JUNE/JULY 2015 - Carteret Street United Methodist Church
JUNE/JULY 2015
After 40 Years of Ministry Susan is Retiring
Her last Sunday here at Carteret Street United Methodist
Church will be June 14th. Please join us for a reception
honoring Susan following the 10am worship service.
Faithful Living – Faithful Giving
For 49 years Floyd Hill was a faithful member of Carteret
Street United Methodist Church. His death on March 31, 2015
left a real void in the hearts of his family, friends and our
church family. He endeared himself to so many through the
years with his kind and gracious nature, his selfless generosity
and his delightful sense of humor. During those 49 years, he
was faithful in his attendance at worship and Sunday School
and served in a number of capacities from Administrative
Board Chair to coaching young people in basketball. Indeed,
his wife Carolyn and their children Lynn and Kin have been a
vital part of our church family. Carolyn died on December 13,
2008.
Floyd’s commitment to Carteret Street did not end at his death
as we were informed by his children Lynn and Kin that he left
a bequest to our congregation. On May 26, 2015, our Church
Council accepted the gift of $100,000 for our elevator fund.
Additionally, they voted to name the elevator “The
Carolyn and Floyd Hill Elevator.” Carolyn and Floyd did not
live extravagantly but they certainly lived faithfully. We are
truly grateful for what they meant to our congregation and for
their continued influence. May their lives be an example to
each of us as to what it means to follow Jesus and commit
ourselves to His work.
Gifts are still needed for our Elevator Fund but we are a lot
closer to realizing this much needed addition to our ministry.
We are grateful for your continued support.
Blessings,
Welcome to Frank Lybrand and Travis Pearson
The Staff Parish Relations Committee has been informed that
the Reverend Frank Lybrand will be appointed to CSUMC on
June 28th. Frank is a native of Union, SC. He is married to
Sherry and they have two children, Taylor and Torey. Frank
graduated from Wofford College and Erskine Theological
Seminary. He is coming to us from St. Paul UMC in
Spartanburg, SC.
Travis Pearson will be appointed to CSUMC as Associate
Pastor with responsibilities in the areas of children and youth
ministry. Travis grew up in Aiken, South Carolina where he
attended St. John’s United Methodist Church. In 2010, Travis
graduated from the University of South Carolina and Asbury
Theological Seminary in 2015. Becky and Travis were
married in 2012.
A reception to honor Frank and Travis and their families will
be held following the 10am worship service on June 28th.

Garden Shop 2015 Fall Bazaar
Tips for June and July
During June and July you need to make sure that your
plants are watered often and provided periodic feeding. Hot
summer days and warm nights dehydrate plants and cause
root and foliage damage.
Periodic fertilization will green-up your plants, help root
growth, and allow your plants to survive the hot summer
days of coastal Carolina.
June and July are not good months for re-potting or
propagation of plants. Wait until late August or early
September and you will still have great plants to donate to
our 2015 Garden Shop in mid-October.
If you have any questions, call Jerry Ashmore, 785-3848 or
521-4580 or e-mail ([email protected]).
HAPPY GARDENING EVERYONE!
The Holy Land - April 2016
There will be a meeting on Sunday, June 7th after the 10am
worship service in the fellowship hall for all those who are
interested in going to the Holy Land in April 2016 with EO
(Educational Opportunities). Tour hosts Margey and Terry
Pfeiffer will present a program on what we will see. Lunch
provided.

Thank You
The UMM would like to thank those who helped make the our
BBQ meal an overwhelming success. We served almost 500
meals and raised money to support the missions of CSUMC.
Our thanks to:
Members who supported our efforts by purchasing tickets
for a great BBQ meal.
The businesses to which we delivered almost 300 meals.
Ellen Fabian for her help in printing tickets and as always
for her great administrative support.
Tom and Marie Lewis of Alvin Ord’s Sandwich Shop for
providing the BBQ and hash.
The UMW who helped with meal prep and serving.
Karen Wilson who provided such exceptional help—she’s
amazing!!
The UMM who demonstrated great fellowship and
teamwork.
Frank Hamilton, who lead the effort for the UMM.
American Red Cross Blood Drive
The April Blood Drive helped over 60 people in need of blood.
Thanks to the United Methodist Women, the Chocolate Tree,
Pepsi of Beaufort, Chick-fil-A, and Publix for their continued
support of our Red Cross blood drives.
American Red Cross blood is distributed anywhere blood can
save lives. The next blood drive is June 4th in the CSUMC
Fellowship Hall from 12 - 6PM.
It is extremely helpful if donors would make an appointment;
call 1-866-611-7137 or log onto www.redcrossblood.org. For
the 1-866 number, after you get an answer press option 2
for a Savannah-based operator to make your appointment.
For the web site, you must register the first time and then for
subsequent appointments, you just log on with your user
name and PIN and make an appointment.
For questions, please call Merle Hoagland (522-2073) or
e-mail [email protected].
Church Bus
As this is written, a number of our Gray Blades are loading
up our Church Bus for a trip to Charleston where they will
enjoy a day of Christian Fellowship. This is just one
example of the many times various groups of children, youth
and adults have used the bus for special times of fellowship
and spiritual renewal. It has been a vital tool for our
ministry.
As many of you may know, the lease on our church bus
expires at the end of June. On May 26, 2015, our Church
Council voted unanimously to purchase a new bus. This will
require us to borrow approximately $40,000.
JUNE/JULY 2015
Summer Worship at CSUMC
Gathering together for worship is a basic part of our
Christian life. Worship is central to what we do as a
church so we hope that you make it a priority in your life.
There are many people who make it possible for us to
have a variety of worship experiences that speak to those
who gather. They include our worship committee, the
altar guild, communion stewards and servers, usher and
greeters, acolytes and crucifers, carillon choir and chancel
choir. Many work “behind the scenes” so we say a thank
you to all.
Our Worship Committee believes that changing our
worship times during the months of June, July and August
will enhance our worship. This will allow us as to gather
as congregation and get to know each other better. Also,
the vibrancy of a full congregation is spiritually uplifting.
Beginning on June 7, 2015, Sunday School will
begin at 9:00 am and Worship at 10:00 am. Our
regular schedule will resume on September 6, 2015. We
hope and pray that your commitment to Sunday School
and Worship will help you adjust to this new time.
Annual Conference
The 2015 Session of the South Carolina Annual Conference
of the United Methodist Church will be held on June 7 - 11,

Laity Sunday, June 21, 2015
Carteret Street is blessed to have a number of people with a
variety of gifts. Laity Sunday is a day set aside to celebrate
the ministry of all Christians. John Wesley, the father of
Methodism, believed strongly in the priesthood of all
believers. Here at Carteret Street, we are blessed with strong
lay leadership and a multitude of individuals who are faithful
and committed to the task of ministry.
Our Lay Leader, Courtney Worrell will preach at both
Services on June 21st. Other members of our congregation
will be participating.
