Mission Statement
St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds.
We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling,
we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our
word and example.
We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community
in which we live.
LENTEN MOVIE – SEVEN DEADLY SINS - SEVEN LIVELY VIRTUES
On Sunday, March 29, we will be showing a Lenten movie at 3p.m. in the basement of the Parish Center. After
the movie there will be time for discussion. The movie is entitled Seven Deadly Sins - Seven Lively Virtues and
features Fr. Robert Barron.

Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to
take up our own cross and follow Jesus through death to life.
THE WAY OF THE CROSS – DOWNTOWN CHICAGO
On Good Friday, April 3, the Catholic lay movement Communion and Liberation will lead a Way of the Cross
through downtown Chicago. Through choral music, Gospel passages, reflections, and a silent procession,
participants will have the opportunity to enter more deeply into the events of Good Friday and their meaning for
us today. It will begin at 8:45a.m. in Daley Plaza (Dearborn/Washington) and will end at Holy Name Cathedral
(State/Superior) at noon. For further information call 312-725-7370.
ST. GREGORY YOUNG ADULTS SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUE 2015
Any young adults who are interested in playing in a Catholic Young Adults co-ed Summer 16 inch softball
league which takes place at Winnemac Park on Monday evenings are asked to contact Susan Boyle at
[email protected]. Opening day is May 18, 2015. The season will conclude with playoffs at the end of August.
Players are required to be at least 21 years of age, but participants do not have to be Catholic to play. ALL ability
levels are needed: everyone plays, and no one sits! Women may use mitts. The registration fee is $70.00 which
includes payments for the equipment, fields, umpires, t-shirts and free pizza after every game at our sponsor bar,
K’s Dugout, located at 1938 W Foster Avenue! If this sounds like a good time to you, sign up and join us!

winning three games. This year we hope to make it to the playoffs.

There is a new link on our St. Gregory the Great website. Go to www.stgregory.net. Click on the pulldown menu
that says Education and Ministries. At the bottom of the listing of resources, there is a link that says Social Service
Resources. This link contains a listing of social service resources that are available through the Catholic Church,
through the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois and on a national basis. One link provides a listing of Soup
Kitchens and Food Pantries that are available in our local neighborhood and in the City of Chicago. The other link
provides listings of various social service resources in a variety of different areas from a Domestic Abuse hotline to
free legal services. This is a work in progress. As we discover further resources, we will add them to this listing.
If you know of any social service resources that are not listed here, please let us know so that we can update our

YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME
Take In
Individual Christians are never meant to be closed in on themselves. Jesus says, “Love one
another as I have loved you.” In effect, the disciples of Jesus live lives open to others. The
same is true for Christian families built on the foundations of the sacrament of Marriage. These
families, if they are to be true to their Christian identity, are centers of hospitality. They take in
others. They receive them and support them. They make a space, especially for those who are
most in need.
Taking in others and caring for them, of course, does not mean that families are disrupted or meant to be without
their own integrity. It does mean that every family has a mission that it must discover. This mission is to be a
receiving presence in this world, whether that is in a soup kitchen or through adoption or more direct care of
relatives in need. In every case, the Christian family lives beyond itself.

FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN IN NEED THANK YOU
Dear Fr. Paul and Parishioners of St. Gregory the Great,
Thank you for your kindness and for providing the Foundation for Children in Need an opportunity to introduce
our mission work and sponsorship program to your wonderful Parish.
I felt so welcomed by Fr. Paul, Fr. John and all the people I had the pleasure to meet. The choir director and
the singers were very kind to me and many parishioners took a sponsorship brochure with plans to consider
sponsoring a needy child. Many of our blessings are often taken for granted and the idea of having clean water
to drink, attending school regularly and experiencing the benefits of healthcare are a given in our world. To
help the families and children of St. Gregory the Great recognize that so many in the world go without these
basic necessities and to learn that we can help them is a very important message to share. If each family could
reach out and help one person in need and bring hope into their life, our Catholic Faith in action becomes
fruitful in a very tangible way. Jesus tells us, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters that you do
unto me.” If you have not already done so, please take a blue F.C.N. sponsorship brochure in the back of the
Church and sponsor a needy child today. It only cost $20 a month to bring hope, joy and love and to build new
dreams for a bright future. Thank you again for inviting me to share insights to the Foundation for Children in
Need, and may God Bless each one of you abundantly for your kindness and generosity. Please visit our website at

MINISTRY OF THE WEEK - ST. GREGORY SINGERS
The St. Gregory Singers are a group of young voices who come together to bring music to St. Gregory the Great
Parish and to our Andersonville community. They meet every Sunday to rehearse from 11:45a.m-1p.m. in the
choir loft of the Church. They are open to anyone from 6-18 years old. St. Gregory Singers work together on
basic music theory, exploring new music, singing for St. Gregory the Great Parish Masses and caroling in the

SPIRITUAL READING/BOOK DISCUSSION – LIFE’S GREATEST LESSON
Beginning in March, all parishioners who received a copy of the book Life’s Greatest Lesson by Allen Hunt are
invited to join Sr. Regina in a discussion of the book after the 8:30a.m. Mass in the basement of the Parish Center.
The discussion will focus on the four main themes found in the book - Monday, Mar. 9 (Love all you can),
Monday, Mar. 16 (Earn all you can), Monday, Mar. 23 (Give all you can), and Monday, Mar. 30 (Save all you can).
