Aquinas SOUL Club Honored
In 1968, a new organization
was created for the freshman class at Aquinas called
S.O.U.L. Club (Seeking Others Under Love) The club
helped to clean the school,
organize class projects and
gave a roller skating party
for the freshman class.
Their moderator was Sister
Dorothy. Since then, the
group has evolved into a
service organization for all
high school members to belong to that helps needy
organizations both near and
far. This group has raised
funds and provided volunteer assistance for 46 years
and in January at the Annual Butler County Chamber of Commerce Banquet
was honored for this service as the Community Service Organization of the
Year. The award was accepted by this year’s president, Julia Daro and last
Year’s president, Brice Hilfiker. Mrs. Anna Nolan and
Mr. Allen Covault have
served as moderators for
the past several years.
Other moderators have
included Sr. Dorothy Rolf,
Carm Fiala ’68 and Sr.
Jeanette Rerucha ‘77.
Some of the traditional
fundraisers that continue
with SOUL Club are the
SOUL Club Carnival and
Valentine Cookie Sales.
This year, the Carnival
made $1,150.00.
The
cookie sales profited over
$900.00 with over 1200
cookies being made. The
SOUL Club also helps with

A Message from the
Superintendent
Dear Alumni,
Greetings from Aquinas Catholic
Schools! I hope that this Alumni Newsletter finds you and your family well and
flourishing.
As it was when you were students
here, we are truly blessed at Aquinas and
St. Mary’s Catholic that we have tremendously strong teachers in our schools.
They work very hard, and they have a
strong desire to help each student learn
to the best of their ability. Not only do
they strive to teach all of their subjects
well, they also want to incorporate the
Catholic faith in all that they say and
do, inside and outside of the classroom.
That is why it seems oxymoronic that
you would have Catholic school teachers
not teaching the true Catholic faith or
personally adhering to Catholic morals.
We don’t have that at Aquinas or any of
our Diocese of Lincoln Catholic schools.
Unfortunately however, that is not the
case everywhere in the country.
Recently the Archdiocese of San Francisco
From
announced that explanations of Catholic
teaching would be added to the faculty
and staff handbooks for its four high
schools. It also proposed new morals
clauses for teacher contracts that would
define teachers as having a ministerial
role. The archdiocese said the changes to
the handbook and teacher contract did
not contain anything new but were
intended to “clarify existing expectations
that Catholic teachers in their professional and public lives uphold Catholic
teaching.” The archbishop wants his
teachers to be clear in their teaching of
the faith with no ambiguity and no
apologies, especially on pro-life and
marriage issues.
While we would regard this as the
norm, it is causing an uproar in California. Many pro-abortion advocates and
other leftist politicians are fuming that
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has the
“gall” to remind his teachers that they
teach and strive to live a Catholic moral
life. While Catholic school teachers do
not necessarily have to be Catholic
themselves, they are still expected under
contract to respect and uphold Catholic
doctrine, even if they are not teaching
theology. Archbishop Cordileone gave a
great rebuttal to his critics in the political arena, when he asked them if they
would hire political advisors from the
opposing party! If a school is Catholic,
does it not make sense to have Catholic
doctrines and Catholic sensibilities communicated, and communicated clearly?
Aquinas and St. Mary’s Catholic
teachers have similar wording in their
contract. It states that if there is a
“contradiction or rejection, by word and
action of doctrines, laws or norms of the
Catholic Church”, “the employer may
immediately terminate this contract.”
While we hope this would never be the
case, the language is there in the contract to protect the schools, but ultimately, to protect our students from being
exposed to things that are contrary to
the Catholic faith.
Join us in praying for Archbishop
Cordileone and his Catholic schools and
teachers. The most important people in
all of the discussion are the students.
They have a distinct “right”, as do all
Catholics, to hear, know, and assimilate
the truths of our faith in all of their
integrity.
On this past March 18th, KVSS, Spirit
Catholic Radio, came to Aquinas to
broadcast their morning show live.
Many priests, religious sisters, faculty
and staff, and students were interviewed live on the radio! It was so
impressive to hear the members of our
school share the great things about
Aquinas and how it has shaped and
impacted their Catholic faith and
relationship with Christ. God has
certainly blessed us. Thank you for
your spiritual and financial support of
Aquinas and St. Mary’s Catholic Schools.

Dear Alumni,
As adults, we often talk
about how busy we are and
fast-paced our schedules get.
As I sit down to write this
letter, Mr. McMahon comes
over the intercom to remind the students of everything that is going on today.
We have our external team
visit today to go over the
five year improvement plan,
the NHS is hosting a blood
mobile in the gym starting at
noon, the drama students
are reminded that tonight’s
musical practice will be in
full makeup in preparation
for the play this weekend,
tracksters are to remember
to be prepared for the track
meet tomorrow that was
postponed from yesterday
and band students are sup-
posed to be ready to go over
their music for District Music
Contest. As you well remember, students in a smaller
school have the opportunity
to “do it all” if they want.
There are so many choices of
activities for them to participate in.
It was the same when you
were in high school. The
opportunities for growth in
athletics, fine arts, clubs and
spiritual groups help to make
Aquinas students and eventually alumni well rounded individuals who excel in secondary education, jobs and civic
life. Check out the alumni
news and notes on page 11
and see what some of your
fellow alumni are up to since
they graduated. These news
highlights are gathered from
family, alumni and The Banner Press. Read the SOUL
Club article and remember
the time you spent as a
SOUL Club member and
think about how you do
service for others. Even
the obituaries on pages 8
and 9 show how our alumni have shared their gifts,
talents and faith that they
developed at their Catholic
school with those around
them.
I was also reminded at a
meeting how important
comments and ideas from
alumni are when it comes
to continuing to improve
the curriculum we offer
here at Aquinas.
Mr.
McMahon loves to hear
from alumni in regards to
whether or not they were
well prepared for their
college course work. If
you are currently in college
and you are being asked to
write papers in a new format, approach a math
problem in a new way or
use technology that you
are unfamiliar with, please
let Aquinas know so that
we can continue to prepare our students in the
best way possible.

A Gift That Keeps On Giving
If you get an Annual Development
Report for Aquinas and St. Mary’s,
then you know about the Endowment Fund that was created in 1981
to help insure the future of our
schools. What you might not know
is that within the Endowment Fund,
are several Named Funds that have
been created by families for themselves or their loved ones. Some of
these Named Funds are part of the
general Endowment and others are
for specific areas such as scholarships or the Guardian Angel Fund.
This past winter, we had an alumnus approach us because she was
interested in creating a Named
Fund in memory of her parents.
She felt blessed that her parents
thought that it was important that
she and all of her 11 siblings attend
Catholic schools. Because of that,
she decided to create a named fund
in their memory that would benefit
Aquinas in some way. After discussing various options, she decided
that her parents Named Fund
would benefit the library which is
an area of the school used by all
Aquinas students. Beginning with
the 2015-16 school year, the Aquinas library will receive a distribution
from the interest on that fund to
help with purchasing books, renewing magazine subscriptions, and updating library equipment. This will
be a gift that is perpetual and benefit Aquinas students for years to
come.
We are blessed to have alumni who
remember and support our school
in this way. A Named Fund is created with a minimum starting gift of
$10,000 which insures about a
$500.00 per year distribution to the
school. We have a Named Fund
that benefits the Guardian Angel
Tuition Fund that was created by
Aquinas alumni in memory of their
parents and several scholarship
funds that were created by parents
for deceased Alumni. If you would

Aquinas Alumni Ladies Play Volleyball!
Seven teams of Lady Monarch Alumni gathered on Thanksgiving weekend for a volleyball tournament at Aquinas. The ladies had a great time and also helped to raise money for both the
alumni association scholarships and the Aquinas volleyball program. This every other year
event was organized by Dawn Demuth Bohuslavsky, Katie Cech Smith and .

