CITY COUNCIL REPORT

At the meeting on March 3, Mayor
Sammy Hamilton welcomed special
guest John Gleske, a firefighter who was
called to the Pentagon on September 12,
2001, to put out the blaze in the roof of
the building after it had been deliberately
hit by an
airplane.
The Mayor
presented
him with a
Key to the
City
and
thanked all
our emergency workers for undertaking
sometimes-hazardous tasks.
The Mayor reported that Route 29
from the bridge to the Oyster House
does, indeed, belong to the City and not
the County as always assumed. He will
have the potholes fixed and stripes
painted. He also mentioned that he is
finding funds for a new waste water
plant.
Savannah Oglesby explained about
the school’s Aquaculture Program for
sustainable fisheries and invited
everyone to the "Aquafest" program to
be held on Saturday, March 28 (see
page 5 for more information).
Crime Prevention Officer Sue Gentry
presented the new bean bag game that is
used to keep kids busy. She explained
that local volunteers built it, including
the great gator picture created by Bobby
Campbell.
On behalf of CCSO, Lt. Mark
Milligan reported the theft of some
fishing gear and reminded us not to
leave it unsecured or outside.
The next City Council meeting will
be on Tuesday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. in
Everglades City Hall.

Message from the Superintendent
I want to thank everyone who participated in
last month’s Virtual Town Hall Meeting on
College and Career Readiness. We had a
phenomenal turnout! It was great to hear all of
the fabulous questions and answers. I hope
everyone left with some useful information and
resources. In case you missed the event, check

I want to congratulate our students who participated in the
annual Laws of Life Essay Contest. It was wonderful to hear the
winners present their powerful messages at the banquet. Also, I
want to give a shout out to Barron Collier High for their victory in
the High School Scholar Bowl. All of the high schools who
participated did a fantastic job. Finally, I am looking forward to
seeing even more student achievement events this month –
including the Collier County Spelling Bee.
Finally, a special congratulations is in order for our 2014-15
Champions For Learning Golden Apple recipients, which were
recently announced during surprise classroom visits. These five
teachers are representative of the outstanding instruction that is
going on in our classrooms each and every day. I look forward to
the 25th Golden Apple Celebration of Teachers Dinner in April!
We wish everyone a wonderful spring break and hope our
students and staff enjoy time with their family and friends.

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and

Spring is in the air and so is Spring
Break for our students and staff. Friday,
March 13, is an early release day and will
start Spring Break for students. Students
will not return until Tuesday, March 24. Report cards for the
3rd quarter will be distributed on Wednesday, April 1. We
wish everyone a restful and enjoyable break with lots of time
spent with family.
Here are a couple of events happening after Spring Break:
March 26 – SAC Meeting, 6 pm, Media Center
March 27 - Dr. Carper has the Philharmonic Orchestra coming
to our school to perform for our elementary students.
March 28 – Aquafest Event and Dinner (see below)
March 31 - We have the Blood Mobile returning to our
campus from 10:00 am - 1:30 pm.
In closing we want to congratulate two of our seniors who
have recently been accepted to major universities.
Houston Brown has been accepted to the University of
Miami and Savannah Oglesby has been accepted to the
University of Florida. We know both of these students will
enjoy successful college experiences!

Aquafest Program
The students of the Entrepreneurship Class of Everglades City
School are presenting the Everglades City School Aquafest on
Saturday, March 28. The Aquafest has two goals:
1) To develop the student’s innovative thinking, goal
setting, problem solving and leadership skills;
2) To raise funds for the Everglades City School Student
Activities Fund.
The Fest will include: Performances and presentations by
the students; an informative presentation on Aquaculture by
Bryan Fleuch, an industry expert from the University of
Florida; and a delicious fish dinner which is donated and
prepared by the local restaurants and will be served by the
students.
The tickets are: $10 for adults; $7 for children 12 and
under; and $40 for a family pack to include 2 adults and 4
children. Proceeds will benefit the school activities programs.
We are looking for sponsors to assist us in our efforts to
plan and execute this student-run festival. Sponsorship levels
include: Presenting Sponsor ($1,000), Gold Sponsor ($750),
Silver Sponsor ($500), Patron of the Festival ($250) and
Friend of the Festival ($100). Your support is crucial in
providing the support required to ensure the success of this
ambitious undertaking.

