Still, for our hardworking individuals who run the Club, both staff and volunteers, there are many other day-to-day considerations to weigh. At monthly Board of Governors meetings when our Treasurer explains the monthly Profit & Loss statement, what emerges as our “bottom line” is generally positive and accurate. This healthy state of affairs is the result of constant monitoring, plus a number of initiatives: As March turns to April, a concerted effort is underway to hire a General Manager. The Club has side-stepped this payroll commitment for a number of years now. However, juggling the demands of managing the WNDC as a museum, a social club, and an event space is very timeconsuming for volunteers. It is also an inefficient way to manage this building. In addition, our staff will benefit from more consistent supervision and I expect members to benefit greatly, as well. We have retained key staffers who are instrumental in the smooth functioning of the WNDC. We have continuing dialog with certain employees to monitor conflicts, while we’ve encouraged work place development. In the case of our chef, a new job description was established that enhances our kitchen operations, and reduces waste. The VP of Administration has worked hard to oversee the development of a new Personnel Manual, and we oversee a monthly staff meeting that includes the entire team. Employees who were not functioning in a professional capacity, or who lacked sufficient work were let go, accompanied by a generous severance package. Reception: Wednesday, April 8, 2015 Shanthi Chandrasekar Ballroom Gallery Image Right: Chakra-Orange Shanthi Chandrasekar is a selftaught artist who studied physics and psychology. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual. Shanthi’s works have been displayed in galleries and institutions throughout the Washington D.C. area. She has won numerous awards for her artwork including a recent grant from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2013 for Works on Paper. _____________________________________________ Margaret Huddy Upstairs Gallery Image Right: Wind at the Capitol Margaret Huddy's luminous, realistic watercolors capture the play of light on land and cityscapes. Painting a subject, such as the monumental buildings in Washington, DC, or architectural monuments around the world in the varied light from dawn to dusk, helps her study the effects of light. Years of experience working en plein air enable her to capture the quality of light she desires when back in the studio. Margaret Huddy is a signature, award winning member of the American and National Watercolor Societies as well as the Watercolor USA Honor Society. Time: 9:00 am - 10:30 am Price: $10 Members & Non-Members (Includes continental breakfast) 20th Annual Women Ambassadors Conference Panel Discussion March will be a big month for U.S.Israeli relations and for the Middle East. On March 3, Prime Minister Netanyahu will address a joint session of the U.S. Congress to oppose an Obama-Administration-backed deal on Iran’s nuclear program. On March 17, Israel will hold parliamentary elections, and then form a new coalition government, with or without Netanyahu. On April 1, the Palestinian Authority is scheduled to join the International Criminal Court, opening the door to possible international sanctions against Israel. WNDC member Warren Clark, husband of Betsy Spiro Clark, will assess the impact of these developments on U.S.-Israeli relations, the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, and in the broader Middle East. Ambassador Clark is a retired Foreign Service officer who served in the Middle East, Africa, and at the United Nations. Since 2008, he has been Executive Director of Churches for Middle East Peace, a coalition of national church groups that conducts education and advocacy to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. ______________________________________________ The Women Ambassadors Foundation and Howard University will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Annual Women Ambassadors Conference on April 2 and 3, 2015. As thenFirst Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton put it on the occasion of her Howard University Commencement address in 1998, "The Women Ambassadors Conference is one more example of Howard University pushing the envelope." Time: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Price: $22.50 Members & Non-Members The objectives of the conference are to honor the women ambassadors (of 176 ambassadors in post in Washington, only 20 are women) and to provide college students of the DC area with an overview of the hot-button issues in international affairs. Each panel is composed of a foreign diplomat, a professor, an NGO representative/ expert and a U.S. government official in order to allow the students to see the same topic from various angles. For three years she authored the paper's "Loose Lips" column on DC politics. She later covered local business, the 2006 mayoral race, and police, fire, and emergency medical services as a Washington Post reporter. From 2009 to 2014, Elissa worked for the D.C. In the late 1960s, it was designated as a fallout shelter, and