CGPA Board Announces Janice Popp's Departure
Janice Popp MSW, RSW
A longstanding member of CGPA, Janice’s group therapy work historically
was focused on long-term, unstructured psychodynamic group therapy with
adolescents. In the past ten years, she has taken her knowledge of groups
into the organizational realm with a focus on inter-organizational networks
and collaborative partnerships. She is currently leading the development and
implementation of a regional collaborative service delivery model designed to
provide supports and services to children, youth and families in Calgary and
area. Janice is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Social
Work at the University of Calgary.

Regional News
Prince George, BC
Greetings from the North! The Prince George CGPA Chapter will be offering
an Interpersonal Process Group in Prince George (which began Wednesday,
January 28, 2015) that will run for eleven (11) weeks. Lois Goodman and
John Sherry will be co-facilitating this group, open to practicing group
clinicians in Prince George and the surrounding area. Additionally, we will be
offering a monthly discussion group that will address numerous group topics
beginning in March. There will be a volunteer discussant(s) each month that
will lead the talk followed by a discussion. A few suggested topics that group
members have expressed an interest in are the following: co-facilitation,
countertransference, trauma-informed group work, self-disclosure, roles that
group members play, relationship building, defences clients use to protect
themselves, stages of group, scapegoating in group therapy, time-limited
groups, creative approaches to group therapy, group therapy for adolescents,
group therapy for children, termination in groups, groups for medically ill,
cultural aspects in groups, ethical issues in groups, psychoeducational
groups, CBT groups, and addressing conflicts in groups.

Committee, a ‘walk in the snow’ a la Pierre Trudeau, the judging panel
(members’ identity kept confidential for safety reasons) has made its final
decision.

An interview with Ingrid Söchting, PhD
Dr. Söchting (pronounced “Sook-ting") is the Clinic Director of UBC Psychology
Clinic and was previously chief psychologist for 17 years in an outpatient
interdisciplinary mental health program in Vancouver Coastal Health. She is a
Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist by the Canadian Association of Cognitive
and Behavioural Therapies and Certified Group Psychotherapist by the American
Group Psychotherapy Association. She is the author of “Cognitive Behavioral
Group Psychotherapy: Challenges and Opportunities” (2014 John Wiley and
sons). Rowan Sharkey thought it would be interesting to know more about what
inspires someone to write a book about groups and interviewed her for In The
Loop — the interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
