YO Audition Requirements 2015-2016
Acceptance into the YO is by audition. Requirements are as follows:




Solo work of the student’s choice, an excerpt about two minutes in length
Required orchestral excerpts, provided by BSYO
Scales and arpeggios
Sightreading
SCALES
Winds and Brass
 Each student will be asked to perform ascending and descending scales and arpeggios from
memory. They shall include the chromatic scale beginning on a note of the student’s choosing and
one major scale selected from the following keys: C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A, Ab, E.
 Scales should be played two octaves.
Strings
 Each student will be asked to perform ascending and descending scales and arpeggios from
memory, as listed below:
Violin
Major & Melodic Minor – 2 octaves
Major & Melodic Minor – 3 octaves
Chromatic – 2 octaves
Chromatic – 3 octaves

PERCUSSION
Students auditioning on percussion should prepare the following:
 Mallet solo
 Required orchestral excerpts, provided by BSYO
 Be able to demonstrate ability on bass drum, cymbals, and timpani tuning
HARP
Students auditioning on harp should prepare the following:
