Re:
Meeting Schedule and Agendas
1. Next week’s meeting schedule and agendas are attached.
2. As you may have noticed in a recent “Did you know…,” the local Vietnam Veterans
Association, Chapter 925, has been recognized as an official national partner in
commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. VVA 925 is part of the larger
Military Appreciation Days effort during the month of May, including the Ocean Boulevard
parade and Family Picnic on Saturday, May 16. Plans also include a dinner-dance,
educational exhibits and a golf tournament. Similarly, Rolling Thunder, South Carolina
Chapter 3, is organizing a “welcome home” event on Saturday, May 2, for our military men
and women who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan. This, too, is part of Military
Appreciation Days. For more information about the Vietnam anniversary events, please
contact VVA 925’s Gary McCormick at 843-504-5701 or Ron Thornton at 843-750-0420.
For more information about the Iraq and Afghanistan “welcome home” event, please contact
Rolling Thunder’s Bill DeVaughn at 843-685-1793. See www.militaryappreciationdays.com
for additional details, including registration forms for the parade and dinner-dance.
3. US Army veteran J.R. Martinez is the grand marshal for this year’s parade and picnic
during Military Appreciation Days. In 2003, Martinez was severely wounded during a
tour of duty in Iraq. His recovery took 34 months, and today he is a successful actor, author,
motivational speaker and winner of Dancing with the Stars. See the attached news release,
below, for additional information about Martinez and Military Appreciation Days.
4. Volunteers are invited to join The Big Sweep on Ocean Boulevard and the boardwalk,
beginning at 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 18. The idea is that some “spring cleaning” in
the Downtown Redevelopment Corporation district will make a good first impression on our
millions of visitors. Teams of volunteers, along with the Oceanfront Merchants Association,
downtown businesses, DRC staff and city crews, will pick up litter, spruce up landscaping,
clean windows, paint and otherwise polish the area’s appearance. Trash bags will be
provided, and the city will have bulk waste containers available downtown throughout the
week for larger items from residents and businesses in the area. Want to volunteer? Sign up
and learn more at www.thebigsweepmyrtlebeach.com.
5. Calling all kids, ages six to 12, for a free Track and Field Day at Doug Shaw Memorial
Stadium on Thursday, March 19. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m., with events starting at
5:30. Members of the men’s and women’s track team from Coastal Carolina University will
greet and assist the youngsters as they run, jump and throw. For more information, visit
www.mbtrackandfield.com.
6. City Council has one vacancy to fill on the Election Commission. To be considered for
this or any other appointment to a city board, commission or committee, submit your résumé
and/or a letter of interest to the City Clerk, 937 Broadway Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
7. Public input is needed as the city prepares the five-year update to its Floodplain
Management and Hazard Mitigation Plan. The plan serves as a guide to floodplain
management, as well as a guide for reconstruction and redevelopment of flood-prone areas,
to reduce or eliminate future flood damage. Everyone is invited to participate in a survey
about hazards and disasters at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2024375/City-of-MyrtleBeach-Public-Participation-Survey. The survey also is available on the city’s website.
8. Monday’s opening of the Coventry Boulevard extension is the subject of our Photos of
the Week. The new four-lane road completes the connection between Farrow Parkway and
US 17. The private developer of the surrounding land built the new road for approximately
$4 million and then deeded the right-of-way to the city two weeks ago. A new traffic signal
has been installed where Coventry Boulevard intersects US 17. For photos along the new
stretch of roadway, see http://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/pow.html.
9. Did you know… That about 200 copies of A Pictorial History of Myrtle Beach are still
available, while they last, for just $25 apiece? The hardbound book features photos from the
early 1900s to present day. The 144-page collection was published in 2013 by the Myrtle
Beach Herald as part of the city’s 75th anniversary celebration. By the way, the City of
Myrtle Beach just turned 77 yesterday (Thursday, March 12, 2015). To purchase a copy of
the history book, call the Herald at 843-626-3131.

Re:
Memorial Day Weekend Parade Grand Marshal
J.R. Martinez named Grand Marshal
of 2015 Military Appreciation Days Parade
US Army veteran J.R. Martinez will serve as the Grand
Marshal of this year’s Military Appreciation Days Parade on
Ocean Boulevard. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m., Saturday,
May 16, and is a highlight of Military Appreciation Days each
May. The month-long celebration is a “thank you” to our
dedicated service men and women, past and present – along with
their families – for all that they do on our behalf.
As Grand Marshal, J.R. Martinez will lead the parade and
greet fans afterward at the Military Appreciation Days Family
Picnic. Everyone’s invited to enjoy the festivities, which include
military exhibits and live music from the Andrew Thielen Big
Band. The picnic lunch, prepared by the Omar Chefs Shriners,
is free for active-duty military, veterans and their families,
including National Guard and Reserve.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, with a number of activities
and events planned for Vietnam-era veterans. The local Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter
925 is co-sponsoring a visit from the Agent Orange Quilt of Tears and a small-scale version of
the Vietnam Memorial Wall, May 14-16. These are part of the exhibits and displays available on
Ocean Boulevard during the Family Picnic. Live music during the picnic will be provided by the
Andrew Thielen Big Band. Other Vietnam veteran events during the month include a dinnerdance and golf tournament.

The Military Appreciation Days Committee is excited to have J.R. Martinez as Grand
Marshal. “We tried to get J.R. a few years ago, but he had a previous commitment elsewhere
then, so this is a welcome announcement,” said Mark Kruea, Myrtle Beach’s Public Information
Officer.
Martinez was severely wounded during a tour of duty in Iraq in 2003, and his recovery took
34 months. Best known in recent years as the winner of Dancing with the Stars, J.R. Martinez
also is an actor, author and motivational speaker. He’ll greet fans in person at the Family Picnic,
following the parade.
“We’re thrilled that J.R. is available this year, and he’s thrilled to be the Grand Marshal.
Committee members look for a celebrity with a military background, and Mr. Martinez is the
perfect choice,” Kruea added.
Entries are being accepted now for the Memorial Day Weekend Parade. Interested groups
and businesses will find materials on-line at www.militaryappreciationdays.com. Myrtle Beach
area attractions, accommodations and restaurants also offer military and veteran discounts during
the month of May. Here’s a quick list of events scheduled for this coming May.
