
that the federal government would
follow through on its payment promises.
Senate President Andy Gardiner
opened up this year’s 60-day session
this week by saying that due to the loss
of the hospital money, the Senate
would consider an alternative form of
Medicaid expansion. The plan calls
for accepting Medicaid money and
then giving it to consumers so they
could purchase private insurance.
Legislators could try to use state
money to replace the lost federal dollars, but Scott said in a letter to President Obama that he would not agree to
that. Lee said that he would not want
to risk a possible budget veto from the
governor.

The city of Titusville hopes a bike
and hiking trail connecting it with
Florida’s Gulf Coast will provide a
big economic boost.
Tthe trail stretching from the state’s
Gulf Coast to its Atlantic Coast is
about 75 percent finished.
The 250-mile project is known as
the Coast to Coast connector and will
wind from St. Petersburg through the
middle of the state to the Canaveral
National Seashore.
Titusville leaders believe the trail
will bring tourists and businesses to
their area. Cities along the existing
trail route say it has provided an economic boost for their areas.
“This is really a project whose time
has come,” said Dale Allen, the executive director of the Florida Greenways
and Trails Foundation.
In downtown Dunedin, north of St.
Petersburg, private business occupancy rates increased from 30 percent
to nearly 100 percent thanks to the
Pinellas Trail, according to Dunedin’s
economic development office.
Work is expected to start soon on a
12.8-mile, $8 million section of the
trail in Brevard, north of Titusville.
The city also is expected to launch
work on a $3.6 million portion of the
trail that will run through downtown
with a bridge over Garden Street
“We look at it as an incredible economic opportunity,” Titusville Mayor
Jim Tulley said. “It will come right
through downtown. I think it will be a
real plus for Titusville.”
Undeveloped sections of the trial
in Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Sumter,
Lake, Orange and Brevard counties
need to be finished to complete the
coast-to-coast path. The largest gap in
the trail is between Sumter and Lake
counties that would join the West Orange Trail with one in Brooksville.
The state has already designating funding to link most of the gaps.
Money to complete the project, estimated at $50 million, will be allocated over the next five years.
“People are going to have to stop
and eat and come into our businesses,”
said Jeff Themert, co-owner of Downtown Gallery in Titusville, imagining
life after the trail is complete. “They
may be biking through but they are
going to have to stop.”
County Commissioner Robin Fisher
agreed.
“People will travel to do this. People
are going to stay and enjoy our community.”

