Abstract:
The aim of the dissertation is to give an inferentialist theory of meaning for
quantifiers and modal expressions. The account of second-order quantification
offered is acceptable for nominalists. The results of the theory of meaning
given are applied to areas in metaphysics. In particular, the controversy over
necessitism the work of Timothy Williamson, and Gödel’s ontological argument
are explored. .
