Celebrating FAITH, LIFE and LOVE in COMMUNITY. 29th March 2015 - Year B PALM SUNDAY of the PASSION of the LORD ALL HALLOWS’ PARISH CHURCH 2 Halley Street FIVE DOCK 2046 Parish Priest: Fr Greg McGregor Associate Pastors: Fr Salas Muttathukattil MSFS Secretary: Elena Di Perna Presbytery: Monday: Closed Tues - Fri: 8.30am - 3.30pm Dear Parishioners, 1. The Small Things and the Great King In the Gospel, Jesus is acclaimed as King of Israel by a great crowd of people as he rides to Jerusalem on a donkey. It is a great triumphal parade, a high point of the local fame and popular success for Jesus. But I want to ask about the donkey. It’s not Jesus’ donkey. How did he get it? The Gospel says he sent his disciples to a neighboring village to untie it and take it away. But why would anyone let those men simply make off with somebody else’s donkey? As far as that goes, how did Jesus even know that donkey was there? Closed for lunch 12.30-1.30 pm Phone: 9713 7960 Fax: 9713 5172 Here’s one possible answer. The Gospel says that Jesus was near Bethany when he sent his disciples to get the donkey. So maybe that Email: donkey was in Bethany. Bethany is the home of Martha and Mary and [email protected] Lazarus. Like the donkey, which is a humble beast, Martha, Mary, and Web: www.allhallows.org.au Lazarus are small and ordinary people. Nobody would acclaim them in great parades. But they are nonetheless the particular friends of Jesus. All Hallows’ Parish School Maybe the donkey belongs to them or to their friends. Maybe Jesus Principal: Mrs Helen Elliott knows exactly where that donkey is because he has seen it when he was visiting Mary and Martha and Lazarus. Maybe the villagers are so Phone: 9713 4469 Fax: 9712 5184 ready to let the disciples of Jesus take the donkey because they know Email: and trust Jesus. [email protected] Web: www.ahpsfivedock.catholic.edu.au Sacramental Life Eucharist: Saturday - 9.00am & 5.30pm Vigil Sunday - 8.30am Sunday - 10am Children’s Liturgy Sunday - 6.00pm Youth Mass Monday - 9.00am Tues - Wed - 8.00am Thurs - Fri - 9.00am Lauds (morning prayer) is prayed 20 minutes before morning mass daily. All Welcome. Reconciliation: Saturday 9.30 - 10am & 4.45 - 5.15pm Anointing: First Friday of the month at 9am mass. (except January). Sick Calls: Any time - day/night. Funeral Masses: In co-operation with Funeral Directors. Exposition: Third Thursday of every month after Mass. On this way of reading the story, with the people shouting and acclaiming him King, Jesus rides into Jerusalem on the small beast which comes from the village of his particular friends, two ordinary women and their equally ordinary brother. And here’s the sequel. The crowd that acclaims Jesus so greatly is next seen shouting for his crucifixion. That’s how much fame and popular success are worth. And here’s what particular friendship with the Lord is worth. When Jesus ascends to God the Father do you know what place he chooses as the site for his ascension? It is Bethany (Luke 24:50), where his friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus live. And so in his royal procession, on that little donkey, our Lord shows us what is truly worth caring about, the small things, the particular things so dear to us and to our great King. 2. Project Compassion During this final week of Lent I invite you to support this year’s Project Compassion Appeal through envelope and boxes which are available in the gathering space. This year Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion campaign is centered on the theme “Food for Life.” This theme ties in with Caritas internationals global initiative to end hunger by 2025, an initiative strongly supported by Pope Francis. 3. Anointing Mass The April Mass for the Healing of the Sick will be held on Friday 10th April at the 9am Mass. 4. Good Friday Collection The annual collection for the support of the church in the Holy Land takes place in Good Friday. This collection promotes the missionary work of the Church in the Holy Land by providing welfare assistance to local Christians in areas such as health, education, employment and housing. Parishes, schools, orphanages and medical center throughout the Holy Land also rely on assistance from the Good Friday collection. The collection is also used to maintain 74 churches and shrines associated with the life of Jesus. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Please also pray that peace and harmony will become a reality in the birthplace of Jesus, the ‘Prince of Peace.’ FROM OUR FAMILY EDUCATOR Thank you to all who are continuing their generous donations for our Toiletry Runs.
