Model based Development of a new method for multicomponent
separation of biomolecules by liquid-liquid Chromatography
Liquid-liquid chromatography is a new separation technology for isolation, purification and
separation of natural products. The focus here is on pharmaceutical components,
phytopharmaceuticals, plant extracts, flavourings, fragrances and pigments for the use in
pharmaceutical industry, food- and beverage industry, and cosmetic industry.
In liquid-liquid chromatography, systems with two liquid phases in equilibrium are used to
separate target substances from a mixture. In our group we study the field of sequential
centrifugal partition chromatography, sCPC, a new continuous liquid-liquid
chromatographic process. In sCPC unit, the feed mixture is introduced continuously and the
products are alternately collected.
The objective of this work is to extend the development of a new method for the separation
of multicomponent mixtures. Therefore, the influence of different process parameters has to
be investigated with model mixtures and characterized for industrial application.
Methods and devices that will
be used include:
- Centrifugal partition chromatography
(CPC/sCPC)
- High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- UV-vis Spectroscopy

Requirements:
You should be interested in separation processes and have experience in laboratory work. You will get the
chance to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about preparative liquid chromatography.
Start: April 2015