Sales for Florida prepaid college
plans are at the highest point they’ve
been in several years thanks to a drastic cut in prices.
The Florida Prepaid College Board
says it has sold more than 50,000 plans
this year. That’s more than three time
the totals sales from last year.
The plans sold during this enrollment period were almost half the cost
of plans sold the previous year due to
a new state law that helps control
future fee increases at state universities in Florida.
The board also attributed the spike
in sales to a new plan that costs only
$43 a month.
The annual open enrollment period
began in October and ended Feb. 28.
Deputy fired,
accused of texting
suicide photos
A Tampa Bay area deputy has been
fired and arrested after officials say he
texted photos from a suicide investigation to his ex-girlfriend.
The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office
reported Friday that 29-year-old Austin Douglas is facing a charge of being
a custodian providing unauthorized
photograph or video or audio recording that depicts or records the killing
of a person. He is free on $5,000 bail.
An arrest report says Douglas obtained graphic photos from the scene
of a Feb. 19 suicide and then sent the
photos from his phone to his exgirlfriend’s phone, telling her how his
weekend was going. The woman then
reported the photos to authorities.
According to the report, Douglas
later told investigators that he sent the
photographs because he was having a
bad weekend.
Douglas had worked for the
sheriff’s office since 2006.
Lawmakers
criticize Obama’s
Cuba policy
Republican lawmakers blasted
President Barack Obama’s decision to
restore diplomatic relations with Cuba
on Thursday, saying it will only serve
to empower the communist nation
that’s been ruled by a dictatorship since
1959.
Republican members of the House
Local & Federal Affairs Committee
speaking before a nearly empty meeting room gave forceful speeches in
support of a three-page message expressing the will of the Legislature
they hope to send to Obama and congressional leaders. The 8-4 vote to
send the message was along party lines.
The message expresses “profound
disagreement” with the president’s
decision in December to restore relations with Cuba.
“The Cuban people have been under the crushing yoke of a brutal communist dictatorship since 1959, led
first by Fidel Castro and more recently by his brother Raul,” it reads.
“The actions of the Castro brothers
have resulted in the impoverishment
of the Cuban people and a complete
and blatant disregard for human rights
and democratic principles.”
Before the vote, Republican Rep.
Neil Combee of Auburndale said he
was born the same year Fidel and Raul
Castro’s revolution succeeded and told
committee members to look how he’s
aged.
“Fifty-five years is a long time. ...
For 55 years we have had essentially
one-man rule,” Combee said. “It’s
outrageous. It makes me sick. It breaks
my heart. As a lover of liberty and
freedom, I think about this all the
time.”
Republicans said the president’s
decision will only help the Castros
and won’t bring human rights to Cuba.
“If we do not stop the president or
let him know this is not the right path,
that dictatorship will grow and get
more powerful,” said Republican Rep.
Jimmie Smith of Inverness.
But Democratic Rep. Kristin Jacobs
of Coconut Creek expressed support
for the Castro regime and said that the
longstanding embargo has failed and
that U.S. policy needed to change.
“We can look back and see 56 years
of a policy that has not yielded the
results that we hoped that it would
have,” Jacobs said. “The president
acted rightly.”
The message still has to be ap-
proved by the House State Affairs
Committee before going to a full House
vote. The Senate has introduced a similar message.
Consumer
sentiment
continues upward
Floridians’ consumer sentiment
rose more than a point from last month
to 94.7 in February, the seventh straight
month of increase, according to a new
University of Florida survey.
“Economic optimism among Floridians continues to advance as many
of the fundamentals show improvement,” said Chris McCarty, director
of UF’s Survey Research Center in the
Bureau of Economic and Business
Research.
The main driver was positive views
of personal finances now compared
with a year ago, which rose 7.6 points
to 85.1, the highest level since June
2006 when the Florida housing market was at its peak. Among Floridians
under age 60, it jumped from 84.2 in
January to 92.5 this month, while those
age 60 or older ticked up only from
64.1 to 64.7. Overall expectations of
personal finances a year from now
declined slightly by 0.4 points to 101.6,
rising only among those with annual
incomes of $50,000 or more, from
105.6 to 111.0.
Perceptions that now is a good time
to buy big-ticket items, such as a car
or appliance, rose 2.2 points to 100.8.
Confidence in the U.S. economy
over the coming year fell 1.3 points to
94.4, while expectations of U.S. economic conditions over the next five
years fell 0.4 points to 91.4.
“The main concern is wage growth,
which has not risen in line with the
increase in employment. This is particularly a problem in Florida,”
McCarty said.
Florida’s unemployment rate was
5.6 percent in December, the most
recent state-level report.
Housing prices for existing singlefamily homes in Florida were up 7.4
percent over the previous year, to
$175,000. Housing gains vary considerably across the state: South Florida,
particularly Miami, is among the bright
spots.
Florida’s favorable economic recovery is reflected in a nearly $1 billion budget surplus heading into the
2015 legislative session.

