The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has classified prescription drug
abuse as an epidemic. According to a 2010 study, approximately 7
million people in the U.S. or 2.7 percent of the population, annually abuse
prescription drugs. Many people who get involved with illegal drugs start
with prescription drugs as they are frequently viewed as safer than illegal
drugs because they are prescribed by doctors. CDC data published
in February of 2013 showed opioid analgesics were involved in about
three of every four pharmaceutical overdose deaths. We will discuss in
depth the most commonly abused prescription drugs to include opioids,
anxiolytics, stimulants and sedative/hypnotics. Additionally we will
discuss signs of prescription medication abuse, short/long term effects of
abuse, intervention strategies and treatment.
