Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders www.popard.ca 1–604–946–3610 Helping Schools Help Students Supporting Learning with Diverse Needs Across Ages and Abilities Richmond, BC | May 7 & 8, 2015 | 9:00 am — 4:00 pm Vancouver Airport Marriott Hotel | 7571 Westminster Highway May 7, 2015: Dr. PAT MIRENDA Including Students with ASD in General Education Classrooms This presentation will focus on inclusive education as a school reform issue that emphasizes active participation and learning in grade-level curricular content for all students. The principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) will be discussed using examples of students with autism spectrum disorders across the age range. Pat Mirenda is a Professor in the Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology and Special Education, and Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Collaboration in Autism (CIRCA) at the University of British Columbia. She is a BCBA-D and a Fellow of both the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC). She has published numerous research articles, chapters and present frequently at international, national, and regional conferences. Her current research examines the developmental trajectories of children with autism and their families, and the services and supports provided to bilingual children with developmental disabilities. May 8, 2015: Dr. RICHARD GUARE Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents: Interventions in Educational Settings The objectives of this seminar are to introduce educators to practical strategies that can be used to teach and support the development of executive skills in children. This seminar will extend Dr. Guare’s presentation made at POPARD’s conference in 2013. Dr. Guare will first briefly review the executive skills model that he and his colleagues have developed for children and adolescents. Following this, Dr. Guare will discuss the three key components of a model for intervention, Environmental Modifications, Skills Instruction and Incentives. Building on these, he will present specific examples of how each component can be used with children individually, in the classroom and on a class-wide basis. Dr. Guare is a neuropsychologist and a BCBA-D. He has presented and published research and clinical work involving attention, executive skills, and neurological disorders. He is co-author of the books, Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents, Smart but Scattered and Coaching Students with Executive Skill Deficits. Who should attend ?
