OVERVIEW
This Professional Skills Course, while based largely on the course conducted by the UK Institute and
Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), will still be highly relevant and useful for actuaries at large. The course
will contain general discussions on professional conduct of actuaries as well as some short videos
followed by group discussions, touching on various situations we may commonly face as actuaries.
ASM recognises 2 hours for Professionalism from this course. For IFoA members, this should be able
to count towards the 2 Professionalism CPD hours requirements. For members of other international
bodies, you may record this as Professionalism hours according to your respective CPD schemes.

Mark Birch, BSc FIA, FSAS, FASM
Director, Risk Consulting and Software, South East Asia
Profile
Mark is Director of Towers Watson’s Risk Consulting and Software Practice for South East Asia, based
in Singapore. He also is the Company’s Asia Pacific Leader for its ‘Professional Excellence’ program.
This is one of Towers Watson’s five core values and the name for the full range of the Company’s
quality efforts, including its Code of Business Conduct and Ethics. The key goal of Professional
Excellence is to ensure that all employees produce excellent work whilst maintaining personal and
professional integrity.
Mark qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1988 and has had a broad-ranging career
working in both consulting and corporate financial services roles.
His early career was spent at a number of blue chip UK financial services companies where he held a
number of actuarial, marketing and broader management roles. These included experience at the
financial services arm of one of the UK’s leading retail organisations where he established a strategy
for the successful marketing of life, general and investment products in-store and through the
company’s customer database. He moved to Singapore twelve years ago, where he switched from
corporate roles to consulting. He joined Towers Watson in 2007, following periods working for
another actuarial consultancy and managing his own firm. Mark therefore has been actively
involved in many aspects of a life insurance operation both from within the company as an
employee and with the external perspective of a consultant.
Mark currently holds a number of Appointed Actuary positions in Singapore and in Sri Lanka. He also
has led actuarial valuation, product development and due diligence activities for several M&A
transactions across the region.
