Dear Parents and Caregivers
The start of this term has been very special, with the whole school community
getting behind the ANZAC Day commemorations. On our school web site
www.carterton.school.nz there are some photos of the events at school. Our
ANZAC assembly on Friday was amazing. The children contributed a lot to the
assembly and our special guests were all very impressed by the respect and pride
the Carterton School students demonstrated. Our special guests were Ron Mark,
MP, who spoke about what ANZAC Day means to him; Major Dean Rennie from
the army, who shared the Defence Force speech for ANZAC Day; Chief Petty
Officer Len Burland, who played a big part in setting up our Field of
Remembrance and worked with classes last week; Fred Johnson, Carterton RSA
Vice president, who read The Ode; Andy Lowe, parent of James ex Army; Jill
Greathead, representing Carterton Council. Our very very special guest was 93
year old Sgt Epineha Ratapu, who served with the Maori Battalion and embarked
with the 7th reinforcements, he enlisted when he was only 16 years old. Sgt Ratapu
is great grandfather of Shiloh Cayless in Room 9.
Thank you to the families and whanau who attended the assembly and morning tea,
especially thanks to Nikki King who was our resident Last Post player last week. It
was wonderful to see so many people at the Carterton ANZAC parade on Saturday
too. Learning about ANZAC is continuing this week, so do feel free to come in and
see what is happening.
SPORTS ROUND UP!
The Term 2 sports teams are up and running, with practices being held before
school and during break times. If you are able / wiling to come into school at any
time to support our sports players with an extra game or practice (especially during
lunch time 12.15-12.45pm) please get in touch (ring the office). We have Rippa
rugby, rugby, netball, basketball and harriers / cross country teams.
Basketball for Years 7&8 starts tomorrow with our Year 8 team (Carterton 1)
playing at 4.00pm at Kuranui College against Martinborough. Our years 7s have a
bye this week.
Miniball for Year 5 & 6s will start next term.
Rugby Sevens - This event is now being held on Thursday 30 April, due to bad
weather today. Thanks to Karl Robinson who has been coaching our two teams.
We are lucky to have a great support from our whanau whom are transporting our
teams to Greytown.
Harriers - This annual Wairarapa Schools event is being held at Solway
Showgrounds on Sunday 10 May. We will hold our school run, tomorrow,
Wednesday 29 April after interval. This run will be for year 4-8 students. The
course will be run around Carrington park path. 2km for years 4-6 & 3km for years
7-8. Please ensure your child has suitable running attire, (shorts, running shoes)
Teacher Aide position vacancy. (This position has been re advertised.) To work
with a Year 7 autistic student 4.5 days a week. Apply in writing with covering letter,

Hurricanes VS Chiefs Development game and opening of Memorial Park.
The Memorial Park in Masterton has been upgraded and as part of the
development game, our kapahaka and Ākonga Māori rōpu have been invited to
perform the Wairarapa haka with MIS and Chanel college at the opening. This is
being organised by Paora Ammunsen, Chairman of the Wairarapa Bush Rugby
Football Union. We will meet at the park at Memorial Park at 6.30 to have a quick
practice with the other schools, before the haka is performed at the opening
speeches and welcome.
We are also hoping that as many of us from Ngati Mana (our Akonga Māori
classes) are able to join in the fun and celebration. We are relying on whanau/
parents for transportation to and from the game. If you only wish to stay for the
haka, and then leave….there is no obligation to stay for the game. If you are staying
for the game, you will need to be responsible for your own tamariki – children are
free. The tamariki are to wear their Carterton School uniform.

