Festival of Sri
Kapali Temple.
The finale
was grand in
keeping with the
event - the kalyanam of the lord
with his beloved.
It followed all
the rituals that
we follow at a
wedding including presentation
of a variety of sweets.
The eastern yard of the
temple was packed with
people that Saturday night,
eager to witness the
ceremonies.
On the sidelines, we
caught the enthusiastic
pilgrim, his kid hoisted on
his shoulders to get a better
view of the rituals and a
band of nagaswaram-tavil
artistes performing for the
kalyanam - there were nagaswaram concerts on all
evenings of the festival.
On an informal note,
Prayathnam, a forum of
classical dance teachers
hosted three dance recitals
in the 16-pillar mantapam
outside the temple featuring
young, talented dancers. Sriranjani (seen
in photo on this page),
Gowthami Venkatesulu
and R. Rukmani performed here on three
evenings.
Quietly, volunteers
and students of Sri
Ramakrishna Math
institutions worked hard
and overnight to clear
the leftover food, plates
and cups which had
been dumped on all
the mada streets and
around on Arabathumoovar day, after feasting on the food and
drink offered by donors.
It was this social act
that must convert the
minds of devotees who
tend to be
irresponsible after
taking part
in a grand
religious
event.

Mylapore was ransacked on
Thursday by members of a
small political group which
claimed it was protesting
against the killings of TN
wood - cutters in the forests
of Andhra.
The men broke showcases and pulled down shelves
but did not harm the staff.
They then asked people
outside to take away food stuff; some did.
Staff said they were
shocked by the incident.
The store is part of a
chain based in Andhra.

Three weeks ago, radio jockey Sulabha invited
me over to an event that FM radio station, Radio One
(94.3) was hosting that evening.
To recognise people of the city who had charted a
unique course.
The station called it - Chennai At Its Best.
The event was a culmination of a series that this transIndia radio had produced on people in this city and in the
state who had made significant contributions in their own
ways.
I had been interviewed for that series. You know how
these productions work. They record your stuff in parts and
the RJ sandwiches your stories with the popular music of
the day.
The event started late - the lights, audio and frills folks
were still putting things in place when guests began to arrive
at a hotel in T. Nagar.
Sulabha told me that they had a TedEx kind of event in
mind, so it would be snappy on this weekday evening.
Radio One chose ten people, a mix of the young and
spirited and of veterans the city still respects.
Among them were Sujith Kumar, a IT professional
who spends all his weekends touring the countryside, talking
to young students on skills and career prospects. Ramnath
Chandrasekar who travels into India’s deep, shoots pictures
and makes films and educates children on nature and ecoissues.
There was also Jennifer, who pioneered a English series
on Chennai Doordarshan and headed NDTV for ages. Krish
Ashok, a IT professional who uses irreverent humour to drive
creativity, Mohamed Ali who manages an online Foodies
community space, Dr Kamala Selvaraj who people still call
the Test Tube Baby Doc, Sriram Sridharan who runs the
Gourmei Market chain of food stores, HR professional Jayanthi Vaidhayanathan who shares her expertise with NGOs
and the much-feted food entrepreneur Sarath Babu whose
rags to riches story is still talked about. One person could not
attend.
Each Chennai awardee spoke about their life, their
work and life’s lessons and each story was colorful, educative and inspiring.
Recognising people of our city, especially the ones who
keep a low profile and contribute immensely is a must.
The KSA Trust, promoted by chartered accountants has
been for some years also hosting a ‘Champions of Chennai’
event - five people from different vocations are recognised
with a unique award at a smartly-run show in our city.
Perhaps, like Bangalore this city needs a body which
must decorate the best of this city from all walks of life.
Keep the state out of this. But ensure the body is credible and
respected and its selection is the best for the year.
Recognise the people who make this city.
Students of guru Sasirekha Raammohan presented a dance production based on
harathiyar s songs and verses at the campus of TN yal sai Nataka Manram last week.
Three productions were funded by the Manram. Sasirekha manages a
haratanatyam academy in Mandavelipakkam.

