Brentwood and District Craft
Society
The aim of the society is to promote arts and
crafts and to assist and encourage all
craftsmen and women in the Brentwood area.
The society also organises craft fairs for
members and invited craftworkers. A directory
is available to craft fair organisers. A few

Brentwood Art Society
The Art Society holds painting sessions on
Monday and Thursday evenings. On Mondays,
we have a tutor and follow a course with a
theme. On Thursdays, we work from a model

Brentwood Arts Council
Brentwood Arts Council was formed in 1971 to
foster and promote artistic and cultural
activities in the Brentwood Borough. It acts as
a co-ordinating body between the many arts
groups in the area and the local authority.
Membership represents all branches of the arts
- music, drama, visual arts, poetry, etc - and a
large number of associate members, whose
individual support is much valued.
Brentwood Arts Council offers a variety of
services to members. Stage lighting, orchestral
music stands, sound equipment, photographs
and arts display stands are available for hire at
reasonable cost.

Brentwood Floral Art Club
We watch a demonstrator each month who
makes six arrangements, which are raffled at
the end of the meeting. We are a friendly club
and have stalls selling plants and flower

Doddinghurst Art Society

exhibition and a bi-annual summer exhibition
in June (a weekend of art) for various groups.

Hutton Floral Art Club
We meet once a month. We sit and watch
professional demonstrators arranging 6/7
beautiful flower arrangements giving expert
knowledge and advice on all aspects of flower
arranging. The arrangements are raffled at the

Ingatestone and District
Camera Club
Our emphasis is on teaching club members
how to use their photographic equipment.
Practical evenings are encouraged with
members asking their own questions and
finding solutions to the ever-increasing digital
revolution. The club has the usual
competitions, local exhibitions, lectures from
visiting speakers and photoshoots in the local
area. Digital projection of images is used for
club competitions and member evenings.

Shenfield Floral Art Club
Each month, members and their guests come
along for an evening of wonderful flower

Wednesday Evening Painters
We are a friendly group who enjoy painting in
a well-lit studio classroom, with no tuition. We
do our own thing, such as watercolours,
acrylics, pastels, etc. with our own materials.

We are a mixed group with different levels of
experience. We have two regular tutors and,

primary sources or photographs. Most of our

Blackmore Folk Club
Blackmore Folk Club first met in 1964, upstairs
in the Bull public house in Church Street,
Blackmore. Forty years later, we’re still at the
same pub, although these days we meet in the
“Bicycle Shop” off the main bar.
The Club is run as what is known in Folk circles
as a “singaround”, which means that although
we do sometimes book guest artists, most of
the time those who are singing or playing do
so for no fee, but merely for the pleasure of
making music and singing songs to and with
others. However, many of those taking part
are, or have been, professional musicians, and
there are also a number of highly talented
amateurs participating. No two sessions are
the same, except in one respect - everyone
who attends is made welcome, whether they
are joining in as a singer or musician, or just
there as audience.

Blackmore Players
Founded forty years ago, we present a
minimum of three productions per year,
usually a pantomime in January and a play
and musical production in May and October.
We welcome new members, especially men
who can help either on or backstage or with
sound and lighting.

Brentwood Brass
Brentwood Brass is a concert brass ensemle. It
comprises adult brass musicians of all ages
and expertise, but has a number of
‘comeback’ players who have returned to
brass after various periods of absence. Most of
its concert appearances are in aid of local
charities and worthy causes. The musical
standard is progressive and to the highest level
that a band can achieve. However, rehearsals
are lively and relaxed. The band is unable to
teach beginners but can give support and
encouragement to players of all abilities.

Brentwood Choral Society
A small but dedicated choir under the
directorship of Nicholas Sherwood. We give
public performances three or four times a year,
either on our own or with other local choirs.
The repertoire is mainly classical, but never
dull, and at Christmas we perform carols at
locations within the Borough. We are a
sociable and friendly choir and welcome new
members. There is no audition. Our rehearsals
are relaxed and enjoyable and we aim to
reach a good standard and go home pleased
with our two hours’ singing.

