BOYERTOWN BOROUGH NEWSLETTER – Spring 2015 The Borough of Boyertown 100 South Washington Street, Boyertown, PA 19512 610-369-3028 www.boyertownborough.org ____________________________________________________________________ EARTHFEST 2015 ~ Earth Day in the Boyertown Community Park will be celebrated on Saturday, April 25 from 10AM to 2PM. This event promises to be better than ever with many programs and activities. At 1:00, join us at the band shell in the back of the park for a presentation from the Philadelphia Zoo ~ “Who’s Who at the Zoo!! Come and discover amazing characteristics that define birds, mammals and reptiles. Learn all about classification and how animals adapt for survival in the wild. Our annual shred event, sponsored by Gerhart, Hartman & Ritner, will once again be available from 10 – 12. Bring your items to be shredded safely and securely. GH&R is pleased to provide this service again this year at Earthfest. The library will also be at the event the entire time to collect your gently used books and DVDs. Books will also be available for purchase. There will be pony rides and fun nature and recycling activities. Your spring flowers and trees will be available for purchase along with many other activities and nature crafts to make. We invite you to come and welcome and pet the piglets. And as always, there will be plenty of good food available the entire time. The YMCA will host its annual “Healthy Kids Day” in conjunction with the Earth Day. They will offer crafts, a moon bounce, an obstacle course and other fun activities. At 12:30, the winners of the BBB Photography Contest will be announced. Also, the Borough will be presented, for the 8th consecutive year, with the “Tree City USA Award”. The Tree Committee, a sub-committee of the Design Committee of the BBB has been instrumental in assisting the Borough with the annual recertification of this prestigious designation. All children are invited to create a poster on “what Earth Day means to me”. All posters will be displayed at the event. Our Trash-to-Treasure Contest & Flea Market is brought to you this year by Berks Mont Trading Co. Submit your items that have been refurbished, repaired or refreshed. We are pleased to have “Barn Fresh” and other flea market/antique dealers participating. Please check the borough website at www.boyertownborough.org for more information on the Earthfest and Trash to Treasure Contest. _______________________________________________________________________ Spring Clean Up Day Saturday, May 9 9AM – 11AM Calling all organizations, families and individuals ~ we are planning our annual Spring Clean-Up Day. Come out and join Building a Better Boyertown and the Borough with a Community clean-up after a long winter. Volunteers are wanted to help with sweeping, trash removal, mulching and planting in the Borough and along the main streets. Sign up by calling the BBB office at 610369-3054 or email [email protected]. Remember to bring gloves and brooms if you have them. Trash bags will be provided. ROAD CLOSINGS IN TOWN ~ April 18 ~ Please note that East Philadelphia Avenue will be closed from Chestnut Street to Washington Street on Saturday, April 18 between the hours of 10AM and 3PM for the BBB “Coming out of Hibernation” event. Monday, May 25 ~ Memorial Day Parade. Parade starts at the Senior High School at 9AM. Watch for information on upcoming road repairs in the borough this summer. *************************************** Please be reminded that the borough ordinance requires all persons living in the borough to keep their lawns mowed and their sidewalks clear of weeds. ***************************** POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES ~ “Ribbons of Respect” Blue ribbons are popping up across Berks County, serving as a symbol of thanks to local police officers. *************************************** Borough Council has unanimously approved the sale of the rail yard property to the Berks County Redevelopment Authority. This sale will provide greater opportunities for the growth and success of the Colebrookdale Railroad and the Borough. The policemen need to see that we do support them and recognize how much they mean to the safety of our community. ************************************** Residents are encouraged to show their support of our law enforcement and are encouraged to display the ribbons outside of homes or businesses between March 20 and April 20. FINALLY SPRING IS IN THE AIR I SEE SOME GREENING, NOT MUCH, BUT SOME. OUR STREET CREW IS CLEANING OUR STREETS SO I AM GOING TO SWEEP THE PAVEMENT OF DEBRIS FROM A VERY LONG WINTER. IT’S TIME TO PRETTY OUR LITTLE TOWN! I AM READY TO PLANT SOME FLOWERS. HOW ABOUT YOU! Take a moment to send a card of support to your local police. Most importantly, if you see a police officer, be sure to thank them for their service. Boyertown will once again participate in the PA aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project. MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MARIANNE DEERY WHAT’S NEW IN THE PARK? ~ COMMUNITY PARK FRANKLIN STREET PARK WASHINGTON STREET PARK The Disc Golf Course will be closed on Saturday, April 25 from 9AM – 3PM for Earthfest. There is a position open on the Park & Recreation Board. Members of the Park & Rec board must be a resident of the Borough and love the park. Any interested candidate should contact the Borough Manager. Won’t you please consider becoming a supporter of Boyertown’s Sensational Summer and Fun Days events? Your generous sponsorship dollars help us to provide the fireworks and pig races at Fun Days and educational and fun activities during our Earth Day and Fall Festival events. A $100 donation to the park will allow you to be a “Friend of the Park”. Sponsorships of larger amounts are still available. For more information, contact Borough Hall or Lori Carnes at 610-367-9821. Calendar of Park Activities: Saturday, April 25 Earth Day 10AM – 2PM Saturday, May 9 Disc Golf Tournament Smoking is no longer allowed in any of the Boyertown Community Parks. Skateboarding is also banned in the parks. Bicycles are allowed in the park but not on the playgrounds, the pavilions and the walking trail. Please be reminded that while dogs are allowed in the park (they love the walking trail as well), they must be kept on a leash and all dog waste must be cleaned up. Bags are available in various locations courtesy of the Boyertown Kiwanis. Please note that the bathrooms in the park are closed unless there is a park event. However, the family/handicapped bathroom is available during park hours. Next meeting is Tuesday, April 20.