Krysta Rodriguez inspires
young cancer patients
Turning 30 comes with its own set
of stressors— or excitement, depending on your perspective— but for actress Krysta Rodriguez, two months
into her third decade took a surprising
turn when she was diagnosed with
breast cancer.
Rodriguez, who had a featured role
in the TV show “Smash” and has been
in six Broadway musicals, including
the lead role in “First Date,” was in
her hometown in Southern California,
directing a musical at her old high
school when she found out the news in
September.
Having the creative outlet to work
while processing her diagnosis helped,
she said, and she chose to keep things
quiet for a few months.
“It didn’t seem to be real; it almost
felt like that’s the hypochondriac in
me, the dramatic actor that would
think, ‘oh, of course that would be the
thing that would happen,’” Rodriguez
said.
In mid-February, Rodriguez announced her diagnosis, simultaneously
launching her blog, ChemoCouture,
to candidly share her story as well as
fashion and beauty tips learned from
her breast cancer experience.
“I was very nervous to do it but it
feels nice to actually be able to talk to
people about it openly,” she said.
Rodriguez’s diagnosis— stage 2B
invasive ductal carcinoma in situ and
invasive with an estrogen receptorpositive tumor in her left breast—
indicates that the cancer began in the
milk ducts and has a risk of invading
other parts of the body. Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common
type of breast cancer, but is relatively
uncommon in women Rodriguez’s age,
Dr. Halle Moore, a staff physician in
the department of solid tumor oncology at Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute said. About 20 percent of
breast cancers occur in women under
age 50.
Moore, who has not treated
Rodriguez, said that while younger
women are less likely to have breast
cancer, specialists still see their share
of the diagnosis.
“I thought I was going to be this
chemo warrior.”
After initially going through a hormone treatment in the hopes that the
tumor would shrink, doctors determined Rodriguez needed to start chemotherapy. She relocated to her hometown in Orange County, Calif., after
living in New York City for 13 years,
and underwent her first treatment in
January. She’ll go through six rounds
total, one every three weeks, and assess her status with her doctors at that
point. According to Moore, while there
are a variety of different treatment
regimens, this is a standard used for
patients who haven’t had surgery yet
in order to monitor and evaluate how
a patient responds.
In the week after her first chemo
treatment, Rodriguez was surprised
by how serious the side effects of
nausea, bone pain and fatigue were.
For a couple days, she was unable to
walk after an allergic reaction.
“I really thought that I was going to
be this chemo warrior— the only person that had no side effects because
that’s what you imagine has to happen… maybe the only one not to lose
my hair… I was not,” she said.
Fortunately, after the first week of
a treatment she feels more normal and
is grateful, knowing that many others
going through it have far worse effects.
“The week of sickness is enough to
me to keep going, if it’s going to work.
I hope for that, but I won’t know for a
few weeks,” she said, adding that her
mid-treatment evaluation was due
soon.
Her diagnosis at such a young age
was even more surprising because she
has no family history and does not
have the BRCA1 and 2 genetic mutations, or tumor protein P53; doctors
told her she only had a 1 percent chance
of being diagnosed.
“I kept thinking, this is insane, I
must be the only person in the world,”
she said “Then as I heard about more
people, my doctor kept telling me it’s
much more common than I thought it
was, and now I can’t even believe the
amount of people who have the same
thing I have, or worse or different
kinds of cancer.”
Immediately after her diagnosis,
Rodriguez had her eggs harvested and
began hormone treatment. The roller
coaster ride of injecting estrogen in
order to prepare her eggs, then starting her initial treatment of hormone
therapy, which shut down her ovaries,
was rough, but doctors hope the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ method can preserve her
fertility for the future.
For patients with estrogen receptor-positive tumors, like Rodriguez,
using drugs to shut down the ovaries
and prevent estrogen production is a
good treatment, Moore said, as the
cancer cells may receive signals from
estrogen that promote their growth.
In fact, Moore published a study on
Wednesday that found that women with
hormone sensitive cancer had a reduced chance of ovarian failure with
use of the hormone-blocking drug
goserelin, which is similar to Lupron,
which Rodriguez is on. Moore noted
that her study participants had early
stage hormone-receptor-negative
breast cancer that did not require additional hormone treatment, as patients
with early stage hormone-receptorpositive cancer do.
Will a snarky app help you shed the pounds?
A new app is putting a snarky
spin on dieting for those who may
not take their weight loss
too seriously.
The app, called CARROT
Hunger, aims to shame users into losing weight with
a "tough love" approach,
which may not be for everyone.
Welcoming users with
"Greeting gluttonous humans," and "Oh, you're
back," while referring to
them as "meatbags," creator
Brian Mueller said he designed the CARROT character to be funny and judgmental to help people cut calories.
"She has this hilariously sarcastic personality that's based on my
mom, my sister and my wife,"
Mueller said of CARROT.
Similar to other calorie counting
apps, users enter their food log into
the app and it subtracts from the
person's daily calorie limit.
If users want to cheat and go over
their limit, they can pay the app via
an in-app purchase to get extra calo-
ries. But if they cheat and don't pay
up, there's a "public shaming" fea-
ture in the app that will tweet from
the user's account to let followers
know the person ate too much.
"I've gotten a lot of great feedback
from users who say it's a great deterrent to over eating," Mueller said.
However, the app does have some
dieticians worried that fat shaming
isn't a healthy way to watch weight,
and a study from University College
London found that those who experience discrimination or negative inter-
Multitasking hunger neurons
control other behaviors
In the absence of food, neurons that
normally control appetite initiate complex, repetitive behaviors seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),
and anorexia nervosa, according to a
new study by Yale School of Medicine
researchers.
Neural circuits are responsible for
flexible goal-oriented behaviors. The
Yale team investigated how a population of neurons in the hypothalamus
that control food intake are also involved in other behaviors. Known as
Agrp neurons, these cells also control
repetitive, stereotypic behaviors in
mice when food is not available, the
researchers discovered.
The team tested the behavior of
mice after the Agrp neurons were activated. They found that in the absence of food, mice engaged in repetitive behaviors, such as grooming and
marble burying. They further demonstrated that these behaviors were goaloriented and not related to anxiety.
“These observations unmask the
relevance of primitive brain regions
previously linked to eating to other
complex behaviors,” said lead author
Dr. Marcelo Dietrich, assistant professor of comparative medicine and
neurobiology and a member of the
Yale Program in Integrative Cell Signaling and Neurobiology of Metabolism at Yale School of Medicine.
“These findings are relevant to understanding diseases with both homeostatic and compulsive components and
highlight the multitasking nature of
neurons in the brain.”
According to Dietrich, the data sug-
gests that these primitive brain regions play a crucial role in psychiatric
conditions. “The research lays the
groundwork for possible clinical trials to address the behavioral aspects
of anorexia nervosa and other neuropsychiatric diseases with compulsive
behavioral components,” he said.
Bill would create
Florida health
insurance exchange
An alternative to Medicaid expansion is being proposed in the Senate in
a bill that would use federal funds to
offer health insurance to nearly 1 million low-income Floridians.
Thursday’s proposal from Sen.
Aaron Bean’s Health Policy Committee will still allow the state to take
billions of federal dollars, but would
give consumers vouchers to purchase
private insurance.
The Republican-led Legislature has
been opposed to Medicaid expansion
but has been more open to this option.
The bill would require the expanded
Medicaid population to pay monthly
premiums of no more than $25 and
modest fees for emergency room visits to encourage accountability.
There’s a 30-day grace period for
missed payments, but health advocates
are concerned because consumers
would be suspended from the program
after that and wouldn’t be allowed to
get insurance for six months.

Kate Paulson, a clinical dietitian at the Mercy Medical
Weight Loss and Nutrition Center in Des Moines, Iowa said
the CARROT Hunger app
wasn't something she'd recommend to her patients.

with, a lot of time you're your
biggest enemy," Paulson said,
adding that typically positive
encouragement yields the best
results.
But Paulson did say she
thinks it might work for people
who think it's funny and don't take it
seriously.
"Some people may get a kick out of
it and find it motivating as more of a
joke," Paulson said.
Mueller said users told him that the
app does work, although the style isn't
for everyone.
"I've gotten a number of users who
said they've lost anywhere from five
to twenty pounds," Mueller said.
The other CARROT apps include,
Fit, Alarm, and To-Do, and all use the
snarky CARROT character to motivate users.
New fat cells created quickly,
but losing them …
Once fat cells form, they might
shrink during weight loss, but they do
not disappear, a fact
that has derailed
many a diet. Yale researchers describe
how — and just how
quickly — those fat
cells are created in
the first place.
Young mice fed
an obesity-inducing
diet fail to produce
fat cells if they lack
a key pathway involved in the sensing of nutrients, the
study showed. In addition the new study also revealed that
fat cell production starts within a day
of starting a high-fat diet.
“In studying what happens before
these animals become obese, we found
that this fat-producing response oc-
curs unbelievably quickly,” said Matthew Rodeheffer, assistant professor
of comparative medicine and of molecular, cellular, and developmental
biology, and senior author of the paper.

New views of insights into
metabolism of cholesterol
With the aid of X-ray crystallography, researchers at the University of
Michigan have revealed the structures
of two closely related enzymes that
play essential roles in the body's ability to metabolize excess lipids, including cholesterol.
The findings are an important step
toward understanding and being able
to therapeutically target disorders and
drug side effects that cause lipids,
including cholesterol, to build up in
the body—leading to heart and kidney
failure and other problems.
Investigators in John Tesmer's lab
at the U-M Life Sciences Institute
obtained a high-resolution picture of
the atomic structure of lysosomal phospholipase A2, which is known as
LPLA2, and a lower-resolution image
of the structure of lecithin-cholesterol
acyltransferase, which is known as
LCAT.
The enzymes share many structural
similarities but perform different functions within the body.
Being able to see the structures for
the first time gives scientists a better
understanding of the role the two enzymes play in helping the body to
break down and remove cholesterol
and other lipids.
In healthy people, LCAT facilitates
the removal of cholesterol from the
body. But LCAT doesn't function properly in people with genetic disorders
that cause plaques to build up in the
blood vessels of the heart and kidneys,
or adipose tissue. Dieting can shrink
fat cells but not eliminate them, which
is why people can gain
weight back so quickly. The
Yale team found that the activation of a nutrient signaling pathway called PI3-kinase/AKT-2 was necessary
to produce fat precursor
cells, which in turn produce
adipose tissue. Normal mice
began producing these precursor cells within 24 hours
of starting a high-fat diet.
Rodeheffer stressed that
this pathway has other key
functions, such as glucose
regulation, and probably
cannot be safely targeted in people.
“However, it may be possible to
inhibit the generation of more fat cells
in obesity and increase our understanding how dietary changes drive increased fat mass,” he said.