Brentwood orchestras for
young musicians Brentwood Beginner Strings
Brentwood Beginner Strings is a fun,
elementary introduction to the skills and
disciplines of orchestral playing. The orchestra
is for beginner players on all orchestral string
instruments up to 11 years old. They can join
as soon as they understand basic rhythms and
have enough control to play on open strings
reliably.
Beginner Strings meet on Sundays at the

Brentwood Junior String
Orchestra
The BJSO gives young string players (7-13
years) an opportunity to enjoy the pleasures
and disciplines of orchestral playing. With
reasonable advance notice, the orchestra are
happy to perform at community events.
Meetings are held on Fridays, during termtime, between 4.45pm-6pm at Ursuline High
School, Queens Road, Brentwood.
BJSO is for young string players between the
ages of 7 and 12 years who have reached at
least Grade 2 standard (double bass - Grade
1).
Junior Strings meet on Fridays at the
Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School.

Brentwood Junior Wind Band
Brentwood Junior Wind Band is a fun
introduction to ensemble playing for wind
players and is also a training ground for
youngsters who would eventually like to join
the Phoenix Flames and the Phoenix Youth
Orchestra. At present, members’ ages range
from 9 to 14. Standard largely depends on the
instrument but ideally they should have
reached Grade 2, although that need not be
the case especially with rarer instruments, and
anyone who is enthusiastic should apply!
BJWB’s conductor is Mike Applewhite, the
popular, local musician who is well known for
his lively approach to music.

Phoenix Flames
Initially created for the older members of BJSO
who are not quite ready to go into the Phoenix
Youth Orchestra, this intermediate orchestra is
open to all string players from year 7 upwards
(not only those who have been in BJSO).
“Flames” will also be taking a small number of
woodwind players of about Grade 4 standard.
The main conductor is Liz Hosford, a
professional double bass player and also a
skilled pianist and flautist, who has plenty of
energy and enthusiasm and exactly the right
approach for a trainee youth orchestra!
The new orchestra rehearses on nine Friday
evenings of the term from 4.45pm-6.30pm at
Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School. In
addition, there is one Sunday workshop a term
alongside the Youth Orchestra.

Phoenix Youth Orchestra
The Phoenix Youth Orchestra is Brentwood’s
youth orchestra. Formed in September 2000,
its members are young musicians of secondary
school age who live in Brentwood and its
surrounding areas. The orchestra has two
lively conductors: Robert Bailey for their main
conductor and the assistant conductor is the
popular local musician, Mike Applewhite.
“Phoenix” rehearses at the Brentwood Ursuline
High School on Friday evenings with one
additional all day Sunday rehearsal a term
when they are joined by an excellent team of
section tutors all of whom are experienced
orchestral players. Phoenix Youth Orchestra is
an extremely sociable orchestra, playing a
variety of exciting music in a relaxed and
friendly atmosphere.

A listening club where professional artistes give

Company
Brentwood Shakespeare Company presents an
annual production of a play by Shakespeare at
Brentwood Theatre, usually in late April. Our
aim is to include people from all walks of life
and in all types of activity, from acting to
property construction, from sound to
programme selling, to achieve a professional
standard production that brings Shakespeare
to the community in a living, relevant way.

Howard Wallace Chorale
Making friends, making music - is the slogan

also takes part in village activities (for example,
horticultural shows, Victorian Christmas
evenings). Shows are usually rehearsed on two
or three nights per week for 10 -12 weeks prior
to performances. In addition to occasional
social evenings or theatre visits, periodic
meetings are held to discuss club business,
further productions and to hold auditions. The
club is happy to welcome new members not
only as actors but to assist with numerous
back-stage jobs required during productions.

pantomime. We organise social and
fundraising events such as quiz nights, parties,

The Parish Church of Saint Thomas of
Canterbury, Brentwood, maintains six groups
totalling over 100 singers and musicians.
There are four choirs (the Parish Choir of Boys

The National Women’s Register was set up in
1960 by one woman who had the idea that

1987 storms in the two parks, has a
permanent exhibition, a shop selling gifts and
refreshments, and a schools' room. Both the
exhibition and schools' room are available to
hire.
Fishing is available if a day ticket is purchased.
Horse riding is allowed, but you must keep to
the areas marked with a blue arrow.

largest of the Essex County Council country
parks. Parkland has been established here for
