8th Grade Open House Set for Tuesday, November 10th
Our annual 8th Grade Open House is coming up! Over the past few years, we have evolved
this program to be more of a showcase of all that Northview has to offer young people. Our
mission is to offer the best high school experience in northwest Ohio. In order to do that, we
need to continue to attract students and teachers who bring passion, energy, and talents into
the Northview Family. If you know of an 8th grader who is searching for a GREAT place to
spend their high school years, encourage the him or her to attend our welcoming program
next Wednesday night. Go Cats!
ACT Preparatory Course Up & Running Again in 2015-16, Part of Bigger Prep Plan
Experts will tell you that the two most important things that students can do to prepare to do
well on the ACT and SAT are to take challenging courses, and to work hard to do well in these
courses. Moreover, we spoke with competitive colleges from coast to coast over the past two
weeks, and the clear message across the board was that the first two things they look at when
considering a student for admission is rigor of courses taken in high school and how well that
student did in those rigorous courses. Keep this in mind in the spring semester, as you
discuss with your student their intentions for scheduling courses for next year. If he or she is
capable of challenging themselves with an Honors or Advanced Placement (AP) course,
encourage them to do so. Beyond these basic steps, we have a desire to provide targeted
preparation for our students. The College Prep Pathway will help students focus on what baby
steps they should be taking each month to be preparing for college along their high school
path. We hope to continue to offer practice ACT tests for students through the Northview
Parent Organization. We are waiting to see what the scaled-back Ohio testing schedule looks
like in order to see where we should schedule them. Finally, we are currently signing students
up for our ACT Prep Course, which will run this fall in preparation for the December ACT. We
plan to run the course again in the spring.
Northview Performing Arts Continues Tradition of All-State Recognition
Several students have earned All-State honors in Orchestra this fall, and our Summer Musical
has been chosen to perform at the state conference. Congratulations to Starr Jiang, Adam
Murphy, and Danny Lee on earning the a spot on the All-State Orchestra. Won Kim, Karen
Pan, McKenna Burke, and Erika Chen all earned All-State Alternate distinction as well. An
additional congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee on being chosen to perform as a full length production at the Ohio State
Thespian Conference. Way to go Cats!
Four Northview Wildcat Teams Brings Home NLL Championships This Fall
Our Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, and Boys Golf Teams all brought home NLL Championship trophies this fall. The Volleyball and Girls Soccer Teams split titles with Bowling Green
and Perrysburg, respectively. The Boys Soccer Team went undefeated (7-0) in league play on
their way to a 3rd straight league title. Boys Golf won based on both league match play and
their performance in the NLL Tournament. Way to go Cats!
Seniors Get Schooled in Finances and Dinner Etiquette
On Wednesday, November 11th, all Northview Seniors will get an advanced look at the real
world through a financial education program. Students will be given an advanced look at
what life after high school will look like, when bills and tangible responsibilities are thrust
upon them. On Monday, November 23rd, Seniors also have an opportunity to attend an
etiquette dinner at Mancy’s Italian, sponsored by the Leadership Academy, where they will
learn the dos and don’ts of a formal dining setting. They will also practice delivering a toast
in front of an audience.

Northview Theatre Presents: The Music Man
Northview Theatre proudly presents “The Music Man” November 19-22
(SYLVANIA, Ohio) – With a ‘hundred and ten cornets close at hand’ and ‘seventy-six
trombones’ in the lead, the “big parade” will soon take center stage at Sylvania
Northview High School when “The Music Man” comes to life Thursday through Sunday, November 19-22 inside the Northview Performing Arts Center.
A timeless classic on Broadway since 1957, The
Music Man, written by Meredith Willson and
Franklin Lacey, takes place in small-town, middleAmerica in the summer of 1912. The central character, Harold Hill, posing as a band leader, attempts to con naïve Iowan townsfolk but falls in
love with a piano teacher in the meantime before
the musical fraud has a chance to skip town. The
Music Man mixes drama, comedy and the classic
music and lyrics by Willson while Northview’s finest sing and dance their way all the way through.
The Music Man, a perpetual hit on Broadway, won
five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, running
for 1,375 performances. The show’s success led
to a cast album, winning the first Grammy Award
for Best Musical Theatre Album and spent 245
weeks on the Billboard charts.
On the heels of successful Sylvania Northview
Theatre musical productions such as The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee, All Shook Up
and Shrek, The Music Man is sure to take its rightful place among the quality productions Northview Theatre has become renowned for across northwest Ohio and

Northview Theater added a rare summer musical production this year, The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee, which went over with rave reviews. In fact, The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee garnered statewide notoriety and was selected to play at the Ohio State Thespian Conference in Columbus in March.

Our Northview Sylvania Cosmetology students had the amazing opportunity as
invitational guests to visit the The Paul Mitchell School, a cosmetology academy in
Toledo, to meet nationally renowned industry professional artists Melissa Jaqua
and Abe Barron. Melissa, a native Toledoan, pursued her dreams after high
school to become a true rock star in the beauty industry. Her many accolades of
work include televisions “The Voice”, “Dancing with the Stars”, and the Oscar winning motion picture “The Artist”. The L.A. based salon owners (yes they both still
work behind the chair) enjoy giving back to community by inspiring future cosmetology professionals through sharing their journey to success and how amazing the beauty business is with all the wonderful opportunity it holds. Melissa and
Abe shared “the good, bad and the ugly” about what it takes to market yourself to
be the best you can be, which is exactly what our students needed to hear. Melissa and Abe articulated the road to success holds no excuses; make good choices
and most importantly “be in attendance” to assure you never miss out on an opportunity! Our fortunate students also had the privilege to witness Melissa and
Abe in action with live hairstyling and haircutting, which was nothing less than
stunning. An unforgettable experience for all!

On the Horizon in 2015-16…
Northview’s College Prep Pathway Launched
 Northview launches our new College Prep Pathway website, bringing all of the information you need to prepare
for the college application and selection process to one webpage. Thanks to the hard work of Mr. Kwiatkowski,
Mr. Vens, our Counselors, and more, this resource is now available to all Northview students. Mont by month,
the College Prep Pathway gives students and parents timely focal points and hyperlinks to resources.

in the summer after your senior year.
 In addition to the website, you can receive periodic updates by following @NVCollegePrep on Twitter and/or signing up
for the Northview Counselors’ Remind101 text messages, which are distributed to each grade level. You can sign up
for text message reminders by following these steps:

will be well served in this seminar style course. Students will conduct their own, original and authentic research
under the advisement of a faculty member.
Thinking about a career in science, medicine, genetics, nanotechnology, technology, engineering, code, mathematics, energy, space exploration, or other options under the STEM umbrella? Get an in-depth look at a topic of your
choosing here.
Competitive colleges are looking for passion an authenticity, and for those shining stars who stand out from the
rest of the pool of applicants, who also have good grades, are involved in their school communities, and high college entrance test scores. Conducting your own research can help provide an advantage and demonstrate your
passion.
Learning how to conduct academic research will give students a good foundation for studying at an institution of
higher learning.
Students will submit their research projects for competitions in the spring, and will have a chance to earn scholarship money.
Honors STEM Research is open to students in grades 10 through 12 who have completed Honors Science 9 and
have a teacher recommendation.

Northview High School’s National Honor Society
Northview High School is proud to have a chapter of the National Honor Society serving its school and community. Our National Honor Society chapter
holds its four pillars of character, scholarship, leadership, and service, in the highest esteem. Prior to
membership, each of these pillars is evaluated by
Faculty Council, along with the completion of a
comprehensive application. Faculty Council
considers the following when selecting and retaining
members into National Honor Society at Northview.
Volunteerism at Northview and throughout the community. Faculty Council looks for student involvement in activities, clubs,
sports, and overall Northview participation, outside of daily class requirements and activities. Students must be actively involved in community clubs,
groups, etc., along with volunteering to support our community. All NHS students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher to be considered for and
retain membership in NHS. NHS candidates and members are upstanding students, free of suspensions and/or codings. All current and potential members must adhere to behavioral expectations throughout their career at
Northview. For more information regarding Northview’s chapter of National
Honor Society, please contact Darla Omey at 419.824.8570, ext. 5208 or

OGT Review Opportunities
In Ohio, current juniors and seniors are required to pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) in order to graduate.
If you received a letter from Principal Vens, then your child either did not pass one or more subject areas or
has not yet taken the OGT. The retake will be administered October 26 – October 30. In order to better prepare students for the material on these tests, we have two tutoring opportunities available. First, your son or
daughter may be assigned to The Learning Center (TLC) during his or her study hall or commons period. Second, we have after school sessions that began on September 21st and continue through October 22nd. Results
from last year’s intervention program indicate that students who attended tutoring sessions for at least 3
hours saw their test score increase by an average of 11.6 points.

