Stop 1 : Münchehagen
In a quarry close to Münchehagen (located in Lower Saxony), numerous dinosaur tracks have
been found. The site was recognized as a natural heritage site and a museum was built to
present the finds to the public. Most objects on display are life sized dinosaur models. The
dinosaur tracks date to the Lower Cretaceous and were most likely created in the muddy
flood plains of a river delta. Most tracks have been made by sauropods, but some belong to
ornithopods and theropods as well. Additionally, Europasaurus fossils, which were dwarfed
sauropods from the Late Jurassic, are stored and prepared in the Dinopark Münchehagen
Overnight: Limbach-Oberfrohna
The overnight will take place in the Hotel Goldener Becher in Limbach-Oberfrohna. It is a
small city located in Saxony near to Chemnitz. The biggest tourist attraction is the 12th
century Wolkenburg palace.
Stop 2: Chemnitz
Almost 300 years ago, a petrified forest was found in Chemnitz. The plants (mostly tree ferns
and giant horsetails) and animals died 291 million years ago due to a volcanic eruption. They
were covered with hot tephra and the silicic acid from the tephra ensured preservation. We
will visit the Naturkunde Museum in Chemnitz, which houses a large collection of petrified
wood, not only from Chemnitz itself, but from all over the world.
Lunch Break: Görlitz – Zgorzelec
In Görlitz (German) – Zgorzelec (Polish) we will stop for a lunch break. In is the easternmost
town in Germany, located on the Lusatian Neisse River in the state of Saxony. It is opposite
the Polish town of Zgorzelec, which was a part of Görlitz until 1945. The town has a beautiful
renovate architectural heritage (Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Historicist, Art Nouveau).
One example of this rich architectural heritage is the Schönhof, which is one of the oldest
civic renaissance buildings in Germany. Another medieval heritage is a model of the Holy
Sepulchre which was constructed in the late 15th Century.
Final Stop: Opole, Poland
The city lies on the border of Upper and Lower Silesia. You can visit the charming historical
city center and, of course, take part in the 13th annual meeting of the Eurpean Association
of Vertebrate Palaeontology.
