On your behalf I would like to welcome three new members of staff. Ms May Sem Wong has now been with us for a week in 1-21 following Ms Lyndal Archibald’s move interstate. On Monday, after bidding Mrs Stephanie Serollo a teary farewell, Ms Melissa Low joined 2-25 for her first day at PPPS. This week we also welcomed Mrs Helen Knower who is replacing Mrs Binh Hoang, a member of our Education Support Team who is expecting her third child in August. I know that you will join us in making them feel welcome to our community. We wish Mrs Jenny Hornidge a wonderful holiday as she visits her son and his family overseas. Jenny's last day is next Wednesday, 30 th July and she will return to PPPS on Monday 20 October in term 4. This time last week I pulled back the curtains, after sleeping in, to be greeted by glorious sunshine and a beautiful vista of sea and sand. The view from my office window this morning is, I must admit, less glorious as I try and make out the shapes moving around in the fog. I had a lovely time away in Queensland however I also really enjoyed seeing all the smiling faces when I returned on Monday. We hope that you can join us on Friday for Planet Art National Tree Day when each class will plant a tree from 2 pm onwards. Special thanks to Mr Rob Peel who dug our 32 holes on Tuesday. We are very excited to have the support of Toyota South Morang and Toyota Preston who have donated the 32 good sized trees for the planting; this is a terrific contribution to our school grounds. You may remember that we have enjoyed a partnership with Toyota South Morang with their sponsorship of $2000 for our Maths Garden several years ago; it is lovely to work with them again. I must admit that I had to smile when I read these tips from Michael Grose. Any parent who has listened to me say ‘a few words of wisdom’ at Presentation will know why. “Children don’t need their mother and father to be their friends. They need them to be their parents. Parents make the hard choices whereas friends will take the easy way out. Parents want to be loved and respected whereas friends want to be popular and liked. Parents help kids to be safe, whereas friends want to have fun. Both are important for family functioning, but it’s only adults who feel confident enough to step ito their parenting role that can provide the safety kids need. Here are five ways to make sure you’re a parent and not a peerent: 1. Use an authoritative approach that mixes firmness with warmth and be willing to take children’s ideas on board. 2. Identify important rituals that bring your family together. 3. Conduct regular family meetings to give children a voice in their family. 4. Get help when you are not coping or feeling overwhelmed. 5. Learn ways to bind your family together so they think ‘we’, not ‘me.’ Lead your family wisely.” I will try to follow Michael’s words of wisdom too as I attempt to lead the “PPPS family” wisely. The aim of TOM is to enhance the potential of our students by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment. As a part of the program, teams of seven students work together to solve two problems, one a long term and one a spontaneous problem. There are four Long Term Challenge disciplines: Applied Technology Language Literature Maths Engineering Social Sciences Teams have six weeks to formulate a solution to their one chosen challenge and ten minutes to present their solution to an audience and panel of judges on Tournament Day. The Spontaneous Challenge will be revealed on the day of the Tournament. Plenty Parklands Primary School is entering one team in Tournament of Minds. Our team will be involved in a presentation on Saturday 16th or Sunday 17th of August at La Trobe University, Bundoora. The State Final will be held on Sunday 14th September at La Trobe University, Bundoora. We wish them the best of luck with their challenge. TOM Coordinators Kristy Caruso, Rose Di Cecco, Lauren Heath, Kristy Harvey SIGN ME IN APP We are one step closer to a paperless age….. You will be aware that we have a sign in/out book for visitors, children leaving the school early due to illness etc. which has now been extended to include trained volunteers. This system ensures we have a record of all visitors on site and has now been upgraded to an electronic format. Please be sure to sign in whenever you are here helping at the school or collecting your child unexpectedly ie. illness. You don’t need to sign in if you are attending assembly, year level activities or sporting events. Our friendly office staff are here to help if you need any assistance. 2014 Parent Opinion Survey Each year the school conducts an opinion survey of 15 per cent of the school community. Parents are randomly selected to participate and we use the information to support future school planning and improvement. If your family has been selected, the survey will be sent home to you on Monday 28 th July and is to be returned by Friday 1st August. The survey is designed to take no more than 20 minutes to complete and your feedback and opinions play an important role in making our school the best it can possibly be. Please be assured that your responses are completely confidential. The survey is conducted anonymously and it is important to us that you complete the survey as honestly as possible. The results will be shared with parents via the School Council later in the year. Plenty Parklands Press Date: July 24, 2014 Issue 20 MUSIC NOTES about SALAKA. On Thursday last week, about 600 students at PPPS, were transported into the sounds and culture of Ghana. Having 120 children play drums simultaneously was an amazing sight and sound! The teachers had to have a go too, which they loved. Tuza Afutu and Naa Ayikai taught, entertained and involved everybody, Salaka means ‘sharing’, so they lived up to their name, sharing their skills and West African music and knowledge with us. Many students have been asking about the ‘African play station’ (‘aslatua’ is the Ghanan name), that was introduced by Tuza. I can put in an order for