Dorothy Roberts Michael J. Timo James J. Nolan Course Descriptions Camp Sachem is offered for all Sachem students entering grades 1 through 8 as of September 2015. The full day elementary program and middle school program will start at 8:30 A.M. and end at 3:30 P.M. Recreational Classes All Elementary Students will participate in these four recreational classes daily: Project Adventure, Arts and Crafts, Music, and Computer Lab. Elementary Enrichment Classes for 2015 GRADES 1 & 2: Soaring Above the Clouds - Discover the wonders of flying as you build your own planes and perform test flights. Cook with a Book - Cuddle up with picture books and cook. Here you will make wonderful treats that relate to great literature. Lego World - Learn about skyscrapers, vehicles, buildings and sculptures as you create a world out of Legos. Book Creators - Do you love poems, writing fantasy stories and writing about your experiences? Students will become authors and illustrators as they create their own picture books. Junior Puppeteers - Create puppets and scripts to perform your own play. Math Madness - Explore exciting math games as students work with number patterns, facts, counting, geometric shapes and other great math concepts. Art Appreciation - Do you love art and want to be an artist? Explore different artists as you create beautiful and wonderful art projects. Crafty Tales - Students will enjoy listening to classic and modern fairy tales and creating projects to go with them. Dino World – Wanted: Jr. Paleontologists to travel back in time about 230 million years and learn about the largest creatures from the Prehistoric Age. Explore dinosaur eggs, study fossils, go on archeological digs and much more. GRADES 3 & 4 Explore the Universe - Explore the Solar System as you learn about stars, planets, black holes and the sun. Chef School - Explore ingredients and develop recipes as you learn the magic of cooking. PLEASE NOTE: CLASSES ARE CONTINGENT UPON ENROLLMENT Elementary Enrichment Classes for 2015 continued: GRADES 3 & 4 (continued) Junior Scientists - Learn about chemistry as you make exciting concoctions such as Silly Slime, Zoom Glue and Flubber. Students will also take part in dazzling science experiments. Kites in the Classroom - Soar through the clouds with your own, crafted kites. Students will build and fly different types of kites. Meteorology - Become meteorologists and create your own natural disasters. Students will learn to forecast the weather and study tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis and thunderstorms. Summer Book Club - Relax with a book and read together. Students will read chapter books and create crafts connecting to their novels. Lego World 2 - Do you enjoy building with Legos? In Lego World 2, students will work as a team to make larger more intricate Lego creations such as an airport, city corner, fireboat, and race car track! Snip! Snap! Let’s Scrap it! - Create your very own, custom scrapbook to organize your favorite family memories! For this class, please have your child bring in pictures, stickers or any other memory items that can be cut, glued and used to decorate your child’s book. Students will be required to supply scrapbook/binder for this course. Paper Maché - Do you love to create sculptures or work in 3-D? In this class students will learn how to plan in 3-dimesions, build a maquette and create sculptures with paper maché! Bring your creativity and a smock! GRADE 5 Junior Detectives - Love Clue? Do you want to solve mysteries? Students will learn the tricks of top detectives as they study evidence and solve crimes. Jewelry Craftsmen - Learn the mechanics of jewelry making as you make necklaces and bracelets. Sweet Shoppe - Ever wonder how taffy and rock candy was made? Learn the science behind making delicious sweets and candies, while creating them. Summer Enrichment Newspaper - Extra, Extra Read All About It! We are looking for writers to take pictures and develop articles for our Summer Enrichment Newspaper. Students will create a newspaper about all the exciting classes in our summer program. Creative Technology - Students will interact with Smart Boards, develop Power Point presentations and explore technology in the classroom. PLEASE NOTE: CLASSES ARE CONTINGENT UPON ENROLLMENT Elementary Enrichment Classes for 2015 continued: GRADES 5 (continued) Digital Photography - Use digital cameras to capture the beauties of the world and the friendly faces around camp in this exciting course. Students will work with Photo Story to create photo albums and picture frames. A personal flash drive is necessary to save digital projects. Rocketeers - 3, 2, 1 Lift Off! Design and fly your own rocket as you learn about the inner workings of rockets. Robotics - Students will create and control their own robot using LEGO Mindstroms NXT technology. Special Moments Scrapbooking: Create simple and beautiful keepsakes that you will treasure for years to come. Learn how to organize your photos and create a scrapbook. Bring your favorite snapshots, stickers or any other memory items that can be cut, glued and used to decorate your child’s book. Students will be required to supply scrapbook/binder for this course. Middle School Recreational Classes Middle School students will select two recreational classes to take each day. Project Adventure: Learn to work as a team, build confidence, and use leadership skills to solve problems physically and academically Music: Make beautiful music through singing and using small instruments. Art: Create your work unique works of art in the Camp Sachem art studio. Computer Lab: Use technology each day to discover something new and exciting. Middle School Enrichment Classes for 2015: Grade 6, 7, & 8 Top Chef: Students will learn the cooking skills necessary to create delicious foods each day. Sports Clinics: Do you like soccer, basketball, baseball, and other sports? If so, then this is the class for you. Students will learn new techniques and practice skills to become even better athletes. Interactive Exercise: In this interactive class, students will participate in the exciting dance game Idance, learn choreography through Zumba and work on their balance and flexibility through Yoga. The Middle School Survivor’s Guide: Are you ready to survive middle school? Middle School is a big step. Learn how to make the most of your time as a 6, 7, or 8 grader in this hands on class. Jr. Broadcasters: Be a part of our Camp Sachem News Team. Students will learn to write, film, edit and produce a digital newscast. The Science Laboratory: Students will use hands-on projects to explore the exciting world inside our Science Laboratory! Language Club: Learn new languages such as Spanish, French, and even Sign Language! Creative Technology: Students will interact with Smart Boards, develop Power Point presentations and explore technology in the classroom. Robotics: Students will create and control their own robot using Lego Mindstorms NXT technology. Drama: Do you enjoy being on stage? In our Drama class you will perform, sing and dance in a play. Learn how to make the Middle School Enrichment Classes for 2015 (continued): Grade 6, 7, & 8 (continued) Stage Crew: Do you like the idea of drama but don’t want to be onstage? If so, then stage crew is the place for you. Crew members will work with the Drama Class to create props, costumes, and lighting. Camp Sachem Newspaper: Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Be a part of the Sachem Heat news staff. Interview students and faculty, photograph events, and write about the exciting adventures happening at Camp Sachem. Babysitter’s Certification: Students will learn how to interact and care for younger children, learn basic first aid, and will be certified in CPR. Great for older siblings and future babysitters! Creative Coding: A fun and easy introduction to computer programming. Students will explore the basic concept of computer coding and will work their way up to more advanced skills, such as coding numbers through interactive games and lessons. No experience necessary! Special Moment Scrapbooking: Create simple and beautiful keepsakes that you will treasure for years to come. Learn how to organize your photos and create a scrapbook. Water World: Explore the world of water through exciting experiments and fun activities. Learn about how important water is and how vital it is to our environment. Don’t be afraid to get wet! Interactive Investigators: Calling all investigators! Solve the camp mystery by learning how to collect and analyze evidence.