Relief Teacher Aides needed! From time to time we need cover for our teacher
aides who work in class and / or alongside students who need extra support. This
may be for part of a day, a full day or sometimes longer. If you are interested in
being on our 'Relief Teacher Aide' list please contact me either by phone or
[email protected] The job will require a Police Vet check. Thank you!
Ākonga Māori: Ngati Mana: We have been very fortunate to have the opportunity
to employ a Kaiarahi Reo (Teacher Aide fluent in Te Reo Māori) to work mainly in
Rūma Iwa and Rūma Tekau, for 15 hours a week. The Board of Trustees & Ministry
of Education special funding has allowed us to appoint Hera Taylor. We are
extremely grateful that they are encouraging and supporting Te Reo Māori
Our school Field of Remembrance will be in place until Monday 4 May.
Did you know Carterton School has a 'Newcomers Club'? Over their first month or
two at school new children meet together with Wendy Taylor, our DP, and other
students who have been at school for a while. We help to settle new children into
routines, answer any questions, go over our 3Rs and introduce them to other
people in the school. Welcome to our new families! Keep in touch and don't forget
you are welcome in class at any time!

are so fortunate to have her working with us.
We are having a Pōwhiri to welcome Hera to our Kura tomorrow Wednesday
29th April, at 9am in the school hall. You are all most welcome to come and join
us for this special occasion. We will be having a morning tea together
afterwards, and we ask if each whanau can please bring a plate of kai for our

Road Safety Week 2015 is happening from the 4th of May until the 10th of May.
The week will coincide with the UN Global Road Safety Week. The theme is Look
out for kids, focusing on keeping our most vulnerable road users, children, safe.
One key message for this week is to drivers: We are asking drivers to slow down
around schools and in communities and keep attention on the task of driving and
not to be distracted.
Safety around the roads. Drop off and pick up times can get hectic around every
school. Please keep your eyes open for children at those times. Please do not use
the double gates onto the driveway as a pedestrian access to/from school - these
gates open onto what is actually a road. Thanks! The small gate into school from
Holloway Street does not have a clip on it because it has been left open several
times during the day - we must keep that gate closed to keep children in the
grounds and safe.
SCOOTER DAYS are now Monday, Wednesday and Friday at school.
School Lunches – Café Istanbul is closed until 24 May. Therefore, there will be
NO SCHOOL LUNCHES available until Tuesday 26 May.
Music lessons will start this week. If you would like your child to attend guitar or
piano lessons contact Maureen Ashby on 379 7890.
Book Club 3 issued today. All orders to Mr O’Connell in Room 8 by Friday 8
March. Please use an old envelope or plastic bag.
The Dental Bus will be here from Monday 4 May.
Last term we raised $300 from our mufti day to support the people of Vanuatu after
their country was devastated by cyclone Pam. We have sent a cheque to the Red
Cross and asked that it be allocated to their Cyclone Pam appeal. Thanks to
everyone who sent along a gold coin!

COMMUNITY NEWS:
Howard Booth Squash Club - Open Evening - Friday 1 May 6pm– 8pm at
Howard Booth Park, Belvedere Rd, Carterton. Come along and check out our upgraded facilities. We have racquets available you can use. Memberships are
available from as little as $80. Club nights are running on both Wednesday and
Friday nights through winter.
Carterton School is hosting a Bully Free Me evening for parents and caregivers on
Thursday 7 May in our school hall. Doors open at 6.30pm with the presentation
from 7-8.15 pm, followed by refreshments. The presentation includes
understanding bullying and violence, developing resilience to bullying, the impacts
of bullying on the brain, a parent’s experience of bullying and cybersafety. For

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a Youth mentoring Service in the Wairarapa that is
now looking for volunteer mentors and children who would benefit from some extra
one to one attention that our mentors have to offer. We match children and young
people aged 6 through to 18 with mentors in professionally supported one-to-one
relationships and the best matches are made when children are between 6 to 13
years. The young people served by the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme are
among New Zealand’s most vulnerable.
Be a Big Brother or Big Sister - Volunteering is fun! If you like to have fun—and
really, who doesn’t?—then being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most
enjoyable and rewarding things you’ll ever do. As a Mentor, you get to be a kid
again for a couple of hours every month. All you have to do is be a friend to one of
our fun-loving kids. Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is simple, too. You and your
“Little Brother” or “Little Sister” can do things that you already enjoy doing, eg
kicking a ball, playing a board game, doing crafts, hanging out, eating and talking
