Ti6Al4V is the most commonly used titanium alloy. It has a chemical composition of 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, 0.25% (maximum) iron, 0.2% (maximum) oxygen, and the remainder titanium. It is significantly stronger than commercially pure titanium while having the same stiffness and thermal properties. This grade is an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and weld and fabric ability. This alpha-beta alloy is the workhorse alloy of the titanium industry. Its uses vary in many aerospace airframe and engine components. C fiber – C matrix Composites are a type of ceramic matrix composites. They use carbon fibers in carbon matrix. They have the ability to withstand very high temperatures and have low creep at high temperatures, low density, good tensile and compressive strength, high fatigue resistance, high thermal conductivity and high coefficient of friction. The major applications of CC Composites are space shuttle nose cones, aircraft brakes, mechanical fasteners etc. The Internee at RCMA (Materials), DRDO, Hyderabad will work on upgrading the existing C fiber – C matrix Composites and Ti6Al4V alloys. Thus as a test to appreciate the internee's motivation in this field, the problem statement would require the student to present a 10 minutes presentation on “Aircraft Materials” in front of a panel of judges. The presentation should comprise of the following points about C fiber – C matrix Composites and Ti6Al4V alloys: 1. 2. 3. 4. Introduction Mechanical and Thermal Properties Production/Fabrication Techniques Applications in aircrafts The participants are expected to carry out extensive literature survey on the given materials. Innovative ideas to improve properties of materials will be appreciated.