Counselor’s Corner
Seniors:


Seniors met individually with their respective counselors in October to discuss post-secondary plans.
If any senior has not scheduled an appointment yet, please, stop down to meet with your counselor regarding your plans.
Don’t Forget:

Get college applications in by mid-November

Pick up transcript request forms in guidance

Official transcripts are sent by counselors. Don’t forget envelopes and stamps, if needed.

Check all deadlines on college applications. Many are earlier that December 1st.

Check the scholarship file drawer in the guidance office weekly.

The FAFSA (free Application for Federal Student Aid) application process begins January 1st. Log onto www.fafsa.ed.gov

Many college representatives visits to Northview are complete. The guidance office can assist with any continued college research.
Most colleges are now using online view books.
SAT and ACT Testing:
Colleges require that you take one or more standardize admissions test. The most common tests are ACT and SAT. Check the literature
on your preferred college before taking SAT II, Subject Tests, to determine if it is required. The writing portion should be included in your
test. Students can register on-line. In certain situations there are limited registration packets available in the guidance office for both
tests. Students should check with the individual schools to which they are applying to find out which test to take. Seniors planning on
attending college next year should be sure to take the ACT or SAT in the fall.
Northview High School code for all test registration and college applications is #364-930
Juniors:

Counselors will be meeting with juniors in early 2016 to discuss:

Test dates for ACT and SAT I/II

Inform students about spring college night

Discuss college and career planning

Jr. Plan Meeting will be held in early 2016
Sophomores:

Check out www.ohiomeansjobs.com Counselors will be working with students to introduce this resource for career counseling purposes.

Check out the list of clubs and activities on the Sylvania Northview website and be sure to get involved!
Freshman:

When a student becomes a freshman, everything starts to “count” towards his/her permanent high school resume-grades, activities,
attendance, disciplinary record, etc. As parents you can assist your student’s by continuing to emphasize the importance of doing
their best each and every day. Encourage students to record their activities, spots, clubs, etc. on a resume for future use.

Counselors will be meeting with Freshman individually to discuss their transition to high school and begin the career planning process in the month of November.

Wyandotte Yearbook Important Senior Information
Senior Ads
A fun way to make your senior’s yearbook more memorable and personal is the senior ad.
Families can purchase ads ranging in price from $60 for a business card size up to $390 for
a full page ad. You may add special messages and include pictures of your senior. Senior
ads must be purchased by October 23, 2015 to be included in the yearbook.
Senior Parents - We need all senior portraits turned in before October 16, 2015. If we don’t
have your senior’s photo they won’t be pictured in the yearbook.
SENIOR PORTRAITS
In order to be included in the Northview High School 2016 yearbook, there are a few guidelines which need to be followed. The yearbook has an agreement with Scott Hall Photography in Sylvania that assures all seniors who have a sitting the guarantee of the portrait of
their choice for the yearbook.
We work with many photographers, so any photographer may take your son’s or daughter’s
senior portrait; however, we must receive a color formal portrait with a plain portrait background by October 16, 2015. The actual picture should be a formal shot of the head and
shoulders ONLY and should be a wallet size. It’s important that you give your photographer
this information, we DO NOT want photos with trees, other objects, hands, etc. Your senior
must be facing the camera and cannot be leaning into the frame from an extreme angle or
leaning against an object. No Facebook style photos please and we do not recommend that
you take your own photos. We reserve the right to determine that your photo is not of the
proper quality in which case we will use the school’s formal portrait taken for the School ID
instead. We will contact you in this situation.
A Parent Committee puts together a Senior Composite of all the seniors and a second senior
portrait will be needed for the Senior Composite, please keep this in mind when you order
your photos. If you or your photographer turns in your photos on a DVD/CD or through
email, a second photo will not be needed.
YEARBOOK SALES
The 2015 yearbook SOLD OUT – don’t let your student be without a yearbook this year. BUY

$65.00 through December. January’s price will be $70.00 and the last day to buy is
