South Bucks Way
A 23 mile walk from Coombe Hill near Wendover to the
Grand Union Canal at Denham
can be walked in either direction or in sections

Starting at the war memorial, take the path skirting round the hill, following the Ridgeway

waymarks.At Lodge Hill, turn left onto the main road.Walk down road for 140 metres and turn left
ontoa footpath signposted as the Ridgeway.
Walk southwards for 800 meters and at the junction of the footpath, take a left for 200 metres

then another left onto a bridleway, as signposted (ignore the permissive footpath).Walk down the
bridleway.
At the boundary of Little Hamden Common, leaving Icknield way, enter a footpath. Continue
?
down the woodland track and enter tarmac road.At the signpost, turn left into a footpath.
Continue walking on the footpath until the path meets Cobblershill Lane. Cross the lane and

continue south east wards down to Coneybank Wood. In the wood, take a left and continue down
the hill. Go under the railway tunnel and come onto Aylesbury Road at front of the Black Horse
Pub.
Walk through the pub car park and enter the footpath. Follow the footpath and walk out

skirts of the Great Missenden.At Link Road (A4128), cross the road and continue along the
path through the car park.Walk through the field down towards London Road and turn left.
Follow
the footpath parallel to London Road. Enter the school grounds follow the field edge

and go under the railway tunnel.Walk through the field to Little Kingshill and following the
footpath, the walk then through the village. At New Road, turn left onto main road for 140
metres and turn left onto Windsor Lane.
Walk down Windsor Lane for 1km and end of the village, turn right onto the footpath.Walk through field towards Little

Missenden.Turn left onto a bridleway, (Kingstreet Lane) then left onto the footpath.
When the footpath meets Penfold Lane, turn left and follow the road until the junction with Beamond End Lane.Walk on

in a northern footpath to the main road. Footpath joins main road again.Walk on road for 320 metres then veer left into a
field.
Follow the footpath towards the Lodges outside Amersham.Walk through the cricket field then walk north easterly on a

tarmac road for 60 metres before turning right towards A413. Cross A413 and walk down High
Street towards to Amersham Old Town
After crossing the roundabout with A355, turn left into a footpath past some houses. Walk

through the underpass of A413 and veer right to take the northerly footpath. Continue on the
footpath to Chalfont St. Giles, crossing two roads.
Walk behind some tennis court and across the field following the stream and cross the footbridge

at the corner of the allotments. Walk through the recreational ground south easterly direction to
a footbridge. After crossing the footbridge, the path meets main road. Turn left and at the
roundabout, turn left into the town centre. Follow the road left along the High Street and turn left
onto a footpath after passing the library on left.
Continue walking on Chiltern Hill, crossing A413 on the overbridge.At end of the road, turn right

onto a footpath and follow the path to Denham Road.At Denham Road, turn left and walk 300

metres and turn left onto a footpath.

The monument on Coombe Hill
commemorates Buckinghamshire soldiers who
died in the Second South African War of 18991902.The hill was given to the National Trust by
Lord Lee of Fareham who also gave Chequers to
the nation for the use of the Prime minister.
Many parish boundaries follow old estate
boundaries. Great and Little Hampden parish
was part of the Hampden family's estate from
Saxon times. In 1641 John Hampden, then MP for
Wendover, refused to pay an unpopular ship tax
on some of the land. In Civil War which followed
he was one of the leaders of the Parliamentary
Army until he died from wounds received in a
battle near Thame,
Mobwell Pond is the source of the Misbourne,
though this part of the river now only runs in
very wet weather.The Black Horse, opposite the
pond is a ballooning pub – during the summer
there are launches from the field beside it.
Before the railway was built in 1892, Great
Muissenden was an important staging post for
travellers – at
one time it had
12 coaching
inns.
Missenden
Abbey was
founded in 1133
and was an
important local landowern until the dissolution
of the monasteries in the 16th century, when it
became a private house. It was sold and rebuilt
several times, finally becoming an Adult
Education College.
The edible dormouse (Glis glis) was considered
a delicary by the Romans. A natice of southern
Europe, it resembles a small (6 inches long) grey
squirrel and can be found in
some Chiltern woodlands,
having been released into
Tring Park in 1902.
The Church of St. John the
Baptist at Little Missenden
has been in use for over a
thousand years and has well
preserved 13th century wall
paintings, including one of St
Chirstopher, patron saint of
travellers.

Shardeloes
was built in
1766 to
replace a
t u d o r
house .
When the
lake was
dug, as part of the landscaping of the grounds, the
remains of a Roman villa were discovered. The
lake is one of the few areas of open water in the
area and used by herons and wildfowl in winter.
There are many fine old buildings on the High
Street at Amersham including a 17th century
school, almshouses and the old market hall.
The Misbourne used to power many watermills.
None of the original medieval buildings have
survived (they were prone to both fire and rot)
but later houses stand on some sites, as at
Chalfont and Quarrendon Mills, while of others
only the Mill Lane remains.
Milton Cottage in Chalfont St Giles is now a
museum.The poet moved here in 1665 to escape
the plague, which was sweeping through London
and completed Paradise Lost before returning to
the city. The house was bought by public
subscription in 1877 to save it from being
dismantled and moved to America.
Savay Farm was build in the 14th century. More
recently it has been the home of Sir Oswald
Mosley. Much of its land has since been dug for
gravel.
The manor at Denham was given to Westminster
Abbey in 1065 and being only 20miles away,
supplied food to it. In the 1930s many film stars
stayed in the village while working at the nearby
studios. Protected by the Green Belt, Denham
remains a quiet and attractive village.
The Grand Union Canal was completed in 1805.
Barges carried goods along it from factories in
Birmingham to ships in the London docks.
Competition from
the railway removed