Recipe for Good Eating
Raising Cane
RUM CAKE

Ingredients: 1 c. chopped toasted pecans
1 box yellow cake mix
1 3.4 oz. pkg instant vanilla pudding mix
4 eggs
1/2 cup cold milk
1/2 c. vegetable oil
1/2 c. Bacardi dark rum
A friend of mine, Bem Storter, and his
wife Faye have some raccoons as pets.
He has lunch with us once in a while and
always asks for a doggie bag to take the
leftovers home to them. He said they can
smell the food the minute he pulls up in
the driveway and are all over his truck
looking for where he put them.
Sometimes he forgets and leaves it in the
toolbox on the back of his construction
truck and two of them had the lid raised
up and one inside handing it out to the
others.
He also has a green thumb and can
grow anything he plants. He has collards,
mustard and cabbage he likes to grow for
friends and the table. He had been after
me to get him some sugar cane to use to
BBQ with and try to grow. I had some
that had been in my family for over 60
years and just replant it every two years
so it won't get thin and hard to peel and
lose its sugar content.
I went to lunch with Bem last week
and he collected the leftovers picking
them up with his fingers and placing
them in the little Styrofoam box. I give
him the stick of sugarcane and it was real
fat and full of juice. He took it and was
going to plant the whole piece at one
time. The cane has eyes like a potato and
will sprout out.
Bem said he planted it and the next
morning he looked out and saw
something green sticking out of the
ground where he planted it. Upon
looking at it, the Raccoons had dug it up
and chewed on it because they could
smell the fish and hushpuppies on it.
I guess it don't pay to hold out on
your pets and be sure to wash your
hands. This time he fixed it so it couldn't
be dug up.

Glaze:
1/2 c. Butter, 1/4 c. water, 1 c. Sugar, 1/2 c. Bacardi rum
Preheat oven to 325°. Grease and flour a 12 c. Bundt pan. Sprinkle nuts on bottom of pan.
Combine all cake ingredients and beat in a mixer on high for 2 min. Pour into pan. Bake for
1 hour; cool in pan. Invert on plate and prick with fork. Drizzle glaze over top of cake. Use
brush or spoon to put extra dripping on top of cake.
Glaze: Melt butter in saucepan. Stir in water and sugar. Boil 5 min., stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in rum. Delicious!

Angels of the Swamp

Hopefully, you have noticed and been pleased with how clean our
community and roadways have been during the winter months. Well, two of
the people we should send out a thank you to -- are two
Swamp Angels from the VR Corp: John Oke of Ohio and
Roger Kerr of Wisconsin.
John, Mr. Perseverance, has been picking up trash around
town and up Highway 29 for years. Long before I knew who
he was, I very often noticed him and admired his persistence.
Even if people didn't know him personally, they knew him as
the man with the bicycle and bags picking up trash.
Roger, Mr. Consistency, is out collecting trash just about every day. He picks up beside
Highway 29, around town, the road to Plantation Island, the causeway to Chokoloskee
Island, and even empties the trash cans at the bridge. His collection of trash doesn't end
with winter. Back in his hometown when the snow melts away, he keeps a large cemetery
clean.
Let us wish these Swamp Angels safe travel home and back to Everglades City for
many, many more years. Also, let’s use their example as incentive to be more careful with
our trash, not throw anything down, and realize light items left in the back of pick-up
trucks will blow out.

BEAR CONSERVATION
AND MANAGEMENT
Approved in 2012, the Fish & Wildlife
Commission (FWC) developed a 10-year management plan that
guides the Bear Management Program. The goal of the plan is to
maintain sustainable bear populations in suitable habitats (areas
that have natural food sources and sufficient space). Bears were
hunted in Florida until 1994 when the season was closed to help
reduce mortality. The majority of states (32 of 41) that have
resident black bear populations allow hunting and use harvest as a
population management tool.
Most human-bear conflicts come from people inadvertently
providing food to bears. Bears have an excellent sense of smell, so
they can detect food from miles away. This includes pet foods,
outdoor grills, bird feeders, and importantly garbage which is the
biggest attractant for bears. This can be corrected by using bearresistant trash cans (some residents use ammonia in the garbage
cans when they move them out to the street to ward off the bears).
Despite best efforts, there have been times when bears injured
people (16 people in Florida since 1976 when formal records
started). Almost half of the cases involved someone intentionally
interacting with a bear, such as hand feeding. Another issue is that
the saw palmetto berries (the primarily source of food for the
bears) are being harvested for its “medicinal” benefits.
On Wednesday, April 15, at Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose
Center, FAMU, 1800 Wahnish Way, in Tallahassee (open to the
public), FWC will discuss the following:
A. New Rules for Limited Bear Hunting Season – Staff will
present a suite of proposed rules for approval to advertise as draft.
The proposed rules would establish a limited hunting season for
black bears on public and private lands. Rules would include
requirements related to permits, season, methods of take, bag
limits, check stations, harvest quotas and other changes. The
proposed rules would also revise specific area regulations on
Commission managed hunting areas.
B. Revisions to Bear Related Rules1.Bear Feeding Rule –
Staff will seek approval to advertise revisions to the Bear, Fox,
and Raccoon Feeding Rule 68A-4.001(3). Staff will also seek
Commission approval of a position statement on comprehensive
waste management practices.
2. Bear Conservation Rule – Staff will seek approval to
advertise revisions to the Florida Black Bear Conservation Rule
68A-4.009 (for more information, visit www.myfwc.com).