In memory of...
Louis J.
Humlicek died
September 29,
2014, and was
born October 1,
1929, on the family farm
north of Abie, Nebraska, to
Anton G. and Rose (Ostry)
Humlicek. He graduated in
1947 from Assumption
Catholic High School in
Dwight, Nebraska. Louis
farmed in the Abie area his
entire life. He was a member
of S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic
Church in Abie, the Fraternal
Order of Eagles, the National
Farmers Organization
(N.F.O.) and the Abie Volunteer Fire Department. He
enjoyed dancing, playing
cards, listening to polka music, family get-togethers and
visiting with friends and
neighbors.
Evelyn (Kadavy) Shonka
passed away Feb 12, 2013, in
Colorado Springs, Colorado.
After graduating from
Dwight Assumption high
school in 1950, she married
Daniel John Shonka. They
relocated to Colorado
Springs where they ran several businesses. Evelyn also
enjoyed working several
different jobs, with her favorite being in the Human
Resources Department of
Current LooArt. Evelyn was
a wonderful mother to two
children, a loving wife and a
great friend to many. She
loved her Colorado mountains and her Broncos. Evelyn is now at peace with God.
She is happily reunited with
Dan (DA ‘41)who passed
away 23 years earlier and
their many children who
didn’t survive full term pregnancy. Evelyn is survived by
her children, two sisters ,
one sister-in-law and many
nieces and nephews.
Pauline Ann
(Cermak) Tesina
was born October
19, 1940, in David
City, Nebraska, the
daughter of Theodore Carl and Marie Catherine
(Peters) Cermak and passed
away at her home in Bee,
Nebraska, on October 5, 2014,
at the age of 73 years, 11
months, 16 days. Polly attended St. Mary’s Grade School
and was a 1959 graduate of
St. Mary’s High School. She
attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln and
graduated as an LPN. On February 6, 1960, Polly was united in marriage to Emil Alois
Tesina in David City. Their
marriage was blessed with
five children—Karen, Michael, Suzanne, Kathleen and
Patrick. The family resided in
Dwight until 1976 when they
moved to Bee. Polly was employed with Sundermann
Home and Tabitha Home
Health as an LPN. She was an
active member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Bee
where she helped with the
organization and preparation
of the funeral meals.
Louis J. "Lou" Tomcak died
Oct 16, 2014. He was a 1946
graduate of Marietta. Louis
was preceded in death by his
grandson. Survived by his
wife of 63 years, Leola
Tomcak; children, grandchildren, great grandchildren,
and nieces; nephews;. He was
a 40-year member of IBEW
Local #22.
Mary Catherine
Homan Schupbach,
90, of Columbus,
died Sunday, July 6,
2014, at the Columbus Community
Hospital. Mary was born May
16, 1924, to Benjamin H. and
Katherine L. (Steiner) Homan
in Butler County. She attended elementary school and
graduated from Marietta
High School in 1942. She
was united in marriage to
Howard J. Ebel on January
13, 1949, in Bellwood, and to
this union two children were
born. She was united in marriage to Clarence H. Schupbach on May 10, 1955, in
Bellwood. Mary was a homemaker for her family and
later worked at several jobs.
She retired from Becton
Dickinson in Columbus. She
enjoyed quilting, sewing,
gardening, playing cards, and
gathering with family and
friends for birthday and holiday celebrations. She was a
longtime member of St. Isidore Parish and the Christian
Mothers.
Max R. Brodersen, age 71,
died at the
Community
Hospital in
McCook,
Nebraska, on
Friday, January 16,
2015. He was
born in Harlan, Iowa, on February 25, 1943, to Hans Henry
and
Eleanor
(Frederickson) Brodersen.
He attended school in Harlan
and graduated from Harlan
High School in 1961. He
went on to study at Morningside College in Iowa graduating in 1965, with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He
served a few years in the Air
National Guard in Sioux City,
Iowa, and was an offensive
lineman (center) for the semi
-pro Omaha Mustangs in the
late 1960’s.
Max took his first teaching
and coaching job at Aquinas
High School in David City,
Nebraska, teaching and
coaching football until
1970. On July 12, 1969, he
was united in marriage to
Carol Hiller ’65 in Bellwood,
NE at St. Peter's Catholic
Church. In 1970, Max moved
to McCook, where he accepted a position at McCook
Community College to teach
and coach the football team. He
later became the Athletic Director for the college, a position he
held until 1974. Max then went
to work for the First National
Bank of McCook. It was during
this time that Max also worked
as the play-by-play announcer
for McCook Bison football and
basketball games on KICX radio.
After suffering from a heart
attack in 1993, Max chose to
leave his job with the bank and
went to work for Kugler Oil
Company until 2009 when he
retired.
Max was well known by many
of his peers and friends from
across the state. Max had a passion for sports, as well as a love
for hunting waterfowl and playing golf. He enjoyed spending
time with his grandchildren and
following their many activities.
Max was a member of the St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, held
many offices and chairs in the
McCook Elks Lodge and the
United Way Campaign of
McCook.
David Joseph Spatz,
66, of Lincoln, Neb.,
passed away on January 22, 2015, following a courageous
battle with pancreatic cancer. David was
a 1966 graduate of Aquinas.
He is a member of The Cathedral of The Risen Christ Catholic
Church, Member of the Nebraska Army National Guard for 38
years, Budget Analyst for the
State of Nebraska for 40 years,
Member of Dwight American
Legion, Board member for Spirit of America Federal Credit
Union, Treasurer of Southwood
Association for 43 years, and an
avid farm toy collector.
Doll Hamata, 67, of Schuyler,
died Monday, January
26, 2015, at the Nebraska Heart Institute
in Lincoln. Doll was
born February 9,
1947, in Columbus,
Nebraska to Harry and Dorothy
(Legler) Morbach. She graduated from Aquinas High