Puram went in for a change two weeks ago and got that
message across even locally by having banners at every

wish to do something about
civic issues are joining an
informal community group
which hopes to formalise
itself soon. Last Sunday’s
meet at Nageswara Rao Park,
Luz saw more people join the
group which was formed a
few weeks ago.
The subjects and the
views expressed at this meet
were varied and covered
hawking, mada streets traffic
regulations, ‘walk only’ ideas,
involving schools in campaigns and more.

TEACHER
The murder of a
San Thome teacher has been
cracked by city police. A close
relative has been arrested.
The body was found in a drain
in Madambakkam in the city’s
south side. The woman lived
in North Madras and had been
invited to a meeting on
Saturday by the accused.
Police say the accused slit
the woman’s throat when she
insisted on the loan she had
given be repaid. The woman
was a primary school teacher
at a well - known school in
San Thome.

from the temple around the mada streets to a
special lunch at her residence.
Joining her were sisters Indira and Padma
and sister-in-law Kalpana and others - to make
and distribute 11 kilos of kesari and 60 litres of
buttermilk on Arabathumoovar day.
“This is a tradition we love to carry on,”
says Jamuna.
FOOD FOR PILGRIMS
AT PANGUNI TIME
Dozens of Mylaporeans keep a
Panguni festival tradition to this day.
Providing food to guests and
people who head to Sri Kapali temple in
Mylapore.
At Balasubramaniam’s residence,
this year marked the 101st year of
this Panguni tradition. This Mylaporean is 92 years old and his daughter
Revathi made arrangements to feed
750 people on Arabathumoovar day.

The elai sapad menu included
badhusha, medhu pakoda and javarisi payasam. Also on each banana
leaf was a two-rupee coin.
“In the old days we used to feed
over one thousand people and left a
one-rupee coin for our guests,” said
Revathi, resident of Chitrakulam
North Street.

One afternoon is
reserved for Sri Kapali Temple priests - a puja and
elai sapad during penguin fest.
For Arbathumoovar day, the trio arrange to
cook puliogare and sweet and ven-pongal
which is served to devotees from 8 am
to 8 pm.
The biggest service is provided by
late flutist Narayana Iyer’s family of
Mathala Narayana Street, off the Mangolai junction. (photo on left)
The menu list is much like the one
you would want at a big, fat wedding sweet and ven-pongal, brinji, sambhar
and tomato rice, vegetable biryani, idli
and sambhar, mixture and sweets and
bread-channa. Cooked in parts over the
whole day, spaces on the street are used
for storing, slicing and cooking.
‘This is a 110-year old tradition that
Narayana Iyer’s wife began in a small
way, “ said one family member. “Funds
keep flowing from February onwards.”
Their estimate is that 25,000 people
line up at their food window on this
small street on Arbathumoovar day.
The food is
great and available in plenty.
People need
to avoid waste
and dispose the
leftovers and
plates properly. This would
make the celebration wow.

dogs
Someone suggesting a
‘thuggish’ solution to teach a
lesson to dog walkers in the
Letters column of Mylapore
Times is certainly
objectionable.
Though I object to the disregard some dog walkers have,
allowing their pets to defecate
in front of neighbour’s houses,
one can not come down on
all pet owners who walk their
dogs.
There are thousands of
stray dogs in the city wandering around in search of food
and water and I wonder how
many of those “keep my street
clean” champions have any
compassion for the abandoned
animals.

attitude
is disgusting
While endorsing the
anguish shown by a Mylapore
Times reader on pet dogs, I
wish to add that in all fairness
to the dog owners, we must
admire those who care
for the pets.
But what is disgusting
and despicable is the shameless act of a few owners, who
show their love at the expense
of their fellow human beings,
who surreptiously encroach
upon others’ boundary and let
their pride dogs defecate in
front of others’ houses. If they
truthfully love their pets, they
should also learn to like, if
notlove, their dogs’ excreta.

Good pavements in R. A. Puram;
thank you Corporation
It is indeed heartening that Chennai Corporation has
improved the footpaths and pavements at the Billroth
Hospitals circle in R.A.Puram. This was a long-pending
concern of residents.

