Share Your Stories:
Matt Gaskin shares his story as
he prepares to embark on a new
chapter in his life.
When I moved to Toronto seven years ago
I was looking to get back into singing after
having taken a break from it for a few years.
A friend who was a seasoned Toronto concertgoer recommended the Amadeus Choir so I
took myself off to the open auditions. Feeling
somewhat apprehensive – it had been awhile
and I was a little rusty – I got through the
audition and was welcomed into the choir.
In my first year I made friendships that
would last a lifetime and was reminded
how nourishing it was to make music with
people. I was introduced to the Canadian
choral scene, which boasts some formidable
players. We performed works by Christos
Hatzis, Ruth Watson Henderson, and Eleanor
Daley. I remember that during a rehearsal of
Voices of Earth there was a discrepancy in
the score. Lydia considered the problem for
a minute before saying “let’s ask Ruth!” and
phoning her on the spot. It’s always a special
moment watching a conductor and composer
collaborate to bring a piece of music to life.
I thought to myself, I’m in the right place. This
is where the music gets made.
Front of House volunteers at Of Heart and
Tide: The Gift of Water, April 11, 2015.
I wasn’t wrong. Lydia brings exemplary
musicianship to the table and is a champion
of Canadian composers and of new work.
The care she takes with new work, be it
from an established composer or a young
entrant in the choir’s Seasonal Song-Writing
Competition, is simply inspiring. It inspired
me to go back to school and get my degree in
composition. During my studies Lydia provided
invaluable encouragement and mentorship.
At the end of this season I’ll be leaving
Toronto, but I’ll always treasure my time with
the Amadeus Choir for the friendships made
and the joy of music we made together.
We’d love to hear your stories. Please mail or
email your thoughts about what the Amadeus
Choir does for you.

This June we will be recording our new CD,
Voices of Earth. The CD will include Voices
of Earth by Ruth Watson Henderson and Of Heart and Tide by Sid
Robinovitch, as well as works by Eleanor Daley and Imant Raminsh.
The Amadeus Choir relies on the efforts of
an incredible family of volunteers; we could
not accomplish what we do without their
support, dedication and enthusiasm. We
welcome you to join our warm and caring
volunteer community. The opportunities to
help are diverse, and range from working to
ensure our concerts run smoothly and our
events are successful, to providing financial
and legal advice, developing marketing
strategies, and fundraising in
the community. For more information,
please contact us at 416-446-0188 or

Your tax-deductible donation will help us ensure that the
beautiful and captivating works of these treasured Canadian
composers are accessible forever. Please consider making
