Frank T. Williams, Jr.
1940-2013

Born Frank T. Williams, Jr. on April 12,
1940 in Norfolk, Virginia. Frank grew up
always interested in taking things apart
and fixing them, especially all things automotive.
When he reached his 17 th birthday,
Frank felt it was time to serve his country and enlist in the United States Coast
Guard. Three years after entering the
Coast Guard, on April 17th, 1960, he
married Marilyn Reed in Dedham, Massachusetts. A week before the wedding
he purchased a 1953 Austin Healey
100/4 for $1,000.00. Frank loved his
Healey but it was not to stay for long.
Their first son, Frank T. Williams III,
born in June, 1961 passed away at the
age of 18 months. Their second son,
Richard, was born in April, 1963, and their
youngest son, Reed, in March 1965.
During his service career, as part of the
first response strike teams, Frank became
a specialist in oil spills and pollution control. After 23 years of service to our country as a Chief Petty Officer, he retired.

One Jag, Two Jags

My husband and I did not intend on owning twin Jaguars, it just happened. I
wanted a Jaguar in the worst way for
about 4 years but we could never find one
that was affordable and not one foot in
the junkyard. My dad’s family is English and there is just something sexy about
the shape of a Jaguar that makes it unlike
any car on the road. I like to be unique
and Jaguars fit that bill! In February 2012

He then started his own business as consultant, trainer and director for implementing oil spill procedures for the Coast Guard
as well as reviewing contingency plans
at US Navy bases all around the world.
All these years since selling the Healey,
Frank had been growing the itch to purchase a Jaguar E-type OTS. In 1986 he
located a 1970 Series 2 that a doctor in
Manchester was selling. This was just
about the time when New England XK
Association, NEXKA, was becoming Jaguar Association of New England so Frank
and Marilyn became members. Frank
would eventually restore his 1970 E-type
but not before purchasing another 1969
Series 2 OTS as a parts car that would
eventually be restored for Marilyn. These
two E-types, Frank’s blue OTS, NH registration OILSLK and Marilyn’s white
OTS, NH registration TAXPLN were
seen at every car club event for many
years. In 1993, Marilyn become president of J.A.N.E. and Frank became one
of the three co-vice presidents. The
couple became involved in every aspect
of our club for many years.
After the completion of the two E-types,
Frank began feeling the urge to own
another Healey 100/4 and the search
was on. As fate would have it, there
appeared a partially restored to primer,
1953 100/4 in a barn in Maine. In very
short order, this car was Franks and
he wasted no time getting the restoration started. With several British cars
in the garage, both Frank and Marilyn
became active members in British Cars
of New Hampshire and, in their usual
manner, went on to become directors.
Suffering most of his life from severe
rheumatoid arthritis in every joint in his
body, no one ever heard Frank complain about the pain and discomfort or
say that he couldn’t do something. He was
always willing to lend a hand putting together an event, helping someone find a
part for their car or doing anything else
one would ask of him.
Frank was a great friend to many and he
will be deeply missed.

Prime Minister’s
Missive
A picture is worth a thousand words –
and there are lots of pictures on the
BCNH 23Rd Birthday Party in this issue, so I’ll let them do most of the “talking.”
It certainly looks like having the Holiday
Cheers Party canceled due to snow last
December has turned out to be a good
thing. From that I think we have learned
that there are just too many other Holiday Parties going on in December and
we have BCNH members who would
like to come to our party, but just can’t
because of a scheduling conflict.
February – being “Cabin Fever Season”
- doesn’t have so many conflicting activities, and it sure showed in the turnout.
With 92 members and friends there, the
Birthday Party at Fratello’s on February
22, it was the largest event attendance
we have ever had – including the Show
of Dreams (SOD) I think. There may be
more people at the SOD, but a lot of them
are not BCNH Members.
So, I think we’ve learned to just bag the
December Holiday Party in the future and
focus on the February Party instead.
The other thing that was gratifying is the
fact that everyone was “moving around”
so much, with conversation groups forming and re-forming constantly, I didn’t get
any sense that “the Regulars” formed one
group while those who are less “regular”
were left to feel as outsiders. That just
didn’t happen. It is great to be part of a
club that is so inclusive and that has so
much energy.
Let me put in a plug here for Prime Minister Emeritus Wade and Lin dos Santos.

