Association Cup 2 Everyone’s Game 3 Country Championships 5 Country Championships Results 5 May Calendar 10 It has certainly been a very busy start to the basketball year with the Country Championships (February), SBL Pre-Season tournament (February), SBL season commencing (March), the end of the 2014/15 High Performance activities (March), Under 20/Ivor Burge Australian Junior Championships (February), West Coast Waves season finishing (February), our first Everyone’s Game Carnival for 2015 (March) and a number of courses and other activities taking place. After seven years in the position, our CEO Rick Smith finished with Basketball WA on Wednesday 1 April. Rick oversaw an extremely important period for Basketball WA with the transition to the WA Basketball Centre and the implantation of a co-management structure achieved. Additionally Rick oversaw key governance reforms, a new constitution, increased revenue streams and the expansion of existing and new competitions are some of the key areas of growth on and off the court that have been seen over the past seven years. On behalf of the Board, staff and our members I would like to extend our thanks to Rick and wish him the best for the future. Moving forward the Board has commenced the search for a replacement CEO. In the interim period I will be undertaking an Acting CEO role with our organisation continuing to operate as normal on a day to day basis for our members. Please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or in the office should you have any questions or concerns. As we head further in to April I would like to wish our Under 18 State Teams well for their Australian Junior Championships. The teams were presented at our new City versus Country Clash on March 28 at Cockburn. A massive amount of work has gone in to preparing these teams on and off the court and I would like to thank all involved from Basketball WA to the coaches, athletes, managers and parents. Basketball WA PO Box 185 FLOREAT WA 6014 6272 0741 [email protected] As our Country Associations finish their seasons, basketball in the metropolitan area is full speed ahead with WABL set to start at the end of the month. This will be the first year of our four year growth plan with the competition. We will be rolling out a full grading structure in the Under 12 competitions and adding a third Under 14 division this year. Whilst there are bound to be some speed bumps along the way, this restructure is a key platform for our sport to grow and develop at the representative levels and I would like to thank all of our Associations for their support of this initiative, we look forward to working with all Associations over the next four years as we continue to roll out this key restructure to the competition. Best of luck to our SBL teams as their seasons continue and I trust to see many of you out and about at a basketball stadium in the coming months. Christian Rice BWA COO 2. 2015 Smarter than Smoking Association Cup Program Basketball WA, in conjunction with Healthway, promoting the Smarter than Smoking Message and School Sport WA, has commenced the 2015 Smarter than Smoking Associations Cup program. The Association Cup competition is open to Primary Schools in the greater metropolitan area. The program will consist of; · Smarter than Smoking Association Cup Carnival days · Smarter Than Smoking Basketball Development Clinics leading up to Smarter than Smoking Association Cup Carnivals Smarter than Smoking Association Cup Carnival days are the feature of the program and are held at ten different locations across the Perth Metropolitan area (Two in Term 1, Two in Term 2, Five in Term 3, Two in Term 4). Each Association Cup will be contested by teams representing schools within the area consisting of players in years 4, 5 and 6 and will be hosted by the local Basketball Association. This year with the realignment of Year 7 classes to High Schools, Year 7 students will no longer be able to participate in this program, however Year 4’s have now been included. At carnival days, students are exposed to competitive basketball while learning the values of teamwork and sportsmanship. Winners of each carnival day earn the right to call their school a “Champion School” and will then represent their Association and school at the Smarter than Smoking Champion Schools Cup competition. Schools participating in the Smarter than Smoking Association Cup and Champion Schools Cup competition will receive a Smarter Than Smoking Basketball Development Clinic, run by a Basketball WA Development Officer in the period leading up to their carnival day. Basketball WA Development Officer, Kennedy Kereama, has been kept busy in March with clinics at over tem schools for the Stirling and Willetton Cups. Schools who are interested in being involved in the Smarter than Smoking Association Cup and Champion Schools Cup competitions are invited by BWA and SSWA to nominate for one of the listed events below in your area. Everyone’s Game Carnival The first Everyone’s Game Carnival for 2015 was played on Sunday 22 March. The Carnival runs four times a year and caters for athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities. Games are played with modified rules encouraging participation and fun. Games are held using a round robin format with teams from the metro area competing against each other. The March carnival saw 58 athletes competing in two divisions catering for varied abilities, and all games were played with friendly spirit and enthusiasm. The conclusion of the event saw an All Star selected team to face off against the Coaches, with those not competing cheering on their favourite players and coaches. An award ceremonies proceeded after the final game where individual medal winners and participates were acknowledged. PMBL – New Winter Season The PMBL’s Winter season has just kicked off with all three nights of competition once again completely full. Nominations closed in record time for the new season with more teams than ever looking to join. This season will run through until late-July with the Grand Finals being played during the week of the 20th. The new season sees the reintroduction of the Veteran Men’s division on Tuesday nights. The Vets division was a constant during the years over at the old Perry Lakes Stadium, and based on feedback from some of our teams we opened nominations for the division and have been able to get it running once again. This season the division contains six teams with all players turning 35 or older this year, and we