Classification: Part-Time (Temporary). Contractual. There is a potential for the successful candidate to be
recruited for service beyond this date.
Dates: April 22, 2015 to September 8, 2015. On-site requirement: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Location: Mt. Airy Mansion Greenhouse, 9640 Rosaryville Road, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772
Reports to: Greenhouse Manager and the Chief Executive Officer
Compensation: Successful candidate will be paid at $10 per hour, 25 hours per week.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective: This position is responsible for organizing and directing the volunteer program of the plant
nursery at Chesapeake Natives, Inc. at Mt. Airy Mansion Greenhouse. The position interacts with all potential
volunteers, secures their engagement, and supervises their activities. In keeping with CNIs mission of promoting,
protecting and propagating native plants of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, strong candidates will have a
concern for the natural environment and an ability to identify local native plant species or a willingness to learn.
Essential Functions: The successful candidate will 1. Organize, coordinate and manage the recruitment of volunteers for the organization.
2. Train and lead volunteers in plant nursery, gardening, and restoration activities.
3. Maintain updated records on all volunteers, and implement the volunteer recognition.
4. Work with social, civic and local organizations to develop volunteer partnerships.
5. Arrange and attend volunteer meetings. Report to staff on volunteer activities.
6. Maintain the Health and Safety needs and requirements of volunteers.
7. Work with and learn the plants native to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Required Education
1. Bachelor's degree in biological, environmental sciences, arts, or equivalent experience with local flora.
2. First Aid/CPR training certification.
Preferred Experience
1. One or more years successful work experience in environmental science or a related field.
2. Prior experience as volunteer coordinator for public or nonprofit employer.
3. Prior experience creating and implementing volunteer programs and training.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications: None required for this position.
Supervisory Responsibility: This position supervises the volunteer workforce for Chesapeake Natives. It has no
direct staff supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment: The Volunteer Coordinator operates in a professional workplace environment: a plant
nursery, with occasional off-site venues and outside event areas, in various weather conditions. This role uses
standard office equipment such as phones, computers, and printers, and greenhouse equipment, such as soils,
pots, tools, and carts.

functions. Volunteer work is regularly performed on open uneven ground, without pavement, standing, kneeling
and sitting, and in variously confined spaces.
Physical Demands: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of plant nursery management. These include carrying, or
supervising the use of, tools, wheelbarrows, and standard greenhouse materials.
While performing the duties of volunteer coordinator, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The
employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must
frequently lift and/or move objects up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a part-time contract position of up to, but not exceeding, 25
hours per week. Days of work are Tuesday through Saturday.
Regular work days required at the plant nursery are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. with a 30 minute lunch break (18hrs). The remaining 7 hours can be flexibly used at any location.
Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand (off-site sales and presentations).
Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area may be expected.
Work Authorization/Security: Normal legal Greencard requirements. No security clearance necessary.