In fact, considering that the attendance
at “regular meetings” is usually around
40, there were substantially more members at the party who are not “Regulars”
than there were who are. That leads me
to think that some members may think that
the regular monthly meetings are “just dry
‘business meetings’” so they don’t come.
Let me assure that is not true. We are a
social club and our regular monthly meetings are almost as much fun as the
party was. If you have not been attending monthly meetings, let me suggest that
you try them for a while. I encourage
you to come to the next meeting – on
March 3rd and see that it is just a continuation of the party. We really do
have a ball. As I have often said, the
primary purpose of our meetings is
to meet!!
On the subject of “all the energy,” I encourage you to take a look at the Club
website at www.bcnh.org. Click on
Events just under the banner and the
Events Calendar should pop up. You will
see that Sue MacDuff – the Club’s “Calendar Girl” has been hard at work entering the activities that our club members (and other club’s club members)
have already planned for this season.

we met George who has been our private “jagman” for the last two years.
George sold us his Jaguar, a 1990 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign that we call “Jag
1” and for very good reason. 9 months
later we bought a 1992 Jaguar XJ6 intending to use it for parts for our first
Jag but it ran so good and look so
pretty, we decided we could not sacrifice one Jag for the other, so “Jag 2”
was born. The nicknames are the only
way that we can tell them apart since
except for the headlights the cars are identical inside and out. We are very grateful to George for not only caring for our
cars but taking the time to teach us about
our cars and what they need (and don’t
need) to stay “healthy” on the road. One
drawback to both cars is there is no CD
player. I miss CD’s but luckily still have
some cassettes. I also think that duct tape
can fix almost anything and have been
known to duct tape door panels, wires and
other objects as a temporary or sometimes
permanent repair and we own over 120
fuses! If we have learned nothing over
the last two years, the Jaguars have taught
us that maintenance is cheaper than major breakdowns and tow bills!
Jaguar made three types of XJ6’s, Base
model, Vanden Plas and Sovereign. Our
cars are a base model and Sovereign but
surprisingly not too many folks can tell
the difference. The interiors are walnut
and biscuit leather and the engines are
4.0 DOC, the largest engine Jaguar made
for these cars and of course the engines
are identical.
The 1990 Jaguar was in perfect condition as George had driven and fussed over
it for two years before selling it to me.
The 1992 Jaguar had a rough life. Subject to ownership by a Chevy Nova “enthusiast” Jag 2 never really had a chance
at a normal existence, and when the engine died, the Nova guy left it sitting under a tree, with a “ghetto moon roof”
someone had installed (my son’s nickname for it) and the roof leaked, big surprise. The leaking roof took out the headliner and affected the electrical system

