Bosworth Independent College has been running Summer School Language programmes for over 20 years, and this year, July 2015
we are launching our Junior Academic Programme.
Junior Academic Programme
This programme is aimed at secondary school students who are aged between 12-14 years and want to join a summer programme
that will provide specific subject learning alongside a UK cultural experience.
As a modular programme, each week we will cover topic-based study, therefore allowing students the flexibility to join us on any
given week, for a minimum of 2 weeks, or to complete the full four weeks. The subject areas will include; English Language, Maths,
Science (Biology/Chemistry/Physics) and Education Workshops. Twenty-one lessons a week will be covered in the classroom with
educational trips/activities taking place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.
The course content is largely based on Year 10 (UK system) this being the first year of GCSE, and each subject will cover a variety
of topics. Our staff will bring to life each subject making the content real and relevant. Whilst we appreciate students may have
already covered some of the content, we hope a refresher in the subject and learning in a new environment with varying teaching
methods will bring a new dimension to each area and provide a valuable reinforcement of knowledge. For some students learning in
their second language will also be a challenging experience.
Students will be set into small teaching groups, no class size greater than 10 and the level of teaching will reflect the ability levels of
each group.
English Language
The modules will concentrate on: improving grammar and listening skills, writing; focusing on essay technique & structure and
developing research & presentation skills. Throughout the course there will also be the opportunity to study some aspects of
literature exploring poetry and prose.
Mathematics
An introduction to GCSE mathematics focusing on the following areas: number, measurement, geometry, statistics, probability and
algebra. Number outlines essential arithmetic, prime factors, fractions, estimation and significant figures. Measurement covers metric
and imperial measure and conversions. In Geometry we look at its applications through the use of bearing and nets. Statistics
defines surveying, sampling and presenting data. Probability highlights space diagrams and Algebra shows graphical solutions.
Science
There will be an opportunity to integrate practical work with theoretical learning bringing topics to life in the classroom.
Biology is the study of living things. We will be looking at how and why animals and plants have adapted to their environments, and
the work of scientists in this area, especially in the role of zoos. Also looking at the impact humans have on habitats.
Chemistry is a branch of physical science concerned with composition, properties and the reactions of substances. Looking into
crude oil, what it is made from and what it is used for. Can the human race survive without it?
Physics is a natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through space and time, along with related concepts
such as energy and force. We will be looking at forces and their effects, interpreting data from tables and graphs relating to speed,
velocity and acceleration. Evaluating how the shape and power of a vehicle can be altered to increase the vehicle’s top speed.
Educational Workshops
The aim of these workshops is to expand subject knowledge, giving access to new areas, possibly yet to be studied, but that will be
on offer at GCSE and A Level. So, for example, students will look at the difference between Economics and Business Studies and
explore subjects such as Philosophy and Sociology. Sessions will also include professional speakers giving talks about various careers.
These will be fun workshops and our aim is to get the students thinking outside of their normal framework and looking ahead with
regard to subject choices and future career routes.
The course is set over four weeks from 19 July - 16 August. The programme has been designed for groups of 10 students, so
ideal for school parties, but we will also enrol individual applicants, please note, there is a minimum booking of two weeks.
Who should consider this programme?
• Students aged between 12-14 years old
• Students who are due to start GCSE/IGCSE
study
• Students in their first year of GCSE/IGCSE study and wish to reinforce
some learning
• Students who wish to experience GCSE study in a UK boarding environment
Enrolment criteria:
Students must have a good command of both written and spoken English; minimum standard IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent).
Where certificates are not available, we can provide an English test to assess suitability.
Excursions &
Activities
Full day excursions include some cultural
interest combined with either sight-seeing,
shopping or an arranged activity. Typical
activities include; a tour of Stratford upon
Avon, punting on the river at Cambridge,
a day out at Alton Towers Theme Park and
London where we make visits to art
galleries and many of the well known
tourist attractions. However students
must be prepared to do lots of walking
as this is usually the easiest and most
enjoyable way to see our cities!
Each year we try to vary the places we visit
and make our choice in line with the ages and
interests of the students and events that are
taking place in the UK.
The afternoon excursions will have an
educational theme and trips are selected
in line with the weather conditions at
the time. Our summer weather can vary!
The social programme will take place every evening between
19.00 – 21.00pm and will include various activities including craft nights,
in-house entertainment and sports; Badminton, Basketball, Football,
Volleyball, Table Tennis and Tennis. Students should also pack a
swimming costume, as we sometimes visit the local pool.