Meanwhile, LPLA2 helps cells
break down excess lipids. Side effects
of certain drugs lead to inhibition of
LPLA2, which in turn leads to a
buildup of lipids within cells. Recent
studies suggest LPLA2 may also play
a role in lupus, a chronic autoimmune
disease.
"The structures reveal how the catalytic machinery of these enzymes is
organized and how they interact with
membranes and HDL particles," said
the study's first author, Alisa
Glukhova, who received a doctorate
from U-M's Program in Chemical Biology last fall and who is now working as a research fellow at Monash
University in Melbourne, Australia.
The high-resolution snapshot of
LPLA2 can also help illuminate the
impact of mutations within the enzyme.
"By knowing the architecture of
these key enzymes, we can further
understand how more than 55 known
mutations of LCAT lead to dysfunction and disease," said study senior
author John Tesmer, a research professor at the Life Sciences Institute,
where his laboratory is located, and a
professor of biological chemistry and
pharmacology in the U-M Medical
School. "These structures also suggest new approaches to develop better
biotherapeutics to treat LCAT deficiency."
The researchers are now working
on obtaining a higher resolution image of the LCAT structure to get a
more refined understanding of how it
functions.
Doctors fail to notice
chopstick stuck in boy's brain
A baby who got a chopstick stuck
up his nose which punctured his brain
and caused an infection was taken to
hospital 10 days later - because his
parents didn't notice.
A baby in China went 10 days with
a chopstick stuck up his nose, which
punctured his brain and caused an in-
fection because nobody noticed.
Hanhang, 1, was eating chow mein
with his parents in Chaoyang City
when he tripped and fell, sending the
object up his nose according to reports.
His parents removed the chopstick
and rushed him to the hospital for
further treatment where doctors failed
to notice additional pieces of the object penetrating his brain, according
to the report.
“When we got home after our first
visit to the hospital, my husband broke
all the chopsticks in half and threw
them away as we were worried something like this could happen again,”
Yu Liao, Hanhang’s 25-year-old mom
said.
Hanhang began vomiting and showing signs of drowsiness, prompting
his parents to bring him to the hospital
for a second time, Liao told reporters.
It was then that doctors noticed the
piece of chopstick in his brain.
“We were beside ourselves with
worry,” Liao said.
“After removing the remaining six
centimeters his condition improved
immediately, but he does have a brain
infection so will be staying in the
hospital for further treatment,” Dr. Li
Shaovi said.
Brain tumor patients fare better with private insurance
Brain tumor patients who are uninsured or use Medicaid stay hospitalized longer and develop more medical
complications than those with private
insurance, University of Florida Health
researchers have found.
The uninsured and Medicaid patients were also at greater risk of developing a new medical condition in
the hospital and 25 percent more likely
to die during their stay, according to a
recent study. Those same patients
ended up in a nursing home, rehabilitation center or hospice more frequently than people who had private
insurance.
People who are uninsured or use
Medicaid also are less likely to benefit
from early detection of brain tumors
because they have less access to health
care than those with private insurance, said Dr. Kristopher G. Hooten, a
resident in the UF College of
Medicine’s department of neurosurgery and the study’s lead author.
When brain tumor patients are hospitalized, much has already happened
that affects their medical prognosis,
Hooten said.
“When private-insurance patients
start to have a problem, it gets picked
up really fast. They go to a primary
doctor, who makes a quick referral to
a neurologist or neurosurgeon,” he
said.
People who use Medicaid don’t always have that benefit, sometimes
waiting and then going to an emergency room when their symptoms are
more severe. That ultimately affects a
patient’s outcome.
“It’s both an access-to-care and a
quality-of-care issue before patients
are admitted. (Uninsured or Medicaid
patients) come in when their brain
tumors are more advanced,” Hooten
said.
Once hospitalized, patients with private insurance and those on Medicaid
also fared differently, the study found.
The Medicaid patients were more
prone to certain kinds of infections,
postoperative respiratory issues and
problems with blood sugar control.
They also were more at risk for socalled “hospital-acquired conditions,”
including pressure ulcers and vascular
catheter infections. Medicaid and uninsured patients were almost twice as
likely to have blood sugar problems
compared with those with private insurance.
All of those factors contribute to
longer hospital stays, a higher death
rate and a greater likelihood that Medicaid recipients and the uninsured will
end up in a nursing home, rehabilitation center or hospice rather than going home, the study found. After adjusting for all of the hospital and patient factors, the outcomes and occurrence in hospital-acquired conditions
were similar. However, Medicaid and
uninsured patients still had an unexplained longer length of stay, which
may be a direct result of their insurance status.
Researchers hope their findings will
identify conditions like obesity and
poor nutrition that put them at greater
risk for other medical problems.

Investors: Less Certainty but Potential Opportunities
The world of today is vastly different from the one that existed in, say, 1974.
Innovations such as the Internet, smartphones, tablets, Facebook, Twitter and
so on have made our lives more enjoyable, efficient and productive in many
ways, and have vastly improved our access to the world’s knowledge. Yet when
it comes to one important area of our lives — investing for the future — many
of us may actually face more challenges today than we might have in the past.
At least two main factors are responsible for this apparent regression. First,
following a quarter century during which U.S. workers’ income rose fairly
steadily, “real” wages — that is, wages after inflation is considered — have
been flat or declining since about 1974, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics. Secondly, during this same time period, we’ve seen a large drop in
the percentage of private-sector workers covered under a “defined benefit” plan
— the traditional pension plan in which retired employees receive a specified
monthly benefit, with the amount determined by years of service, earnings
history and age.
So unlike your counterparts in the 1950s and 1960s, you may not be able to
count on a rise in real wages, and you may not have the promise of a regular
pension. What, then, can you do to improve your prospects for eventually
achieving a comfortable retirement?
First of all, in the absence of a formal pension, you will need to create your
own retirement plan. That means you will need to consider all the opportunities
available to you. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar account, such as
a 403(b), contribute as much as you can afford — at the very least, put in enough
to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And even if
you participate in your employer’s plan, you may also be eligible to open an
IRA. If you’re self-employed, you still have options such as a SEP IRA or a
“solo 401(k).” While these accounts may differ from each other in terms of
eligibility, income restrictions and contribution limits, they both offer the same
key benefit: the ability to defer taxes on your earnings for many years, typically
until retirement.
As for your next main challenge — the need to compensate for stagnant real
wages and the subsequent difficulty of boosting your savings — what can you
do? For one thing, you will need a reasonable percentage of your portfolio —
both inside and outside your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement plans — devoted
to growth-oriented investments. It’s true that the value of growth vehicles, such
as stocks and stock-based instruments, will always fluctuate. But you can help
control this risk by owning a mix of investments, including stocks, bonds,
Treasury bills, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other securities. Keep in mind,
though, that while diversification can reduce the impact of volatility on your
holdings, it can’t guarantee profit or always protect against loss.
As far as attaining rising wages and enjoying guaranteed retirement payments, we don’t have the “certainties” that many people had in the 1950s and
1960s. But you can still help brighten your future — through diligence,
discipline and the determination to explore the opportunities available to you.

Independent-minded baby boomers
face limited housing options
They are in deep denial about what

panelist says
As a culture, baby boomers aren't
happy about having to move into the
multi-bed, shared bathroom model of
assisted living or skilled nursing
homes. But
there are few
housing options that combine independent living
with the higher
level of care
and social services they require.
W h i l e
Americans are
living longer and remaining relatively
healthy, they are decidedly not interested in spending their golden years in
assisted living or skilled nursing
homes, a panel of experts unanimously
agreed at a recent UCLA Anderson
conference “Preparing for the Senior
Tsunami: The Future of Affordable
Housing and Long-Term Care.”
But with baby boomers already
making up 35 percent of the U.S. population and with 45 percent of them
already past 50, the question of how to
provide affordable housing for these
independent-minded baby boomers
spurred discussion among experts in
aging and housing at the event, presented by the UCLA Ziman Center for
Real Estate in partnership with Mercy
Housing, a national not-for-profit af-
fordable housing organization that
serves families, veterans, seniors and
people with special needs, including
the formerly homeless and developmentally disabled.
California has 1,100 skilled nursing facilities, more than anywhere else
in the nation. Most
are severely
outdated
and “designed for
task-centered care,”
said longterm care
consultant
and panelist
D a v i d
Farrell. Boomers culturally aren’t inclined to the multi-bed/shared bathroom model of most such facilities.
This is a demanding cohort, said
Fernando Torres-Gil, director of the
Center for Policy Research on Aging
and a professor at the UCLA Luskin
School of Public Affairs. But they are
in rather deep denial about what longevity really means — especially about
how to pay for a combination of independent living and the increasing medical care and social services they are
likely to need.
“Seventy-eight million ornery, demanding, entitled baby boomers are
going to wake up and say, ‘I’m in a
world of trouble,’” Torres-Gil said to
the amusement of the audience, which
included many 50-somethings.

Using multiple images that reached the Earth at
different times, astronomers including a UCLA professor have reported the first discovery of a distant
star exploding into a supernova. A supernova, the
end stage of life for very massive stars, can briefly
outshine an entire galaxy and radiate as much energy as our sun emits in its entire lifespan.
In pictures transmitted by NASA’s Hubble Space
Telescope, the astronomers spotted four images of a
supernova arranged in the shape of a cross, known
as an “Einstein’s Cross.” The shape was created by
the powerful gravity of a foreground galaxy embedded in a massive cluster of galaxies.
The galaxy cluster is so large that its gravity
bends and intensifies the light from the supernova,
which resides roughly 4 billion light-years behind
it, through an effect called gravitational lensing.
First predicted by Einstein, the effect is similar to
that of a glass lens bending light to distort the image
of an object behind it.
The finding will help astronomers refine their
estimates of the amount and distribution of dark
matter in the lensing galaxy and cluster. Although it
cannot be seen directly, dark matter is believed to
make up the majority of the universe’s mass.
Astronomers may have a rare chance to see the
supernova again within the next five years, according to computer models of the cluster that describe
the various paths the divided light is taking through
the maze of clumpy dark matter in the galactic
grouping.
The four supernova images captured by Hubble
appeared within a few days or weeks of one another.
That’s due in part to differences in the length of
the pathways the light follows to reach Earth —
each image takes a different route through the cluster before it heads toward our planet.
“The supernova’s different light paths are like
different routes through Los Angeles traffic,” said
Tommaso Treu, a professor of physics and astronomy
in the UCLA College, a co-author of the research
and principal investigator of the Grism Lens Amplified Survey from Space project, or GLASS, that is
analyzing the supernova. “One light path takes the
freeway, and others take surface roads. The freeway
itinerary is longer but the speed is higher.”
If the cluster were not present, astronomers would
detect only the supernova light that is directed
straight at Earth and would see only a single image
of the supernova.
Treu said that by studying the delays between the
times that the different images reach Earth, astronomers can glean clues about the type of warped-space
terrain the supernova’s light had to cover.
“With this discovery, we can learn something
new about dark matter. The brightness and delays of
future images could tell us something about the
clumpiness of dark matter,” he said, adding that
standard cosmological models predict that dark
matter is predicted to be clumpy. “But this is very
hard to measure directly because we cannot see it.
This is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of the
mysterious dark matter.”

Berkeley and a member of the GLASS collaboration, first discovered the four images of the exploding star in November 2014 in the images of a galaxy
cluster known as MACS J1149.6+2223, which is
located more than 5 billion light-years away.
The GLASS team and a second group of researchers known as the Frontier Fields team, led by
Steve Rodney of Johns Hopkins University, spent a
week analyzing the object’s light and confirmed it
was the signature of a supernova. They then turned
to the W. M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea,
Hawaii, to measure the distance to the supernova’s
host galaxy, which is 9.3 billion light-years from
Earth.
The astronomers nicknamed the supernova
Refsdal in honor of Norwegian astronomer Sjur
Refsdal, who, in 1964 first proposed using timedelayed images from a lensed supernova to study
the expansion of the universe.
“Astronomers have been looking to find one ever
since,” Treu said. “Now the long wait is over.”