School in 1965. On February 8, 1969, she married
Gerald
Hamata
at
Presentation
Catholic
Church, Bellwood.
They
lived in Schuyler and Doll
was a hairdresser for 40
years at Doris Ann's Beauty
Shop and styled hair for area
funeral homes. She was a
member
of
Divine
Mercy Parish, St. Mary's
Catholic Church and had
served on the board of the
Schuyler
Housing
Authority. She was a former
Brownie Leader, coached
softball and taught CCD. Doll
was
well
known
for her baking of birthday
and wedding cakes for many
years.
John Joseph Kosch died of a
heart attack on
January
24,
2015, at his
home in Loveland,
Colorado. He
was born in May
of 1928 on a farm
near Bellwood, NE to Herman and Loretta Kosch. John
graduated from Marietta
High School in 1946 and
attended St. John’s University
in Minnesota. In June of 1957
he married E. Jean Klein in
David City, NE. Gregory and
Daniel arrived prior to moving to Columbus in 1960.
While living in Columbus,
Laura Rose joined the family.
John farmed and worked in
real estate and auto sales in
Nebraska before moving to
Loveland in 1973, where he
continued in real estate sales.
John received the Korean
Medal of Honor for his service to our county in the U.S.
Army during the Korean Conflict and belonged to the local
VFW. He was a member of St.
John the Evangelist Catholic
Church and sang in the senior choir. He also earned a
4th degree in the Knights of
Columbus. He volunteered at
the Loveland Visitor's Center
and Sculpture shows for 12
years. John loved to dance
and was a wonder-

ful dancer. Big Band and Swing
were the styles of music he
enjoyed
the
most.
Connie A. Sabatka, 71 of Weston, NE, entered into eternal
rest on Monday, November 24,
2014, in Omaha, NE. She was
born October 31, 1943, in David City, NE to Harold and Cecilia (Sauser) Zegers. Connie
graduated from Aquinas High
School in 1962. On August 13,
1966, she was united in marriage to Darrell Sabatka at
Presentation Catholic Church
in Marietta, NE. Connie and
Darrell farmed in rural Weston
for most of their lives.
Connie was a member of St.
John Nepomucene Catholic
Church in Weston. She was an
excellent baker and cook.
Cooking for her family was one
of her favorite hobbies. She
always enjoyed gardening and
canning the produce. Her cats
had a special place in her heart.
She loved spending time with
her family.
Blanche
Koznarek
Buglewicz, a 1941 graduate of
Dwight Assumption, died July 5,
2014.
Blanche
lived
a
long,
healthy
and
blessed life surrounded by her
cherished family and friends.
She will be deeply missed by
those whose lives she touched
with her constant prayers and
her gentle, loving ways.
Joseph J. Yindrick, Sr., 74,
died quietly at home March 14,
2015.
Joe was born
January 22, 1941,
to Alois and Amelia
(Bartunek)
Yindrick of David
City. He attended grade school
near home and graduated from
Marietta High School in
1959. He proudly served in the
US Army and was stationed at
the former Fort Devens in Massachusettes. While on the east
coast, he met the love of his
life, Elizabeth McCarthy. They
were married on September 5,
1964, in Marlborough, MA and
then moved to their farm east
of David City. They proudly
celebrated their 50th anniversary
in
2014.
Joe loved farming and his
vineyard. Most recently he
raised grapes for the Makovicka Winery in Brainard
and tended a large garden.
He worked for Timpte, Inc.
in David City for 27 years
and retired at age 70. He
was an active and talented
musician as a bass player
and vocalist from age 16. He
played over 30 years with
the Bud Comte Orchestra,
the Nebraska Czech Brass
Band and the last few years
with the Bill Andel trio and
sang with the Knights of
Columbus Men’s Choir. His
smooth vocal stylings will
live on in the hearts of all
who
heard
him.
Joe was an active member
of the Assumption Appleton
parish and served as an
acolyte. He was a member
of the Fourth Degree
Knights of Columbus, American Legion Rejda Post #273
and was past member of the
Nebraska Winery and Grape
Growers Association. Joe is
survived by his wife, Elizabeth, children: Michele

