Stanton, Rabbi Micah Becker-Klein, and accordionist David Gesterak. Enjoy
performances by the AKSE dance group, Klezmer Band, Choir, and Choral Group,
and by dancers from the Albert Einstein Academy.

Below are the remarks I delivered at the Delaware
Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day)
ceremony on April 16.
The Hebrew word for history is “Historia.”
Obviously, this is an English word that has been
Hebraized. But this begs the question: why is there
no Hebrew word for history?
Rabbi Jonathan Sachs observes that the Torah
speaks in terms of memory not history. We are not
commanded to keep a historical record of the past;
rather we are commanded to remember it. This
sounds like a matter of mere semantics, but it is not.
History is “his story;” it recalls events that affected
others. But our past is embedded in our memory; it
is our story.
We gather here today to ensure that the
Holocaust is not treated as mere history but as
memory. Why? To remind ourselves that history
can repeat itself, if we treat the past as somebody
else’s story instead of our own. If you were asked a
few years ago if you thought another Holocaust was
possible, you very well may have said no. If you
were asked that same question today, you may very
well have to stop and think about it due to the rapid
increase of anti-Semitism around the world and
rising threats that confront the Jewish state.
Rabbi Jakobovits observes that, when we are
told in the Torah that G-d remembers someone, it
denotes that we will take future action on their
behalf. Our memory of the Holocaust must inspire
us to act now and in the future. We remember in
order to ensure that “never again” is not just a
slogan.

Rabbi Saks is pictured with just some of the hundreds of shoes that have NOT gone into our
local landfill. These shoes will be recycled to those in need in communities throughout the
country and the world. Please support this effort by bringing your no longer used shoes to shul.
AKSE receives a small donation for every container we ship for distribution to those in need. So

Dear AKSE Congregant: The AKSE Board of Governors and I want to make sure that there is nothing in the way
of your enjoyment and participation in all that AKSE has to offer. (The intent is not to wrestle here with
religious or philosophical issues—we welcome those concerns but there are other venues in which to pursue
those questions) .
Rather we are reaching out to congregants to identify ways our AKSE community can do more and better to
meet your everyday needs.
● Are transportation issues preventing you from attending synagogue events? We may be able to
resolve that problem. There are members who might be able to provide transportation. Please call the office at
302 762 2705 or email [email protected] and explain your situation and or transportation need. We will try and
line up someone to help. This is not envisioned as a short notice or immediate problem solution, but rather a
foreseen situation, where with phone calls and some planning a solution might be possible. Please let us know if
we can help.
● Kesher committee—Do you know this exists? The Kesher Committee consists of AKSE members
who willingly give of their time to help other members in need. If an AKSE member needs meals prepared, a ride
to an appointment, an errand done, or just a friendly visit, those on the committee are there to help. Debra

WHAT'S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN?
I was enjoying my favorite police television show, The Blue Bloods, and a word
inspired me to find something familiar, but a bit different. Tom Seleck called a dish he
did not want to taste because it was "Cheffy". He said it was his description for food
that should not be changed because it works the way it was meant to be eaten. I think
lox and bagels should never be changed, since that is one of my favorite
sandwiches. But, this evening I made it "Cheffy". For Shavuot it might be nice to have a refreshing
salad that is veggie packed and makes a change on a brunch classic. This recipe was a winner! We
really enjoyed it. Hope you will, too.
Bagel & Lox Rigatoni Salad
8 ounces rigatoni pasta
9 ounces green beans, blanched *
1 bagel cut into pieces (little round slices are nice)
1/2 cup white balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/3 cup olive oil
1 red onion, finely copped
1/2 cup drained capers
2 cups chopped romaine lettuce
8 ounces mozzarella cheese, sliced in quarters or bite size balls
6 to 8 ounces smoked salmon (lox), chopped
Cook pasta and drain.
* I cooked green beans until done, as I do not like them crispy.
Toss bagel pieces with 1 Tablespoon olive oil and transfer to a baking pan.
Bake in a 400 degree oven for 8 minutes. Cool and set aside.
I used an everything bagel for the extra flavors and it was perfect.
Whisk vinegar, mustard and 1/3 tsp kosher salt in saucepan. Whisk in 1/2 cup olive oil. Heat over
medium heat until just warm, whisking constantly. Remove and stir in onion and capers. (I did not use
capers!)
Place pasta mixture, lettuce, mozzarella, salmon and bagel pieces in a large bowl. Add vinegar,
mixture; gently toss to combine. Top with cracked black pepper, if desired. Makes 6 servings.
I have Tom Seleck to thank for daring me to make a change for something different and
delicious. This could be our new pasta salad favorite.