so presently Jag 2 needs some work on
heating, AC and other dash related problems. Our bucket list for Jag 2 is long
and expensive but we never give up on
our Jags no matter what.
We are very attached to our “girls” as
we call them and have nicknamed our
garage the “Jag Shack” installing separate cabinets for storage of supplies and
cleaners because white cars get dirty fast
and as we all know Jags leak at least these
two Jags do! Each Jag has its own “personality” too. Jag 1 likes to break down
3 days before a big car show so she can
be hauled over to Georges house and enjoy a “spa day” with him getting all her
issues fixed. Sometimes George has
worked till midnight fixing the cars so we
don’t miss a big show. Jag 2 enjoys
breaking down on the way to a big car
show or during a car show, luckily we
show the cars together so nobody goes
without a ride home. The furthest distance Jag 2 has been hauled is from
Somersworth, New Hampshire the day
we bought her, dead but certainly still a
pretty jag. Needless to say, we have
met many new friends along the way from
all over NH and they are usually employed
as tow truck drivers and they all know
the way to George’s house.
For the first year we owned the Jags we
belonged to an American car club, and
although the people are very nice, they
never quite understood the mentality of
owning a Jaguar, maintenance, cost of
parts, reliability (or lack of) and simple
things like “why do you only have one
windshield wiper?” or “why does your
hood open that way?”. We tried to educate folks on the beauty of owning a British car, some got it others just thought we
were crazy or gluttons for punishment, I
agreed that we were a “bit of both” actually, but its all about having fun.
We try to take the Jags together whenever possible, the looks we get driving
down the road are priceless and I have to
admit, Joe and I have raced the Jags to
see which is faster, so far Jag 2 with all
her problems has the engine of a beast
(most likely jacked up a bit from the
Nova guy) and has beaten Jag 1 every
time. What Jag 1 lacks in power she
makes up for in amenities, her stereo
is better and she has heat!
Our Jags go to cruise nights and car
shows all over NH and MA and always show together because after all
they are twins! My husband drives Jag
2 and I drive Jag 1 and we use walkie
talkies to talk to each other on the way to
the shows in case the lead car gets lost
or breaks down. Jag 2 carries our equipment (canopy, chairs, cleaners and misc)
and Jag 1 carries the trophies and snacks
and camera equipment as I am a professional photographer. I confess these two
Jaguars are probably the most photographed cars in all of NH, I just can’t get
enough pics of our girls! Next year I
hope to have them in the local holiday
parade but that depends on the weather,
we shall see. We usually put the cars
away in late October tucked safely in our
“Jag shack” for a nice winter nap, but I
have been found sneaking Jag 1 out for a
quick trip to Concord, as I am an on air
personality at WNHN in Concord and
sometimes miss “jagging” up the highway!
Probably the best thing Joe and I did was
join the NH British Car club. We immediately felt welcome from the very first
meeting we attended we knew we were
among our “peeps”! We loved showing
the cars at the “show of dreams” this year,
surrounded by British cars, we were in
heaven! We also enjoyed all the cruises
we went on especially the covered bridge
tour! Its so refreshing to be with folks
who share our joy and headaches of owning British cars and still love them anyway!
I guess I would say the last two years
have taught us a lot about British culture
and automobile maintenance but most of
all, patience and pride of ownership in the
good times and the breakdowns!

Polenchar have been working with SAU
81 Hudson School Board, Alvirne High
School and the Hudson Historical Society to secure the 2014 venue for the Show
of Dreams. The committee is happy to
announce the Hudson School Board has
approved BCNH to use the field at Alvirne
Hill House on Route 102,Hudson, NH as
the site for this year’s show. This field
was chosen because of the road exposure, location on Route 102 and proximity to hotels and restaurants in the area
for those participants traveling from a
great distance.
The show date is Saturday, July 26 from
With the addition of The New Hampshire
Food Bank as a second charity, we have
decided to use a Mini Cooper as the drop
spot for the spectator donations at the
entrance to the field. Basically: “Throw
the Money in the Mini”
This new venue will require the club to
bring in port-a-potty facilities. We are
contacting several providers to find the
best available. We will also be researching a police detail for traffic control due
to the volume of traffic on Route 102.
The 1st place trophies will be the BCNH
We have acquired an aerial view of the
new field. The field crew discussed the
entrance procedure, the car placement,
vendor parking, and general layout of
tents for regalia, raffle, DJ, etc.
The next SOD meeting is scheduled for
March 15th at the home of Norma Karle
& Rod Folia. Norma will send out an email with dinner details.

