The Good Festival Guide
We have about one month now to this year’s
Buxton Flower Festival so here’s some
suggestions and an insight which may whet
your appetite….
The Buxton Flower Festival has justly built an
excellent reputation over the last 52 years.
Since 1963 the festival has displayed the most
creative, stunning and ingenious floral displays
and by doing so gained a reputation across the
county. This year is set to offer even more
creative interpretations with the theme of
“That’s Entertainment”.
So in true travelogue style, here are 6
suggestions to make your weekend really
enjoyable:
1) Bring a friend. Spoil yourselves with morning
coffee & luxury cake, by taking lunch or by
luxuriating in high tea… all available at the
Festival Café.
2) Book Buff? Then browse the book stall, you
never know when that next first edition will
pop-up….
3) Invite the family. When was the last time
they came over? Let them enjoy our lovely
village and fabulous floral displays. Make this
the opportunity.
4) Introduce someone to the joy of flowers,
their language and the possibilities they offer.
5) Know someone new to the area? This is the
opportunity to bring them along to meet new
people. Make them feel really welcome.

By now we will have had a few practice rollups and
played the first two league matches of the season
against Spixworth and Blofield.
If anyone is interested in playing outdoor bowls
until the end of August why not contact me for

‘Something beginning with N’ was won by Ann
Turner with ‘Nissa’ a Norwegian doll, and Vereen
Marcer with a porcelain Nuthatch.
At our next meeting on Thursday 14 May we will be
discussing this year’s Resolution. The competition
is ‘Something beginning with O’.
We meet on the 2nd Thursday each month at 7-30
in Buxton Village Hall and visitors and new
members are always most welcome. We look
forward to seeing you.
On Wednesday evenings [7pm] and some Sunday
afternoons [3pm] we have a roll-up for members &
taster sessions for beginners as new members are
always warmly welcome.
As the Green is in the centre of Buxton, next to the
Village Hall, we feel that it should be used by
anyone who is interested, therefore for anyone
wishing to play, the first few times are free and
then £2.50 a session; under 18s and students are
free [bowls can be provided but please wear
trainers or flat soled shoes ].

BUXTON & DISTRICT W I
Mary Shepperd welcomed everyone to our April
meeting. Two of our members have been allocated
tickets to the Buckingham Palace Garden party
being held to commemorate the WI’s Centenary.
Our Ten Pin Bowling team was unfortunately
beaten in the semi final against Mattishall, but
nevertheless they had enjoyed a very pleasant
afternoon with their hosts.
Tickets are now available for our Tea Party with
Hat Demonstration by Margaret Sims, in the Village
Hall on 27 May. The proceeds will be shared
between the WI and Buxton Village Hall.
Our next Lunch Club get-together will be at The
Plough, Marsham on Friday 24 April.
Gwen and Sallie had attended the Norfolk WI
Annual Meeting in St Andrews Hall, and Gwen
gave her report on the day’s events. One of the
speakers was Eric Knowles, known to most of us
from The Antiques Roadshow, and his interesting
and amusing talk had received an enthusiastic
reception from the audience.
Mary then introduced Andrew Brogan who spoke
and showed slides of his Exotic Garden at
Henstead. He had created the garden from scratch
and it is now a mature garden full of the sort of
plants we normally associate with a milder climate
than that of East Anglia, but they seem to thrive
there. It is open to the public on Wednesdays
through the summer. He was thanked on behalf of
the members by Sallie Marshall. The competition
How wonderful to return to work after the Easter
Break, to see the sun shining, and feel the warmer
air. My little bungalow will be ablaze with colour
when the summer arrives as I have spent many
hours during the break ‘planting’ marigolds,
pansies, geraniums and stocks!
During the summer months there are many
opportunities for families to join us in school, and
share their child’s learning. These days are the
highlight of our term; supporting parents in sharing
their child’s learning is a privilege. The more
parents understand how we, as a school, work, the
more they support our approach in educating and
nurturing their child.
At the end of last term we saw another really busy
time for the children . . . . fun too though!! We had
our annual Easter Bonnet (or ‘Hat’ – for the boys!!)
Parade. This is a wonderful morning where the
children show off their amazing
creations by modelling their
‘Creations’ on a catwalk. It is
becoming a bit of a tradition for the
school now!! Mr Beale won the
Staff Section – with a lovely birds
nest number!! Each class had a winner – what a
difficult decision that was!
The Parade is followed by the annual
Easter Egg Hunt. Each year we ask
the Easter Bunny to visit an deliver
eggs for our wonderful
children.
He did not
disappoint this year,
delivering 182 eggs –
one for each child! This is a lovely
consolation prize for those who did not
win the Easter Bonnet Competition –
everyone goes home with chocolate!
Finally, the term ends with a special Easter Service
in Church. The older children retell and act out the
events of Holy Week, all children join in the singing.
Our families fill the church, which is a lovely sight.
This is a wonderful way to end the term, with the
Easter celebrations reminding children of the
significance of Easter to Christians.

As well as the many events planned for the term,
we will be having a little change of staff!! Mrs
Scrivens leaves us on 19th June to start her
maternity leave, and Miss Cubitt leaves us on 22nd
May to take up her Assistant Headship post in
West Sussex. They will both be greatly missed.
Mrs Hannah Simpson will be joining our super year
1’s to ‘take up the reigns’ from Mrs Scrivens, and
Mrs Tanya Manners (a current Teacher Trainee
with us) will take our wonderful year 6’s to the end
of term, when Miss Cubitt leaves. Change can be
unsettling, but it is good too; Miss Cubitt so
deserves her promotion, and Mr and Mrs Scrivens
are so excited about the birth of her first child. On
a personal note, I am delighted that we are to be
joined by two such talented and dedicated
teachers.

Quick-play Chess at
Wide Sky Aylsham Festival
Aylsham chess players David Owen and Jonathan
Reeve are again organising a chess tournament as
part of this year’s Wide Sky Aylsham Festival. The
tournament is being held on Saturday 23rd May
(from 11.00am to 4.00pm) and will hopefully build
on last year’s successful event. Aylsham & District
Ex-Service & Social Club are kindly providing the
venue.
David and Jonathan hope the event will encourage
new and returning adult players to take part in a not
too serious competition. The tournament is open to
chess players with an ECF (English Chess
Federation) grade of up to 170 or no grade at all.
The tournament will consist of 5 rounds of 40 min
games. There is a £12.50 entry fee (£15 after 1st
May) which pays for a light buffet and gives
competitors the chance to win one of several
trophies.

BUXTON PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
The club have been busy and we are still attracting
new members to our warm and friendly group. We
have a lovely Summer to look forward to with lots of
inspiration from club nights and competitions and a
trip out to Blakeney for a photoshoot.
March brought us our first competition. The theme
was “Split Second”. There were some interesting
interpretations and as always plenty of stunning
images. Judge Brian Collins was impressed with
the standard of the images and awarded First
Place to Brian Marcer with Richard Powell a close
second and Rob Wright an even closer third place
with only half a point between him and Richard.
The theme of another club evening was AV’s which
was presented by club members Malcolm and
Jenny Gee and Brian Harvey. Malcolm and Jenny
shared with us a range of landscapes and images
of their travels spanning almost 60 years and an
AV of Cambridge which contained images mostly
taken in the 1960s.
In the second half Brian
showed us his more creative side using images
that were kaleidoscopic and colourful in their
presentation and were very thought provoking.
We had a very good result at our annual Tripod
battle at Wymondham. While we didn’t win we did
hold our own against Wymondham, who have
dominated this event over the past few years, and
ended up only one point behind them.
Our first club night in April brought us music
photographer Al Pulford. Al shared the huge range
of his work and talked about his experiences as a
music photographer. Rock photography is Al’s
main genre taken from gigs and festivals around
the world. Al has an exciting catalogue of images
and has been published in many magazines and in
the media.
So, as you can see, there is always something
interesting happening at the club. If you are
curious please feel free to just turn up one evening.
It would be good to see you there and you will
always be made welcome.

Buxton Village Sale
Sunday 28th June, 10am onwards This has been a great success year on year, raising a huge amount for local charities. This year at least half of our monies will be split between Priscilla Bacon Lodge (adult hospice) and Quidenham Hospice Nook Project (children's hospice family centre). We hope people will hold stalls at their homes all over the village, with a charge of £6 per house to go on the map. You get to keep all your profits. There will be spaces at the Village Hall outside, and if weather is poor we can accommodate some in the hall. We are serving drinks, bacon butties and cakes at the Hall so we ask please that others don't serve drinks and food other than preserves or small volumes of homemade cakes etc as we want to raise as much as possible.