Physicists at the University of
Michigan have demonstrated
"ponderomotive spectroscopy," an
advanced form of a technique that was
born in the 17th century when Isaac
Newton first showed that white light
sent through a prism breaks into a
rainbow.
Spectroscopy is essential to many
branches of science. The term broadly
refers to the use of light, often from
lasers, to observe, measure and manipulate matter. With it, scientists can
detect trace amounts of pollutants.
They can identify elements in the atmospheres of planets outside the solar
system. And they laid the groundwork
for computing and information processing. Those are just a few examples
of how it has been used.
The new high-resolution spectroscopy allows researchers to peer more
deeply into the structure of atoms and
direct their behavior at a much finer
scale. It could have applications in
quantum computing, which aims to
use particles such as atoms or electrons to perform information processing and memory tasks. Quantum computers could offer big boosts in computing power because they'd carry out
scores of calculations at once. Their
purported ability to factor numbers
much faster than their conventional
counterparts could bring improvements in computer security as well.
In addition, measurements that the
new spectroscopy makes possible
could lead to new understandings of
fundamental physics, said Kaitlin
Moore, a doctoral student in applied
physics in the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.
"The freedom of access our technique offers could be game-changing
for characterizing atoms and molecules, as well for all the physics that
stems from these kinds of measurements," Moore said.
The scientific term for "quantum
leap" is "atomic transition," and it
refers to a change in the quantum state
of an electron in an atom.
A change in quantum
state is an alteration in
either how much energy
or angular momentum
the electron holds. Angular momentum relates
to the shape of the
electron's path around
the atom's nucleus. Scientists delineate different shapes with a set of
letters you might think
of as notes on a piano.
Inducing one of these "forbidden"
changes would efficiently reveal typically hidden information about the
atom's structure. That's what
ponderomotive spectroscopy can do.
The technique lets scientists see and
spark a much wider array of electron
behaviors than ever before. The selection rules of conventional spectroscopy – the ones that insist atomic
transitions occur in order – don't apply.
"We can select which atoms we
want to talk to with spatial resolution
that is a thousand times better than the
conventional case," Moore said. "This
could be useful in quantum computing, which uses atoms that are bunched
together in a dense array, but that still
needs to address the atoms within that
array individually."
Florida man drove
dead body to
attorney's office:
Florida detectives are investigating the case of a man who drove to his
lawyer's office with a dead body in the
bed of his pickup truck, authorities
said on Thursday.
John Marshall, 52, said he shot his
neighbor in self-defense during a
scuffle involving a gun, his attorney,
Robert Harris, told the Fort Myers
News-Press and WINK-TV.
The lawyer reported the death of
65-year-old Theodore Hubbell, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s
Office, which said it had not made any
arrests.
The men were neighbors in
Bokeelia, a community of about 2,000
people on Pine Island in southwest
Florida, according to sheriff's spokesman Tony Schall.
Marshall was taken to the hospital
with facial wounds and possibly broken thumbs, according to the NewsPress.
Harris told the News-Press that
Marshall had called him days earlier
saying he feared for his safety. It was
not clear why the men were fighting,
but their dispute appeared to center
around a property concern.
How to succeed in
business without
sucking up
Many people seem to think that
landing a big-time appointment—like
a spot on a company's board—is all
about who you know.
But new research from Jim
Westphal, professor of strategy at the
University of Michigan's Ross School
of Business, shows that it's more about
how you think about and interact with
who you know.
One of the toughest hurdles to gaining influence with high-status colleagues is what's known as the
"ingratiator's dilemma." High-status
people are on alert for suck-ups and
insincere flattery.
Westphal's research with U-M doctoral student Guy Shani reveals that
people who take a strategic approach
to their encounters with colleagues
are more successful in landing roles
like corporate directorships, in part
because they don't come across as insincere.
"The problem of the ingratiator's
dilemma has been out there for a long
time, but there wasn't a good explanation for how people overcame it,"
Westphal said.
"It really makes it seem like the
successful ones are strategic.
They reflect on common characteristics, and they're less likely to dwell
on things they don't have in common
prior to interacting with high-status
colleagues."
Westphal and Shani surveyed corporate directors before and after social interactions, measuring how much
they thought about things they had in
common with colleagues, while avoiding thoughts about differences, before
and after meeting with them.
The people who were successful
getting board appointments and getting on influential committees like
compensation committees were more
likely to engage in this "self-regulated
social cognition" before meeting with
a high-status colleague.
That resulted in a spike of liking
and admiration for high-status colleagues just before meetings.
What's more, the high-status colleagues rated them high in likeability,
indicating they never felt the conversations were insincere.
It's one of the first studies to look at
change in social cognitions over time,
and how it affects perceptions of other
people before and after meetings.
"This helps explain successful social influence, and how some people
are able to get onto boards and the
most influential committees,"
Westphal said.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy
has surrendered at jail Monday for an
off-duty incident where police say he
shot another man in the leg.
Kevin McClernon, 51, surrendered
at the Broward Main Jail at 2 p.m. on
a felony charge of aggravated battery
with a firearm, and two misdemeanor
charges of using a firearm while under
the influence of alcoholic beverages
and culpable negligence, according to
the Sun Sentinel.
“I’m pleased this case went to the
grand jury, and I respect the grand
jury’s decision to file a true bill in this
matter. Clearly, McClernon was not
acting in a law enforcement capacity
when he fired his gun. His behavior
was criminal. While the majority of
law enforcement officers uphold their
oath of office with honor, there must
be consequences for those who break
the law,” Sheriff Scott Israel said in a
statement.
McClernon, on Friday, was suspended without pay, spokeswoman
Veda Coleman-Wright told the paper.
McClernon, according to the Sentinel, was off-duty but in uniform when
he shot a 54-year-old man in the leg
while visiting a friend in Hollywood
on a Sunday in January. When police
responded to a 9-1-1 call, they found
his friend’s boyfriend bleeding from a
gunshot wound. The man was taken to
the hospital. He reportedly told officers McClernon shot him. McClernon
claims the man came at him with a
knife.
The woman McClernon was visiting, the paper said, has more than 15
arrests, including a felony conviction
for battery on a law enforcement officer. Sheriff’s Office policy forbids
deputies to associate with convicted
felons.
The paper reports that the man
McClernon is accused of shooting has
multiple arrests and convictions and is
currently jailed for allegedly spitting
on a cop and kicking a patrol car window during an arrest for trespassing.
On Wednesday, a Broward County
grand jury handed up the indictment
on the three charges.

House is moving a bill that would
allow such a change.

would place limits on the number of
standardized tests that could be given
in public schools.
The Florida Senate is considering a
similar bill. But one major difference
is that the House bill would let school
start as early as Aug. 10. Currently
districts can only start school two
weeks before Labor Day.
State legislators put restrictions on
the start date after parents complained
about districts starting the school year
in early August. Some parents contended districts pushed up the date to
give students extra time before annual
standardized tests.