We love, love, love birthday parties and
this one was fabulous! Thank you Goldie
and Wade for organizing this event. There
were generous donations to the NH Food
Bank both with goods and monies.
Fratello’s did a great job keeping our
crowd happy. The food, and plenty of it,
was delicious. There was plenty of room
to mix and mingle and we did that in
spades. With our growing membership
(nearly 300) 92 people came to say
thanks to the founding members of British Cars of New Hampshire. The birthday cake with featured marques, was
baked and decorated by Inga Griffin. It
has to be good if it’s Inga’s
It was just the perfect day after this brutally cold and snowy winter. Our spirits
were perked up and now we can look
forward to club events and driving our
little British cars. Huzzah, winter is finally
coming to an end. With no December or
January meetings it was wonderful to see
old friends and new faces at this gala.
Director Bob Mitchell kept things relatively in order with his official Bobby
whistle.
There was a lively drawing for door prizes
cementing the idea that the “hair cap” is
now our club standard. To shade the different pates in convertible weather, these
caps came in various shades of blond,
brown, black and gray. For a switch up,
ladies caps were added and different visor and band colors too. At the closing
there was a photo op of our jaunty group
who were the winners of those caps.
It was discussed that this would be a nice
tradition to forgo a holiday party since that
season is just too busy and winter weather
is too dicey. Frankly, it’s like herding cats
to get everyone committed to a certain
date during the holiday season. This birthday party came at the right time and everyone appeared to be very happy to see
one another after two months of BCNH
withdrawal. For those who could not
make this event, we missed you and you
missed a swell party.

1958 TR3A - The car is a strong daily
driver. No rust (a bit of rough paint on the
nose over the radiator, though). If you
know Hagerty Class 1-4, this is a class 4
vehicle. Average sales prices for the last
couple years have been 14K or more.

years. Just bought a TR6 and have to get
rid of one of them (no room in the barn
for winter storage of both). Please feel

March, oh how I love the sound of that especially this year after this oh so very
cold Winter. Other than our regular Monthly Meeting on the 3rd, we have no
official BCNH events this month as of this time. March 22-23rd is Maple Weekend in New Hampshire so perhaps some of our members can recommend a fun
tour of some of our local Maple Producers. The Berkshire British Motor Club is
starting off the Season and inviting BCNH to join them in two events. On March
9th there will be the forth Maple Syrup Run. Other years BBMC has held a Fun
Rally but plans are still in the works and it may be just a drive to a Maple Sugar
House. Updates will be on our online calendar when I have them. There is also
a planned visit with BBMC to the Springfield Museums in Springfield MA https:/
/www.google.com/#q=springfield+ma+museums. There are five museums featuring fine art, history and science.
Looks like we are going to have a full season of events. Our calendar is rapidly
filling up. We will again be celebrating our Queen's Birthday and do another
Dinner Cruise on Lake Sunapee. Both were very popular events last year. Some
of the shows have listed their dates with the most important one, our very own
Show of Dreams date settled on the 26th of July at the Alvirne Hill House in
Hudson. We have several overnight events to be thinking about. The Mid Maine
Sports Car Club's event (May), World Wide Tour of Maine (June), British Motoring Festival in Nova Scotia (July) and a tour of the White Mountains (September). More details of these events are on the web site and will be updated
when I get more information. If you have any ideas on events or information on
other area events please let us know.

Funkhana
We have been invited by the Mid Maine Sports Car Club to join them for events on May 3rd and 4th at Owls Head Transportation
Museum, Owls Head, Maine. On Saturday, there will be a Funkhana at the museum. A Funkhana is described as "Parking lot
games for Sports Cars" and sounds like a really fun time. http://www.funkhana.com There is a fee of $85 for this event which
covers a box lunch and buffet dinner for two.
On Sunday, there will be a Fun Rally of 60 miles in the mountains west of Camden. The fee for this event is $10 which will be
a donation to the museum.
Suggested lodging is the Country Inn located nearby in Rockland. The Country Inn will offer a special for event participants, $99

Hahn has a 1970 TR6 that he has owned since 1971. The Inn has hosted many car groups.
