HAPPY EASTER!
A few years ago, our long-time pastor and friend, Father Bill Bauman died during Holy Week. The year before his death he spoke with eighth graders preparing
to graduate about beginnings and endings, reflecting
on what had been and looking forward to what would
be, bidding farewell to the past and greeting the future.
One of them asked him about death--the ultimate farewell--and if he was afraid to die, and why or why not.
He replied, “No, because I talk with God everyday of my
life and I know that He is waiting for me on the other side
of the horizon. When He reaches His hand over for mine,
He knows that I will eagerly take it.”
This Lent, we, likewise, bid farewell to Father Francis
Schuele. Like Bill, Frank was eager to take the hand of
God and walk with Him to the place of no more sorrow,
no more suffering, no more sadness. Like Jesus, Frank
lived a passion of his own; his body had been battered,
bruised, bloodied, blistered and beaten; he was ready
to turn it in for the glorified body that is promised to
all who believe. Easter is a good time to contemplate
sermons from the grave or spiritual messages from
our loved ones who remind us of the glory beyond
this world. Yet we know that the greatest sermon ever
preached on Easter morning contained no words. It
was Jesus’ message to not believe in graves or death,
for He burst forth from the grave to new life.
As we rejoice in the new life that is manifest all around
us in springtime’s green grass, budding trees, beautiful
flowers, luscious plants, bright sun and seasonal rain
showers, let us be reminded of God’s promise of new
life. We will be planting trees, shrubs, flowers this Easter in memory of Father Schuele and Father Bauman.

Father Bill wrote to us a few weeks before he died: “I
can actually feel the beauty of spring: the blue skies, daffodils and hyacinths. I also feel your well-wishes and joyful prayers for me. Though some days bring tremendous
pain, I would not want to miss those in which I can say:
‘Lord, if you had made me for this day and nothing else, it
would have been worth living!’ As I prepare to surrender
myself to the Lord in fullness, gratitude still comes easily. I
am thankful for a wonderful family and for our church--it
is truly the People of God, and I am thankful for the life of a
priest. Please pray with me now that I may keep my hands
lifted up to God in joy, saying: ‘Come, Lord Jesus’!”
As we contemplate the death and resurrection of
Our Savior so do we offer gratitude for the heavenly life
that our loved ones share with Him. We are Easter People who believe in new life. So let us keep our hands
lifted up to God in joy!

Why does the priest break off a particle of the host
and drop it in the chalice?
What you are describing happens during the Communion Rite after the breaking of the bread, and just before
the Lamb of God. It is called "commingling" and dates
back many centuries. In the early Church, there was
only one Eucharistic celebration in each city on Sunday. The entire Christian community gathered together
and the bishop celebrated the Eucharist. As Christianity grew, it becaume physically impossible to gather
for one liturgy, and Mass was celebrated throughout
the area. The presider or priest was appointed by the
bishop. A small portion o f the host consecrated by the
bishop was taken to each of the Eucharistic celebrations over which the priest was presiding. This fraction
was mingled into the chalice.
Today, the priest breaks off a small fraction of the
larger host used at Mass and places it into the chalice
with the prayer: "May this mingling of the Body and
Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us
who receive it." The commingling symbolizes the Lord's
resurrection. In death, body and blood are often separated, but in life they are united. This small symbol
serves to remind us that the sacrifice of Jesus is one
that gives us all life. In the Mass, we join ourselves to his
death, so that we might also rise with him to life.

Stewardship Corner
Reflection on Sunday's Gospel
In the Easter Vigil reading from
Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans,
we are reminded that we are alive
in Christ. And it is not merely once a
year that we remember what Jesus
did to give us this new life, forgiveness and peace.
Every day, good stewards remember their baptism. They remember that they are united with
Jesus in his death; that daily they
drown the old sinful nature, and
that daily they rise to their new life
in Christ.
Let us be mindful every day, especially when we are troubled by
life or tempted by sin, that our lives
are no longer about us, but about
Christ’s active, loving presence
within us. That is our baptism. Alleluia! He is risen!

