Program Brief:
Jaipur: Jaipur is the state capital of Rajasthan and owes its name, planning and foundation
to the Maharaja Jai Singh II. In 1727, Jai Singh decided to move from his hillside fortress at
Amber to the plains, and thus Jaipur was conceived. It is also know as the "Pink City",
derived from the pink painted (the color of hospitality, for the 1853 visit of Prince Albert)
sandstone from which the buildings in the old walled city are constructed.
Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds, built in 1799. Part of a huge complex, it overlooks one of
Jaipur’s main streets and was originally constructed to offer women of the court a vantage
point, behind stone-carved screens, from which to watch the goings-on in the bazaar and
the streets.
Seven miles outside the city in the rugged hills that surround Jaipur is the magnificent
Amber Fort. A painted elephant will take you up to the fort through its huge gateways and
pillared pavilions. This Rajput Fortress/Palace was constructed from 1592 by Raja Man Singh
II, and is a superb example of Rajput architecture.
Departing Amber, visit the well restored Anokhi Haveli which is home to the Museum of
Hand Printing, a remarkable display of a private collection of hand crafted textiles.
In the afternoon, explore the old city of Jaipur, popularly known as the “Pink City” because
of the rose coloured wash that adorns most buildings in the old quarter.
Jodhpur: Jodhpur lies in the heart of Rajasthan, standing on the eastern edge of the Thar
Desert & acting as a window to a wonderful world of sand and stone. In 1459 Rao Jodha
(after whom the city is named - was the 15th of the Rathore dynasty, that held sway over
this region – Marwar: the land of death, from 13th to 20th century) made it home of his clan.
If Jaipur is characterized by bustling gaiety and Udaipur (Mewar) by romantic nostalgia,
The mighty, massive & historic 15th Mehrangarh classic Rajput Fort [Citadel of the Sun] in
burnished red sandstone stands aloof in splendour on a perpendicular cliff 400 feet above
the city of Jodhpur, dominating & invincible and yet infused with a strange and beckoning
haunting beauty. It has a protective stonewall with a well–fortified city within.
Jodhpur has an interesting market. The old city throbs with activity and is fascinating place
with 8 entry gates around its periphery. The colorful bazaar near Clock Tower is a maze of
winding, narrow and crisscrossing streets dotted with tiny shops selling exquisite Rajasthani
wares.
Afternoon visit to a Bishnoi village. It offers a rare glimpse into the rich cultural essence of
rural India and abundant wild life of the area. Memorable moments of great desert
landscape will fascinate you as you drive through the countryside. Bishnois are the
protectors of nature’s flora and fauna for five centuries and arguably the world first
ecologists. Black buck and antelopes are considered sacred
Udaipur: The Jain temples of Ranakpur are situated in the picturesque valley of Aravalli. The
central temple, built in 1439, is dedicated to Adinathji. Famed for the exquisite sandstone
carvings it's 29 halls are supported by 1444 individually carved pillars, of which no two are
alike.
The Citys centerpiece is the cavernous City Palace, actually a series of interconnecting
palaces that reveal several immaculate layers of construction, paintings and mosaics on
inside walls, and airy gardens and balconies. At the adjacent Fateh Prakash, view the Grand
Durbar Hall where the nobility once assembled, and the Crystal Gallery that displays the
Maharana’s personal collection. Close by is the Mahrana’s collection of a variety of vintage
automobiles.
Late afternoon, a motorboat cruise on Lake Pichola provides views of the lakeside panorama
and includes a visit to Jagmandir Island, where you view the elegant remains of a former
palace.
Nagda, the first capital of Bappa Rawal, founder of Sisodia dynasty dates from the 6th century
AD, and contains exquisitely carved Sas Bahu temples, which are among the most beautiful
ancient temples of Rajasthan.