Wednesday he was spotted in Totch
Brown’s tamarind tree eating
tamarinds and talking to everyone
who passed by. After three days
trying to talk him down with no luck, I contacted the Everglades
City Fire Department. Two firemen came down; the one with bird
experience climbed the tree and scared him out onto the ground.
After the fireman located him, William climbed up on his
finger and is back home safe and sound. I am very grateful to the
firemen who took the time to rescue William. I would also like to
thank my friends and everyone on Chokoloskee who helped find
William.

Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus)

Height: n/a / Weight: 2.6 oz (75 g) / Life span: to 3
years / Reproduces: one liter a year / Found: All Counties, near coast,
mainland / Months found: JFmamJJASOND (lower case indicates
nesting and breeding season).
In Florida the eastern mole rarely
builds the characteristic molehill.
Instead, it prefers to make long
continuous tunnels just beneath the
surface of the earth. A single tunnel
was once measured to be more than 3,300 feet long! The eastern
mole is extremely good at digging in Florida’s dry, sandy soil,
which is the habitat it prefers. A healthy mole can dig a hole and
bury itself in five seconds. The chances of actually seeing an
eastern mole in Florida are extremely slim since it spends its
entire life underground.
Its underground life also makes it difficult to study. We do
know it is virtually blind, able only to distinguish dark from light
with what remains of its eyes. It is a prodigious insectivore and
can eat from 25% to 100% of its own body weight in a day. Its
diet consists of earthworms, slugs, snails, centipedes, larvae,
scarab beetle grubs, and ants. When an insect accidentally breaks
through into an open tunnel, the mole senses the intrusion and
scurries over to devour the intruder.
The mole we find in South Florida tends to be smaller and
darker than those found in the East and Midwest. It ranges all the
way into the very southern sections of Ontario. When the mole
comes into contact with any of Florida’s many golf courses, it is,
for obvious reasons, not very welcome. Most of these nuisance
moles are trapped or poisoned.
The mole has a single litter of two to seven pups per year,
which suffer from a high mortality rate. As many as two-thirds of
its offspring are unable to find suitable habitat in time to avoid
predation. The mole pups must leave their mother’s tunnel
territory and travel above ground in search of their own two- to
five-acre range. The young, defenseless moles are taken by
coyotes, foxes, snakes, and shrews. Take a good look at the photo
in this article because, in all likelihood, it’s the only mole you will
ever actually see.

WILDLIFE ON THE GOLF COURSE
One of the golf courses in Naples, surrounded by woods, is full of
squirrels, several varieties. When he is out
on the sand holes, one grounds keeper
often finds this particular squirrel jumping
up on his cart. It's NOT legal to have
squirrels for pet, but this squirrelly friend
seems to wait for him to come on the
course to get something to eat. Even on the
cold days in the 40's at 6:30 am, he looks
for him. Apparently, many golfers are
approached daily by these red squirrels.

I will try to give as accurate a description
as I can about my great-great-great
grandfather but his early life is somewhat
sketchy. R.E. Hamilton was born in the
mid to late 1840s into slavery as was his
mother, a Choctaw/Chickasaw, owned by
one William Phillip Edwards in south
Georgia. R.E.’s father is only described as
a ‘mulotto’ slave, with straight black hair.
The Edwards moved to central Florida
before the War of Northern aggression,
early 1850s. After the war R.E. was freed
but stayed in the area and married a
woman named Elizabeth Hanna Moore.
They had at least two sons, Thomas and
George; but because he didn’t like what he
saw happening with the ‘reconstruction’ of
Florida and how non-whites were being
treated (Indian and Black alike), he wanted
to get away. Unfortunately, Hanna wanted
to stay. Not sure what led him to
southwest Florida and the 10,000 islands,
whether it was his supposed family ties to
Chekaika (whose band/tribe was hiding
out there) or just the remoteness of the
area that drew him there. Whatever the
reason, he went there and soon blended in
with the islands and its people. It is said
that R.E. was the first person William
Allen met, when he came to what would
become Everglades City. At the time, it
was just high-ground along the Allen (now
Barron) River. R.E. apparently lived well
there and grew close to the remnants of the
Chekaikas tribe. He was well aware of the
plight of the Natives and he'd seen firsthand what happens to non-Whites, by
Whites. He knew his survival depended on
his adapting and adjusting to the Whiteman’s ways so he helped passers-by and
newly arriving pioneers with finding fresh
food and water. R.E. was often described
as a friendly Indian who stayed to himself.
That was until he met Mary Appolonia
Weeks, daughter of newly arrived pioneer
John Weeks. R.E. and John got along fine
until John found out that R.E. and Mary
had something goin’ on. R.E. was in his
30s' and Mary was a teenager. He quit his
association with R.E. and forbade Mary
from seeing R.E.

