Tropical and Infectious Diseases Impacting Texas
Tropical & Infectious Diseases Impacting Texas Adult & Pediatric Issues April 24-25, 2015 Education Service Center, R2 209 N. Water Street Corpus Christi, Texas Course Director: Scott Lillibridge, M.D. Educational Need and Program Goal What do you get when you combine a warm, tropical climate and extreme impoverished conditions? A thriving environment for what are known as tropical diseases. While these diseases have traditionally been endemic in nature to the tropical regions, they are now posing a threat to domestic soil. New evidence indicates that the Gulf Coast of the Southern U.S. is under increasing threat from diseases thought previously to affect only developing countries. The term tropical diseases is a misnomer; these are diseases of poverty. Many of these tropical infections tend to be chronic, debilitating conditions. Individuals affected by these diseases can become too ill to work, and children can experience a reduction in cognition, which leads to a vicious continuing cycle of poverty and associated conditions for these individuals. Various factors, including the large immigrant population and the growing number of families living under the poverty level in substandard conditions, can be attributed to the emergence of these diseases seen in Texas. Physicians and other health professionals need to be able to identify the symptoms of these diseases, as well as treat them, since they can mimic other conditions and symptoms that are not traditional diagnoses found in the U.S. Target Audience This activity is designated for primary care, family practice, pediatric and infectious disease physicians; nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists. Educational Methods The format will consist of Power Point assisted lectures, each followed by a brief question and answer session. One panel discussion. Accreditation Statements Physicians The Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Coastal Bend Health Education Center (CBHEC) is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