became a short-lived food court in the mid-1990s. It has remained empty since then. The nonprofit Arts Coalition for the Dupont Underground (ACDU)—founded by architect Julian Hunt, co-principal of Hunt Laudi Studio, a D.C.based architecture and urban design firm—will redevelop this former trolley station. Beginning by transforming the east platform, the project will activate the space through art- and design-related events, public performances and other gatherings, as well as temporary commercial uses. ACDU will also be working on long-term plans to permanently redevelop all 75,000 square feet as a mixed-use cultural destination. It will showcase new artists and designers, and new technologies. ____________________________________________________ Thursday, April 16, 2015 (Luncheon) Monday, April 13, 2015 (Luncheon) Alexander McCall Smith The Handsome Man's De Luxe Café: No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Alexander McCall Smith is the author of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, the Isabel Dalhousie series, the Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, and the 44 Scotland Street series. Altman The Price of Inheritance, Washington Women Writers Series Two Social Security Works!: Why Social Security Isn’t Going Broke and How Expanding It Will Help Us All After eight years in the American Furniture department at Christie’s, twenty-nine-year-old Carolyn Everett is a rising star. But one wrong decision and a scandal leaves her unemployed and broken. Desperate to piece her life back together, Carolyn leaves New York City to work in a tiny antique store in Newport, Rhode Island. The Price of Inheritance is a rare find of a novel. Engaging, suspenseful, and full of intrigue, it delves into the elite world of big bucks deals and dangerous black market promises, where one woman must decide whether she’s willing to gamble her greatest asset—her heart. Karin Tanabe is a Washington, DC-based fiction writer and former Politico reporter whose writing has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Houston Chronicle, Newsday, The Miami Herald, and The Washington Post. She has made frequent appearances as a celebrity and politics expert on television, including on Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, and CNN. The book will be available for purchase and signing. WNDC For more than 30 years, billionaires have been trying to convince the public that Social Security is headed for collapse. They are wrong. In fact, the time is right to expand Social Security, the key to retirement dignity for millions of workers and their families. Nancy J. Altman has a 40-year background in the areas of Social Security and private pensions. From 1983 to 1989 she was on the faculty of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and taught at Harvard Law School. In1982, she was Alan Greenspan's assistant when he chaired the bipartisan commission that developed the 1983 Social Security amendments. Before that, Ms. Altman worked with Senator John Danforth on these issues. There is much more about her that makes her the person to talk to us about this very important issue. She has written many books and holds many positions that encompass her life's work. The book will be available for purchase and signing. 1526 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20036 Phone: (202)232-7363 www.democraticwoman.org 3 Friday, April 24, 2015 (Evening) Thursday, April 23, 2015 (Evening) DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Reception and speaker program. Running for mayor, she received the endorsement of the Washington Post, which described her as “smart, hardworking, and independent-minded…[who] has shown herself to be an effective advocate for the interests of her demanding ward and a leading voice for education reform and good government.” On November 4, 2014, voters elected Muriel as the seventh elected, and the second woman mayor of the District of Columbia. ______________________________________________ Tuesday, April 28, 2015 (Evening) Status of Jobs for Liberals and Progressives Panel Discussion Time: 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm Price: $15 Members/$20 Non-Members Cash Bar and Appetizers The Great Recession of 2008 took a massive toll on the American people. Since then, we’ve moved in the right direction, but not fast enough, and have not reached our goal. Come hear different perspectives on the U.S. employment status, job types and qualifications, and future trends for liberals and progressives. Panelists will include Neera Tanden, President, Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improve the lives of all Americans and change the country, through bold, progressive ideas, strong leadership and concerted action. The event cosponsor is Network 4Progress, which uses “word of mouth” media messaging and social networking to support a “New Kind of Politics & Citizenship.” WNDC SPAT! Bringing Oysters Back to the Chesapeake Bay Time: 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm Price: $25 (Light Supper $15; Movie $10) Cash Bar After centuries of over-harvesting and devastating diseases, the Chesapeake Bay oyster populations