adventure stories, lots of educational information and more than
200 photos and illustrations. When my grandchildren come to
town, I’m always looking for somewhere fun to take them around
this area. This book has it all (even grown-ups learn facts about
wildlife and more).
Karen is an award-winning travel journalist and knows our area well having wintered
in Chokoloskee. Being a professional photographer, she took most of the pictures herself
but also included contributions from local photographers, including Bruce Hitchcock.
There’s plenty in this soft-covered book for every age group, from toddler to teen. It
includes maps, a calendar of kid-friendly festivals and events, and a comprehensive

coverage or to claim an exemption.
If you and your dependents all had

this on your 2014 tax return by simply
checking a box on Form 1040, 1040A or
1040EZ; no further action is required.
If you obtained a coverage
exemption from the Marketplace or you
qualify for an exemption that you can
claim on your return, you will file Form
8965 with your tax return.
For any month you or your
dependents did not have coverage or a
coverage exemption, you will have to
make a shared responsibility payment.

Panther Deaths
Two
recent
vehicle
collisions with panthers
have been reported: A 1½ yr-old male panther was killed on March
7 on I-75 near Mile Marker 123 in Lee
County and a 2½- yr-old uncollared male
Florida panther was found on March 8
on CR951, 300 m north of Port au Prince
Road in Collier County. The latest is the
10th Florida panther mortality and the 8th
road mortality for 2015. Please be
careful when driving in Florida and
adhere to speed limit signs, especially
around wildlife habitat areas. To learn

From Savannah’s Eyes
I have some very exciting news to share; if you didn’t already know or
hear; I have officially been accepted to the University of Florida! I am
overly excited for this opportunity since UF is and always has been my
dream college. I remember being in elementary school and telling all my
friends that I want to go there, and my dream is actually coming true!
I found out online before I got the official acceptance letter in the
mail. I was at practice the day of February 13 when I got an email saying
to check my Gator Link account at 6:00 p.m. When I got home it was 5:30 and I waited
with my laptop on my lap for 30 minutes; I was too anxious. Then before I knew it, I
checked the clock and it was 6:03 p.m. I quickly logged into my Gator Link account and a
white screen popped up. I read out loud in front of my parents “Congratulations, Savannah
Oglesby, you’ve been accepted…” I didn’t even get to read anything else because my
mother started screaming and jumping up and down. It didn’t really hit me until about 10
minutes after that was when I started getting really excited! I called all of my family and
told them, and they all told me how proud they were.
I will start in the middle of the summer until early August, so that I can get used to the
campus. I will finish my AA, since I almost have it completed from taking classes at
Florida Southwestern State College. I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my life!

Welcome, Linda & Glenn Cathey
Glenn Cathey is the new Pastor of the Everglades First Baptist
Church on School Drive across from Everglades City School.
Glenn and his wife Linda moved here a month ago from
Jacksonville. Glenn served as a bivocational pastor who taught
History/Social Studies and pastored churches from 1989 until he
retired from teaching in 2011. Linda is a retired High School
Math teacher; now she enjoys playing the piano during Sunday
services. Their love of teaching was passed on to their two daughters: Rebecca is a 5th
grade teacher in Maccleny in North Florida and Deborah is planning to live here in
Everglades City and is also a Math teacher. Linda and Glenn have four grandchildren.
The Cathey’s say they feel very connected to this community since both came from
“crabbing” river families on the Florida-Georgia border. They may have “changed their
locale but not the culture.” Everglades City welcomes Linda and Glenn and hopes they will
feel at home here in South Florida.
The First Baptist Church is located at 416 E School Drive, directly
across the street from Everglades City School. Services include
Sunday School (adult and children) at 9:45 a.m., Sunday Service at
11:00 a.m., Sunday Night Bible Study at 6:00 p.m., and Wednesday
night at 7:00 p.m. Gospel Music and Movies are also presented.

OBITUARY
Jared Stokes, beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away on
February 3. Jared was born in Naples on June 17, 1991. He was a
loving, compassionate young man. He had many dreams and goals for
the future. He touched so many people with his smile and his big
hugs. He traveled the world and made wonderful memories. He loved
to fish. He loved sports, especially basketball. He was a Dolphins and
Heat fan. His family states “Jared, you will always be in our hearts,
and a piece of us has gone with you.”
Jared is survived by his mother, Susan Aponte (Steve); father, Michael Stokes; sisters,
Tara and Mari; brothers, Shawn, Michael, Paul, and Blaine; grandmothers, Laverne Stokes
and Blanca Mendez; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A celebration of Jared's
life was held on February 7 at Naples Funeral Home with burial at Palm Royale Cemetery.