What purpose tiled pavement, steel rails
in R. A. Puram?
For the recently constructed glittering hand railing and the tiled pavement on both sides of the road at
the 2nd Main Road - C P Ramasamy Road junction, the
Corporation should be complimented.
But the purpose and utility of this beautification is
not understood. If this is meant to provide safety and
comfort for the pedestrian, it is far from it. If any one
tries to walk on the pavement, he finds huge obstacles on
the way in the form of trees, EB boxes, etc.
Further, the pedestrian cannot cross the road at the
junction, as the railing prevents him from doing so. To
avoid these problems, if one has to walk along the edge
of the road, the purpose of the pavement is defeated.
While on this, may I point out the haphazard manner in which cables, presumably belonging to the cable
operators, are hung loose either at very low levels or
thrown on the ground on both the northern and southern sides of the St. Mary’s Road - C. P. Ramasamy Road
junction. These are hazards to the pedestrian, particularly during late evenings and nights.

Build permanent canopy
for temple festival
Every year a temporary canopy is erected at considerable expense across the main R. K. Mutt Road in front
of the Mylapore Temple tank in connection with the
temple festivals.
For this purpose holes are dug on the road for the
supporting pillars. After the festival the holes remain,
causing accidents to vehicles and percolation of rain
water eventually damaging the road surface.
I suggest that the temple authorities and the Corporation of Chennai collaborate and build a permanent
canopy across this road supported only by pillars on
either side of the road with nothing in between.
The initial cost will be high but the annual expense
will be only for maintenance. It will be more
aesthetic also.

HUGE CONGREGATION AT
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE AT
SAN THOME CATHEDRAL
Over two thousand people gathered in the
campus of the St Thomas Cathedral in San
Thome on Apr 3 for the open air Mass in Tamil to mark Good Friday, the day Christians
recall the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
The service was a long one, with symbolic
genuflection in front of crucifixes by the
congregation and Holy Communion. The final
Way of the Cross service was also held, with
children enacting roles on the events related
to Jesus’ last days. The service was beamed
live by Madha TV. A sound and light show
on the commemoration was also scheduled.

MUSIC AND DANCE AT
LOCAL PLAYSCHOOL
Canopo - Illuminating Tiny Minds, a Play
school and daycare centre, organized its first
annual and graduation day themed - ‘Under
Water’ on Apr 2 at Russian Cultural Centre,
Alwarpet. The chief guests - music director
James Vasanthan and singer and director
Mr. S.P.B. Charan distributed the prizes and
also surprised the audience with a few special
numbers.
The students charmed the audience with
their melodious singing, energetic dancing and adorable acting. A show - stopping
fashion show was also put by the little ones.
The event concluded with the graduation
ceremony, wherein the students of Canopo
adorned in little graduation coats were sworn
in to receive their certificates from the chief

About 100 special children of V-Excel
Educational Trust presented a musical ‘Garden of Light’ depicting the journey of
earth’s revival to a beautiful landscape at
their annual day celebrations held on Mar 19
at Narada Gana Sabha, Alwarpet. The chief
guest was Dr. T. V. Somanathan, director
(special projects), The World Bank and the
guest of honour was Dr. Mariazeena Johnson,
director, Sathyabama University.

The students who have been preparing for
this event for about three months contributed
to the script and also hand crafted the props
(a rock castle, mines, quarries, a high wall,
grass lands and mountains) themselves.
Skills taught to the students on a regular
basis like socialization skills, language and
movement were incorporated into the musical. Yoga, which is a part of the curriculum
for older children, was also integrated into

4. VISUALLY IMPAIRED WOMEN
PERFORM FOR WOMEN’S DAY
About 25 visually impaired girls put up
an amazing performance at an event organised on Mar 21 at the Lotus Blind Welfare
Trust of India, Mylapore for Women’s Day.
The students who had been preparing for
more than a week danced to kolattam and
western numbers, rendered poems and also
talked about the need to respect and honour
women. Retired High Court Judge - Prabha
Sridevan was the chief guest. Executive director of Shriram City Union Finance - Subhasri Sriram, advocate Kalyan Jhabakh and
Palanpur Jain Association’s Shailesh Mehta
were the guests of honour.