plummeted, along with industry profits and the Bay’s health. Now, native oysters are more abundant, fewer are dying from disease, and more than a billion hatchery raised baby oysters have been added to the Bay. The film’s director and producer, WNDC member Sandy Cannon-Brown, is passionate about ecosystems and their inhabitants. After working for U.S. News & World Report, Associated Press, McGraw-Hill, WJLA-TV7 and KTBCTV7, she founded VideoTakes, a video production small business. Her career has taken her to the rainforests of Central and South America, the Northern Great Plains and the Everglades. She has produced programs for the Children’s National Medical Center, As associate director of American University’s Center for Environmental Filmmaking she taught filmmaking for ten years. Both she and her students have received top awards. ______________________________________________ Thursday, April 30, 2015 (Tour & Lunch) Tour of Lincoln’s Cottage Time: Depart WNDC (car share) 10:15 am or meet at Lincoln Cottage at 10:45 am Price: Tour and Picnic Lunch: $30 for Members, $40 for Non-Members. President Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary lived in this Gothic Revival Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home in Washington, DC from June to November, 1862 -1864. Lincoln’s time at the Cottage served as bookends for Civil War — he first visited the grounds three days after his inauguration and last rode out to the site on April 13, 1964, the day before his assassination. Our tour will include the house and visitor center, followed by a picnic lunch on the cottage grounds. Afterwards, those interested may visit the nearby historic Rock Creek Cemetery to see the famous sculpture by Augustus SaintGaudens - “Grief,” commissioned by essayist Henry Adams after the death of his wife Clover in 1885. For driving instructions to Lincoln Cottage, contact Patricia Fitzgerald, [email protected], (202) 232 -7363. The tour is limited to 24 participants, so please register soon. 1526 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20036 Phone: (202)232-7363 www.democraticwoman.org 4 Tuesday, May 5, 2015 (Luncheon) President’s Letter continued from page 1…. Sigrid Fry-Revere Solving the Organ Shortage: Lessons from Iran Dr. Sigrid Fry-Revere is the first westerner ever to interview legal kidney sellers in Iran, the one country in the world that claims to have solved its kidney shortage. She spent two months in that country interviewing her subjects and filming without permission from the government. Rarely does an adventure story carry such social significance. The Iranian system of organ donation is not perfect, but it is nothing like the black markets of other countries and also much different from what Americans have been led to believe. The Iranians have tried many different approaches and learned much over 30 years of experimenting with compensating donors. Come and hear what there is to learn from Iran and see how understanding the history of compensated kidney donation in Iran may be the key to solving the organ shortage in the United States and elsewhere. Finally, I’d like to address some misinformation that plans are being readied to transfer ownership of the Club to the Educational Foundation. To be clear, there are no current plans to transfer ownership. Any such plans would mean that for some time now, we’ve been in serious dialog with a tax attorney. Let me clarify that the idea has been “floated” with an attorney at just one meeting. The real purpose of this meeting was to determine the need to budget for a slight modification in our property tax exemption. Apparently, this idea of transferring ownership is revived from time to time around the Board Room table, but it has never before survived serious legal scrutiny. We are finding that this is true now as well. Please be assured that the Club will continue to function as it always has, with a solid team that works to improve upon the functionality of our mansion as a social and political Club, and a treasured museum. Lastly, if you have any concerns at all, tell me! Pat Fitzgerald always knows where to find me. —Anna Fierst, President ______________________________________________ Sharing our Knowledge and Stories With YWLP This year’s students in the Young Women’s Leadership Program have displayed a keen interest in our club. Unfortunately, the multiple snow days and delays have affected their ability to visit and attend programming. The students have articulated interest in issues surrounding women in leadership, current political events, social justice (particularly with respect to women), and the suffrage movement. The EF is asking members who have personal experience or specific knowledge in these area to meet with the students to provide a one hour presentation/informal talk for the students. These presentations would occur at the Club, preferably over lunch time on Fridays or other days in which the club is not booked for a program. If you would like to help stimulate and education these young women leaders, please contact Noreen Buchanan ([email protected]). ______________________________________________ Luncheon Schedule 11:30 A.M. 12:15 P.M.