Survey for the Ordinary Synod on the Family 2015
Just as the Vatican asked for broad input in preparing
for the Extraordinary Synod, they’ve asked for broad
feedback as they prepare for the Ordinary Synod in
October of 2015. While the original survey is closed,
an alternative one is available through Wednesday,
April 15, at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/
SynodSurveyResponses. From this input the USCCB
will prepare a summary for the Church in the United
States. These responses will be used to help guide
the discussions at the Ordinary Synod.

On April 13, 2014, Reat Underwood and Dr. William Corporon were killed at the Jewish Community Center, and
Terri LaManno was killed at Village Shalom by Frazier
Glenn Cross, a white supremacist in an apparent hate
crime. Activities are being planned this year from April
7-13, concluding with a walk on April 13 starting at
Church of the Resurrection.

“Hate crimes and senseless acts of violence continue
at a rampant pace...One act of kindness will start the
ripple to change the world. Choose one day or seven,
but choose to be part of the change. Join us the week
of April 7-13, 2015 by performing acts of kindness.” Go

Bread for the World’s Offering of Letters
Bread for the World works to reduce hunger in the
United States and around the world. This year, they
are working to protect child nutrition programs in the
United States. Nearly 16 million children in the U.S. live
in households that struggle to put food on the table.
Many of these children have parents who have jobs
and work hard, but their wages aren’t high enough to
pay rent, utilities, transportation and food. Bread for
the World is asking people to write, call or email your
representatives and senators in Congress, urging them
to protect funding in our nation’s child nutrition programs—without cutting SNAP (food stamps). You can
find a sample letter along with the contact information
for your members of Congress at www.bread.org.

14, the group will share stories of loss and life of their
loved one as a healing experience. Practical suggestions will be given on how to process one’s grief. On
April 21, participants will look at grief as a total reaction
of their person. The group will explore the many ways
that grief affects a person’s life and daily activities. For

Barabbas is a 1950 novel which tells the story of Barabbas, the man whose life was exchanged for that of Jesus

death gave him new life. A great read for Lent!

Richard Rohr. “In this exploration of central themes of
Scripture, Richard Rohr transforms the written word,
discovering in these ancient texts a new and vital
meaning, relevant and essential for modern Christians.”

The Old Testament is the foundation for our story of
salvation history. It was the scripture for Jesus and the
early church. Yet reading the Old Testament can be

He is risen! Alleluia! Easter is the celebration of Jesus’
resurrection from the dead. But did you know that
Easter is not just a day, but a season?
Our liturgical year shows us that time is orderly and
reliable. Monday follows Sunday, spring follows winter. We call that ordinary time, time that is ordered and
makes sense to our experience.
But in the midst of our human experience of time,
two great events take place that shatter the ordinariness: the Incarnation (Christmas) and the Resurrection
(Easter). These seasons point to divine breakthroughs,
heaven come to earth, eternal come to finite, to reorient all we know of our human experience.
We are pretty good at understanding how to prepare for Easter. We know how to keep the liturgical
season of Lent. We abstain from meat on Fridays. We
fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We deepen
our experiences of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
But how do we keep the Easter season? One place we
can look is to the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA). The RCIA is meant to be a model for all adult
formation, because it is the process of conversion,
which is an ongoing process. In the RCIA, the celebration of the sacraments is not the end of the process.
The Easter season brings the fourth period of formation called mystagogy.
Mystagogy means “to lead through the mysteries.”
It is a time to dwell deeper on the experience of the
sacraments just received, to dive deeper into the mystery of God’s love, and to learn what it means to live as
Catholic Christians. Mystagogy points us to the truth
we don’t always practice: sacraments of initiation are
the beginning of Christian life and learning, not the
completion. Whether we were baptized this Easter, or
many years ago, we can benefit from lingering with
the mystery of the Resurrection. What this means for
us cannot be contained to one day. How we live our
lives transformed by the resurrected Christ will take us
at least a season to figure out.
To acknowledge God as mystery does not mean to
say God is unknowable. Rather, to acknowledge God
as mystery shows us that we cannot exhaust our understanding of God. God is the living God who continues to work in our lives. We hear from the prophet
Isaiah God saying to us: “From this time forward I make
you hear new things, hidden things that you have not
known. They are created now, not long ago; before today you have never heard of them so that you could
not say, ‘I already knew them’” (Is 48:6-7). We cannot
say we already know what the Resurrection means.
We have to discover it anew.
This Easter season may our hearts be open to the
new life God is sharing with us.