these if anyone is interested. They cost $20 a pair. Please write a note with your child’s name, home group and your order (with the correct money), if you wish to purchase these. I hope to put in an order on Friday 1 st August. If you would prefer to investigate prices and other instruments yourself, the website is www.africanbeat.com.au It has been wonderful to see the students’ enthusiasm for learning with our international visitors. Anne McKay (Music Coordinator) SCHOOL NURSING PROGRAM Today we have sent home information about the School Nursing Program to all Prep families. This program offers prep families with children in primary schools the opportunity to consult with a school nurse. It provides parents/guardians, teachers and nurses with the opportunity to work together for the wellbeing and educational progress of Plenty Parklands Primary School children. A referral and follow-up service is provided to children in other year levels. If you would like to access this service, please contact your child’s teacher or myself. We require all prep families to complete the health questionnaire and return it to your child’s class teacher in the envelope provided by Thursday 31st July. This information is very confidential. The school nurse will visit prep students in term 3. The school nurse assessments will begin on Monday 18th August. Plenty Parklands Press Date: July 24, 2014 Issue 20 YEARS 5/6 SPORT PROGRAM 2014 DISTRICT GRAND FINAL results Friday JULY 18TH Congratulations to our soccer team for winning the grand final last Friday against St Francis of Assisi Soccer: PPPS Bushrangers 2 goals to Falcons 0 goals. WHITTLESEA DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP On Monday July 21st the Divisional Soccer Finals were held at RMIT (synthetic pitch), McKimmies Road. We had our girls team play off against Marymede Catholic College in the grand final. The game was played in great spirit and it was our girls first official game as our Bundoora District does not have a girls competition. Our girls worked extremely hard and were only beaten on penalties 4-1. The boys squad had to play off in a semi final to qualify for a spot in the grand final. Their first game was against Broadford P.S. It was quite a one sided affair and our team won comfortably 13-0. This set up a grand final between Marymede College and Plenty Parklands. It was a physical and hard game in the beginning until the Bushranger team found space and played their own style of soccer. The final score was 3 to 2 goals with the Bushrangers coming out victors. Congratulations to our girl’s and boy’s teams who represented PPPS so proudly and demonstrated the school values at all times. A huge thank you to all of the parents who came and supported our school. A special mention to Mrs Anamourlis (parent helper) and Mrs DeAngelis (supplying oranges) on the day. The Bushrangers will now move onto the Northern Metropolitan Regional Finals which will be held at the Banyule City Soccer Club, Somerset Drive, Heidelberg on Monday 18th of August. GYMNASTICS IN YEARS 3-4 The PPPS gym program will run on the following Friday’s: July 25, Aug 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 and September 12. It will be held at PIT Gymnastics and the following classes are timetabled: 9:30 - 10:30 3-17 and 3-20 10:30 - 11:30 3-18 and 3-19 11:30 - 12:30 4-29 and 4-30 12:30 - 1:30 4-31 and 4-32 Parents are most welcome to come along but must be seated behind the glassed area and are not permitted to enter the gym teaching space. BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT (Year 5-6) Friday August 8 All parents and friends are invited to come along and support PPPS students from 9.30am-2.30pm at the Mill Park Basketball Stadium located next to the Stables shopping centre, Childs Road. If you are able to assist as a coach or scorer please contact Mr Scanu as soon as possible. A reminder to all students that when attending sports lessons appropriate footwear and clothing is required. It is vital that your child wears comfortable running shoes so that they are not being disadvantaged in working to their full potential. This also decreases the amount of injuries when running or involved in dodging games. Also the preferred clothing for girls is to wear a skort (available from school uniform shop). Shorts are also an option. A school dress at times makes it awkward and uncomfortable for the child to move freely and limits their involvement in particular class activities. Please consider this when your child is getting dressed in the morning, particularly on P.E. days. If unsure please ask your child the days they have PE sport lessons. BDSSA ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2014 This is being held on Wednesday August 27th at Meadowglen Athletics Stadium on McDonald’s Road in Epping (next to Skate Park). All parents and friends are welcome. Students involved over the coming weeks will receive a permission form to attend. FUTURE SPORTING STARS Hannah (3-20) and Jordan (3-17) have been selected in the Victorian Karate team that's heading to the Nationals in Perth on July 30th. The Nationals will be held from August 1st to August 3rd. Hannah is competing in the female 8-9 year old kata and the under 13 synchronised team. Jordan is competing in the male 8-9 year old kata and is the reserve for the under 13 synchronised team. As these two kids are only 8 years old and are the youngest male and female of a 218 person team, they are too young to be selected in the kumite (fighting) events, but that's their goal for next year. It's been a long 6 1/2 months for these little kids with training 5-6 times a week as well as compulsory tournaments they have had to attend, but they have enjoyed every minute of it. They are very excited about going away with all their friends they have made along the way, and can't wait to get to Perth to have fun and compete at their very first Australian Karate Championship whilst representing Victoria. We wish them them the very best and a successful tournament.
