Vacancy Announcement Senior Environmental and Social Consultant Post of Duty: Washington D.C. Job Posting Number: DVE-01/15 (Consultant) The Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, promotes private-sector development in Latin America and the Caribbean with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Development Effectiveness Division of the IIC is seeking a Senior Environmental and Social Specialist for a one-year consultancy to perform core environmental and social safeguards activities. Main Responsibilities Review and appraise proposed IIC investments for compliance with the IIC Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy; Work with other team members and with IIC clients to define steps necessary to fill any compliance gaps encountered; Identify opportunities to add value proactively—beyond standard risk- and impact-mitigation responses; communicate effectively with colleagues and clients to achieve commitments to act upon these opportunities; Formulate recommendations and requirements for client action and incorporate these into the documentation necessary to facilitate financing (i.e., public disclosure documents, relevant sections of reports to be submitted to the Board of Directors, and loan agreements); Monitor the environmental and social performance of select operations in the IIC portfolio; Work with clients and the IIC’s Technical Assistance and Strategic Partnerships Division to mobilize technical and financial support for clients to improve the environmental and social outcomes of their operations. Qualifications Education: Master’s degree in environmental sciences, natural resource management, environmental engineering, or other relevant field. Experience and skills: Minimum of eight years of relevant experience in environmental and social risk assessment and management and demonstrated track record of working on these issues with private firms. Demonstrated experience leading the effective application of good practices standards typically used by multilateral development banks, particularly the International Finance Corporation’s Performance Standards, and the IDB Environmental and Safeguards Compliance Policy. Experience developing new, or assessing the quality of existing safeguards instruments (environmental and social impact assessments, environmental and social management plans, etc.). Languages: Excellent command of Spanish and English required (Portuguese and/or French desirable). Candidates must be citizens of an IIC member country. Availability to travel frequently to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
