All Grade 10 students will study: • • • • • • • English (Applied or Academic) Math (Applied or Academic) Science (Applied or Academic) Canadian History (Applied or Academic) Civics .5 credit (Open) Career Studies .5 credit (Open) Plus 3 Elective courses All Grade 11 students will study: • English: Workplace, College or University level • Math: Workplace – Math for Everyday Life College – Foundations for College Math M – Apprenticeships/College/University U – Prerequisite for grade 12U courses • Plus 6 Electives courses All Grade 12 students will study: • English: Workplace, College or University level – All University & College Degree Programs require ENG 4U – College Diploma Programs & Apprenticeships require ENG 4C or 4U. • Plus 5 or more Elective courses Year 5 Students • If returning for 1 semester only, students must take a minimum of 3 credits. • If only 1 or 2 credits are needed to graduate consider: - Gary Allan High School – Self Reliant - Summer School - Night School - Online Options • Implementation of 34 Credit Cap – September 2013. Reaching Ahead • If you intend to reach ahead you must choose the course(s) now. • We will honour all reach ahead selections completed this February for next year. • We cannot guarantee reach ahead timetable changes in September or February of next year. Prerequisites & Subject Promotion • Most grade 12 courses require a grade 11 prerequisite course. Course descriptions and prerequisites are viewable on our school website. • Students may not move forward in a compulsory credit unless they are successful in the previous grade and level of that compulsory subject. • Summer School and Night School are available to redo a course, improve a grade or reach ahead. • Students can retake a failed course in semester 1 of the next year. Selecting the Appropriate Level Applied or Academic? Applied leads directly to: • Work • Apprenticeships • College Diploma Programs Academic leads directly to: • Work, Apprenticeships, College Diploma Programs • College Degree Programs • University Programs Selecting for a specific Pathway • All University and College Degree Programs require 6 grade 12 U or M level courses. Co-op is not a U or M level. • College Diploma Programs require C, U or M level courses. Co-op is looked upon favourably. • Apprenticeships require C or U level courses. Math is important and co-op is looked upon favourably. Information & Communication Technology SHSM • Gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Communications and IT sectors while still in high school. • The SHSM Program has a number of required components designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing all 4 destinations. The site address is on the Option Sheet. • Once courses are entered, be sure to print off a Verification Sheet and double check for accuracy. Online Course Selection Process • Once the Verification Sheet is completed, the student and parent/guardian must sign it. • Hand in the signed Verification Sheet to the Semester 2, Period 1 teacher by Friday, February 20th. • If you do not have a Semester 2, Period 1 class, hand the sheet into Student Services. myBlueprint.ca/halton/ Unsure what courses to Select? Full disclosure date is April 30th 2015. • If you drop afterwards your mark will show on your transcript. Questions?
