Pathways to a Geologic Career: Part 2 - The Interview
Steve Baker, Student Mentor, will discuss the nuances with the
interview process. Get all the trick questions, the secrets of getting
the job and practice your interviewing skills. Come to the AIPG
meeting on May 7, 2015 at 7 PM. Four people will be chosen to be
interviewed in a telephone interview and an office interview.
Everyone will participate in the interview evaluation. The job
opportunity is the same entry level position used at our last
practice session.

Field Trip to Ormat’s geothermal power plants at Steamboat Springs, Nevada
Steamboat Complex
The Steamboat complex, located in Washoe County, Nevada, consists of the six power plants
with a combined generating capacity of 73 MW; Steamboat 2/3, Burdette (Galena 1), Steamboat
Hills, Galena 2, and Galena 3 .Except for Steamboat Hills, which utilizes a single flash system,
all of the projects in the Steamboat complex utilize a binary system. The electricity generated by
the complex is sold to NV Energy under separate long-term power purchase agreements. The
Ormat Steamboat complex is the main source of baseload power for the citizens of Reno,
Nevada.

Cost: Student AIPG Members $15.00, others $30.00. AIPG professional members are
encouraged to attend!
Field trip will leave from the loading dock of the Earth and Physical Sciences Building at6:00
AM, traveling in UC vans. We should be back in Davis by 5:00 PM. Those who wish to travel
on their own need to arrive at Steamboat Springs by 8:45 AM (driving directions available upon
request). We will visit sinter terraces from the former hot springs and tour both a flash
geothermal steam plant and a binary plant. Bring lunch, water and snacks for the day. Long
pants and close-toed shoes required. Hard hats and safety equipment will be provided by
Ormat. No photography of the operating equipment allowed during the tour.
Sign-up deadline is Monday May 4th. Your place on the field trip is reserved once we receive
your non-refundable field trip fee. Make checks payable to UCD AIPG; payment can be made to
either Tim Nelson, AIPG president, or Rob Zierenberg.

AIPG NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP GOES TO A CALIFORNIA STUDENT
One of the AIPG National Scholarship Winners is Christopher H.
Kremer. He is attending Stanford University and he will be receiving
an award from National AIPG, presented by James Jacobs, California
Section President at the May 7th 2015 meeting at UC Davis.
Christopher’s professor is Dr. Dennis Bird. Christopher Kremer is
from Stamford, Connecticut. His interest in data visualization,
conservation, and water resources in the American West led him to
work for the Bill Lane Center.
The award consists of a $1,000 AIPG scholarship based on the
applicant’s essay and academic record (along with the recommendation
of his or her academic advisor, Dr. Dennis Bird).