(Delaine) Yindrick Jr. of
Lincoln, William(Melissa)
Yindrick of David City, Nicole (James)Sylvester of
David
City
and
Eric

George Stoeckinger , former teacher at Aquinas,
passed away on March 8,
2014, at Nathan Adelson
Hospice in Las
Vegas, NV. He
will be remembered for his
deep and unselfish care for
others and his
outstanding patience in his
physical adversities.
George was born on September 13, 1929, to Philip
and Ethel (McCracken)
Stoeckinger in Lawrence,
9
Nebraska. He attended schools
in Nebraska and Colorado and
received his advanced education at Creighton University
and the Catholic University of
America. George served his
church; taught school; directed
religious education programs
and worked as a probation
counselor. In 1991, he suffered
the first of several strokes and
endured his limited mobility
and loss of speech with amazing character.
George is survived by his wife,
Camille Zmolek Stoeckinger;
his son, Sam; grandchildren,
Matthew and Jorja; and sister,
Phyllis.
Lawrie Jean Zegers Egger, 63,
of David City, Ne, died peacefully Friday March 20, 2015, at
Mory’s Haven in
Columbus, Ne.
Lawrie was born
June 17, 1951, in
David City to Lawrence and Thelma
(Kindler)
Zegers.
She graduated from
Aquinas High School in 1969.
Enjoying life to the fullest,
Lawrie loved to travel and
eventually found herself traveling with a local band, which
she loved to sing with. Her
compassion and love for people lead her into the nursing
field, where she spent the remainder of her working years
caring for residents and supporting
their
families. Whether in her personal

have enjoyed a successful winter/spring
season across the
board.

The Aquinas Wrestling
Team qualified 3 grapplers for the state tourney and these three

team members make it
to finals at districts and
one qualify for state.

of individuals who have shared the good news with the schools that they plan to give a planned gift.
There are no dues to pay or offices to hold with this club. However, twice a year, the school invites the
Heritage Club members in for Mass as a way of saying
“thank you for remembering us and helping us to build up the kingdom of God!”

Stephen Oborny ‘65
attended Radio Engineering Institute upon graduation and
completed in 1967.
At that time he enlisted in the
United States Air Force where
he was stationed in Thailand,
New Mexico, the Phillipines and
Germany. He was honorably
discharged in 1971. He attended UNL in Electrical Engineering
and joined the Nebraska Air National Guard until his retirement
in 2002. The highlight of his Air
Guard career was in October
1997 when he went to the Czech
Republic as an interpreter for
the military and also taught
summer school at the West
Czech University. He has traveled to all 50 states and 32 foreign countries. He and his wife
Marilyn have two children.
Bill Janak ‘00 was recently promoted to IT technical services
manager at Duncan Aviation in
Lincoln. He has been there since
2011. Duncan Aviation is the
largest family owned business
aircraft service provider in the
world.

Jeremy Belsky ‘92 recently completed the coursework to earn
the designation Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy along with
eleven other advisors . Jeremy
works for the foundation office at
Boys Town in Omaha, NE.
Four Aquinas alumni were recently sworn in as Butler County
and David City officials. Their

Master Sergeant Michael Havlovic ’85 was promoted to his
current rank in September, 2014,
while serving as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and
explosive technician with Task
Force Scorpion stationed at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. He
has since returned from his deployment.
Mary Klosterman ‘10,
has been selected as
the newest clinical research assistant by the
National Institute of Health in
Bethesda, Maryland. She will be
working in the Center for Cancer Research on squamous cell cancer.
Steve Sloup ‘72, is now the
executive vice president
chief information officer for
West Gate Bank Center in
Lincoln, NE. Steve is a past
president of Lancaster County CASA,
past chair of the Nebraska Bankers VEBA Board of Trustees, past president of
the Board of Continuum Employees
Assistance in addition to involvement in
other various community organizations.
Marissa DeWispelare ‘13 achieved All
American status once again at the NAIA
Indoor Track Championships in Geneva,
Ohio. She placed sixth in the mile and
fourth in the 4X800 relay.
Two people who you will recognize
from your days at Aquinas have recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with
their spouses. Congratulations to John
and Barb Dehner and Bill and Betty
Kozisek on celebrating this inspiring
milestone!
Michael Moravec ’97 was recently
awarded board certification by the
American Board of Physical Therapy
Specialists in the area of Orthopedics.
Michael and his wife Lisa reside in
Scottsbluff, NE.