certainly hope that it will grow in seasons to come. Teams who are still hoping to join the PMBL can register for the waiting list by contacting the Competitions Administrator Tiwai Wilson. The competition’s next season is Spring which begins at the end of July, and nominations for that season will open on Monday the 22nd of June. To keep up-to-date with everything that’s going on in the PMBL and WABC, like us on Facebook (BWA Perth Metro Basketball League) and check out the competition website www.pmbl.asn.au. 2015 BWA Junior Club Championships After the success of last year’s first ever BWA Junior Club Championships, the dates have now been set for the 2015 edition. The second annual Championships will be played over the weekend of the 11 th and 12th of July, 2015. The competition will once again bring together Junior Domestic Clubs and teams from all around the state, providing an opportunity for players of all skill levels to compete against athletes from other Associations. Last year over 50 teams from 20 junior clubs and 12 affiliated Associations competed in the inaugural Championships and we hope to increase on those numbers in 2015. Nominations will once again be open for boys and girls under 12, 14 and 16 divisions. Associations will be contacted in the near future with further information as well as instructions on how to nominate for this year’s Championships. To keep up-to-date with the Championship’s news and see last year’s results, check out the competition’s website www.wajcc.basketball.net.au. If you have any questions or queries regarding the Junior Club Championships contact Basketball WA’s Competitions Administrator Tiwai Wilson by phone 6272 0753 or email [email protected]. Top Club Basketball WA in partnership with the Western Australian Sports Federation recently conducted a Top Club workshop at Basketball WA. The Associations that attended on the night found the workshop to be a valuable part of their planning process and have encouraged other Associations to participate in the Top Club planning tool. Testimonies: “The Top Clubs tool for Associations is a great initiative and one that all Associations will benefit from. It will be beneficial for future planning and structured goal setting within our Association. Well done to Jarrah on a great workshop.” Rae Berry - East Perth Basketball Association “Really enjoyable, I particularly liked how efficient the facilitators were, that the workshop was interactive (rather than lecture-based), and how applicable the Top Club website is in developing guidelines, priority areas and action plans”. Fleur McIntyre – Cockburn Basketball Association If your Association is interested in participating in a Top Club planning session please contact Jarrah Calder at Basketball WA on 9272 0761 or you can email [email protected] 5. Communicare Development Program The Basketball WA Inclusion Program together with Communicare has kicked off its initial Youth Basketball program. The program has been designed to target children from marginalised Western Australian communities. The Program is a six stage development program which, depending on the skill level of its participants, teaches them various basketball skills and then builds these skills up. The program will kick off on 9 March at the Belmont Oasis and run on March 16, 23, 30 and continue on May 4 and 11. 2015 Country Championships The 2015 Country Championships have been and gone for another year!! This event also means the 2014/2015 Country Season is now finished, with Committees finalising their tasks, both organisational and financial, before the winter season sports commence. Basketball WA would like to take this opportunity to thank all Associations for your commitment and enthusiastic approach to our sport. Without your help and assistance, our players and their parents would not have the access to basketball that they do. Enjoy the break and we look forward to working with all Associations again in September 2015. 2015 BWA Country Championships Results Please find the results and All Star/Most Valuable Player Awards for this 2015 Country Championships: Game Results Weekend One – 7/8 February 2015 Division Champions Runners Up Score U16 Boys Championships Geraldton Bunbury 38-29 U16 Boys Division 2 Northam Waroona 38-23 U16 Boys Division 3 Donnybrook Australind 29-24 U18 Girls Championship Bunbury Mandurah 39-32 U18 Girls Division2 Australind Esperance 30-17 U18 Girls Division 3 Denmark Pinjarra 32-27 U18 Boys Championship Mandurah Geraldton 34-20 U18 Boys Division 2 Australind Manjimup 28-13 U18 Boys Division 3 Harvey Collie 22-5 Grand Final Referees Matt Bray – Tom Price Ben Wren – Bunbury Dan Bryant – Busselton Kelly Brown – Australind Brad Bartley – Pinjarra Lester Dodd – Pinjarra Suzie Giblett – Manjimup Raya Thompson – Eaton Margaret Jones – Denmark Theo Kearing – Waroona Justine Vincent – Australind Joseph Iaria – Geraldton Bryan Johanssen – Kalgoorlie Josh England – Bunbury Alan Smith – Eaton Rick Anderson – Donnybrook Frank Ralston – Waroona Darren Janitz – Albany 6. Under 20 WA Women’s team medal at National Championship Above: Slam Dunk Champion David Rulyancich with basketball greats David Graham, Cal Bruton and Andrew Gaze The Under 20 WA State Women’s team wrapped up a successful National Championship in Dandenong in February winning a silver medal after being defeated by Victoria in the final. Under the guidance of Head Coach Ryan Petrik (Rockingham), the Under 20 Women amassed a 5-3 record for the week, dropping round games to Victoria and NSW. In the semi-final, WA were able to reverse a one-point loss to NSW which saw them set up a rematch with the strong Victorian team. Unfortunately Victoria showed their class in the final to run out winners. In the Men’s side of the Tournament, WA can consider themselves unlucky not to have been playing off for a medal after some strong performances in the round games which included a 16-point win over eventual Bronze medal winners NSW. However with a medal being unattainable, the boys won their final game of the Tournament beating QLD 85-55 to finish fifth. In the Ivor Burge Competition, the WA Men battled hard all week under the guidance of Head Coach Chris Saligari. Whilst they were unable to record a victory on court, the boys were more than competitive in all games. A highlight for the team was David Rulyancich winning the Slam Dunk Competition at half-time of the U20 Men’s Final. Basketball WA would like to congratulate all players and staff on their efforts throughout the Tournament. 10.
