City Cabs’ fat boy slimming
Steve Darby edges closer
to target weight loss
Steve Darby has always been
larger than life but now he is
aiming to lose five stone in five
months to raise £5,000 for
charity before his 55th birthday.
A well- known figure in the
Brighton business community,
Steve is being supported in his
battle of the bulge by Norman
Cook, aka Fatboy Slim.
Steve, who works with Brighton
& Hove City Cabs, that has the
phone number 55-55-55, will be
taking part in the gruelling
Brighton to Paris cycle ride on
June 26 to raise funds for the
Brighton & Hove Albion
Powerchair Football Team.
Steve said: “I am really thrilled to
have lost three stone but still have
another two to go. The cycling was
tough going at the start but is
getting easier as I shed the
pounds and I’m feeling a lot
healthier. I’m aiming to raise
£5,000 for a fantastic charity so if
you can give a few pounds to help
this great cause, I’d be really
grateful.”
As well as raising the much
needed cash, by losing five
stone he hopes to get rid of
the disease Diabetes 2.
Steve began his weight loss
battle at the start of this year
and with 12 weeks still to go he
has already dropped from 22
to 19 stone.

AbleandWilling to
the rescue!
When City Cabs needed thousands of
branded mugs and pens, they knew
just the people to help.
AbleandWilling (A & W), a Brighton &
Hove City Council backed business
where 90% of employees have
disabilities, stepped up to the mark.
City Cabs uses the mugs and pens for
events such as the annual Freshers’
Fairs for both Sussex and Brighton
Universities.
City Cabs Managing Director Andy
Cheesman said: “We always have
fantastic service from ableandwilling who
produce high quality products at
competitive prices. It’s great to support a
company that is a real social enterprise.”
A&W, which believes in dignity
through work and fair pay for all in its
company, has helped many disabled
people move on into full time
employment, and is still helping many
more to do the same.
Wherever possible it aims to be
environmentally friendly, and
welcomes site visits from potential
customers to see its facilities and
work conditions.
Leo runs first marathon
for Rockinghorse
Leo Allkanjari has been pounding the
streets of Brighton in preparation for
his first marathon.
He is one of thousands of runners
who will take part in the Brighton
Marathon on April 12, now a highlight
event in the city’s sporting calendar.
For Leo, who works at Ben Shaw’s
Brighton, it will be his first marathon
but he has been training since
September and is hoping for a time of
between four-and-a-half and five
hours.
Leo, 36, said: “I just thought to run it for
a great charity like Rockinghorse would
be a really good thing to do. I never
realised how much was involved in
running a marathon and how it needs
just as much mental preparation as
physical but I’ve really enjoyed it.
“I’ve met up with others who are also
running for Rockinghorse and it was
great to hear
that the money
we raise will be
used for an
outside soft
play area for children at the hospital.”
Leo is aiming to raise £500 for
Rockinghorse and anyone who
would like to donate money can

Ben Shaws works with the
country’s first community
owned pub – The Bevy
Ben Shaws Brighton, now the largest
independent company of its kind on
the south coast, is a supplier to The
Bevy – the UK’s first community
owned pub on a housing estate.
As a supplier of soft fizzy drinks and
fruit juices, plus bag in the box wines,
Ben Shaws owner Andy Cheesman is
delighted to be involved with the
community pub in Hillside, Brighton,
that opened in December after a four
year campaign by local people.
With a troubled history behind it, the
pub was closed and for a while it was
uncertain whether it would reopen
but local people fought hard to keep
it in the community.
Now managed by Chris Pobjoy, the
pub is owned by 700 local
shareholders and aims to be at the
hub of the community. It is run as a
not-for-profit co-operative with all
profits ploughed back into the
community which also has space
available for community groups and
sports teams.
Chris Pobjoy said: “It is only three
months since we opened but we’ve have
a fantastic response from the community
and the pub is being used by a variety of
groups so we are really achieving what
the campaigners fought to achieve.”
Andy Cheesman said: “The Bevy is an
amazing example of what happens
when a community works together and
we’re thrilled to be working alongside
such a dedicated team of people.”
