Dear Families,
 Holidays: All have returned from the first term holidays refreshed and ready
for another big term. This term will have a number of highlights and dates to
remember including:
 Years 3 and 5 undertaking the annual NAPLAN Assessments (May 12-14)
 Our school athletics day - (May 5)
 Report Writing Day - (May 21)
 Reports and 3-way interviews - (June 24)
 School photos - (June 1)
 Year 5 Camp, Maldon – (April 29-May 1)
 Food Fair: With only one week before the end of term I did not have a lot of
opportunities to congratulate all on a wonderful Fair. It was a terrific community
event. Personally, it was great to catch up with many past students and
families all enjoying being back at school.
The strength of any school is multi-pronged but the support and involvement of
parents in their child's education is a great benefit - mostly to our children.
Parents who are involved know more about what is happening, can share
experiences with their children and the children want parents involved!
The financial benefit, $48,500, is terrific but the pride in being able to operate
an event of this magnitude is a great reflection of our school and it's
community.
 Kids Raffle result: Congratulations to the following children who were the
excited winners of the Kids Raffle drawn at the assembly on the last day of
term 1.

Winner of the Easter Egg raffle was Kim Hamilton.
 Easter Eggs: I realise this occurred last term, but I just wish to again highlight
the positive effect the Easter Eggs have of our senior citizens. We read some
responses from the recipients at assembly but I want to again thank families for
their generosity and thoughtfulness. I received many cards addressed to the
school and individual students, all expressing many thanks.
 Hats: In line with the Anti-Cancer recommendation we will be asking all
children to wear their broad rimmed Chilwell hats until the end of April. We live
in a great country but the effects of the sun’s rays dictate we all take care
during our time in the sun.
 Mothers’ Day: All in the family are aware that this important day is fast
approaching. Now what to give Mum for all those years of support? AN
ENTERTAINMENT BOOK of course.
The 2015-2016 Entertainment Book has just been launched and is for sale for
$55.00 through the office from next Monday.
For those of us who have purchased previously, we are aware of the savings
on cafes, restaurants, hire cars, accommodation etc. If you are not aware of the
range of benefits, we have a display copy of the book in the foyer.

Anzac Day Commemorative Service
On Friday 24th April we will be holding a special commemorative service to
remember the ANZACs who fought in World War 2. As it is the centenary of the
landing at Gallipoli, we would like to extend an invitation to the grandparents and
great-grandparents of our students, to attend our Chilwell ANZAC service.
We will be holding an afternoon tea in the multi-purpose room at 2:00pm, to be
followed by our service at 2:30.
Parent Contribution
A reminder to parents that this payment was due in February.
Statements will be sent home this week. It would be appreciated if
outstanding amounts could be paid as soon as possible.

Numeracy Information….
What is Numeration – an understanding of number concepts, specifically those
understandings and skills needed to model, name, write, read, interpret and use.
The Di Siemon Professional Development day reinforced the need for children to
use the skill of subitisng to help develop numeration. Subitising is being able to
recognise groups of collections without counting and incorporates part/part/whole
relationships. ie. 3 and 3 and 2 is 8
At each year level children are practising subitising by:
Grade Prep:
We are using flash cards to practise subitising. The children say
the number of dots they see then discuss strategies of ‘how they knew’.
Grade One:
Grade one is practising subitising with dots up to 12. The
children are shown a variety of cards with number dots on them very quickly –
one/two seconds for each cards. The children are expected to say the
numbers/dots they see on each card. We want the children to articulate the
strategy they used, ie. 12 is ten and two more, 6 is double three. Discussing
strategies used in Numeracy is a very important skill which children need to
develop.
Grade Two:
We are learning to ‘chunk’ information and seeing parts in the
whole. A strategy we are practicing is to look at the dot pattern for five (for
example) and be aware that this can be seen as four and one, or three and two.
We are also using domino patterns to capture this idea of subitising. Students are
learning to see each side of the domino as individual dots and then both sides as
"one group". Using dominoes is a fun and easy way to practise subitising at home!
Grade Three/Four:
The children in Grades 3 and 4 use dot dice in many of
their warm up games and activities. Being able to quickly visualise and add
groups of dots together reinforces strategies in working with numbers. An example
of a warm up game being played in year 4 at the moment is Around the World.
Two children roll a dot dice each, they need to add the dot dice together and then
come up with the double. The learning focus is about doubling numbers but it also
reinforces the ability to subitise and quickly add numbers together. Card games
also play an important part in developing these subitising skills.
Grade Five:
Grade 5 and 6: will be using subitising as a part of our warm up
to get students visualizing and thinking about number. This will happen as a part
of our warm up to LAF (Learning & Assessment Framework) groups that are
beginning in term 2. The LAF groups will help students develop their ‘multiplicative
thinking’ and will strengthen their ability to problem solve effectively using a range
of strategies.
Grade Six:
The grade 6 students are subitising 3, 4 or more number and dot
cards that are require very quick response times using the team board. We are
using dice from the “Nelson learning objects” on the team board to play a variety
of games requiring mental calculations on numbers. These numbers could be
fractions, decimals or whole numbers. Students have been given a “short cuts”
help sheet which explains a variety of strategies that will assist mental calculations
like doubling, halving, multiplying by 4 and 8, multiplying by 10 , 100 and 1000.
Each day students will be engaged in quick mental arithmetic games that will
reinforce these skills
School House Athletics - Parent Helpers Desperately Needed.

The success of our Athletics Day is greatly dependent on parental assistance, so
we are asking if you can give us a hand at Landy Field on Tuesday 5th of May.
We need parents to assist with the 8 events - marshalling, time keeping, judging
as well as scorers and/r as part of the soup & slice team.The day will go from
being great to the greatest with your assistance. Please complete and return the

2015 School House Athletics - For Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6
On Tuesday 5th of May, the school will be holding its School House Athletics
Carnival at Landy Field, from 9:00am. to 3:00pm.
The cost of the bus fare and hire of Landy Field for the children will be $6.00 per
child – permission form will go home next week.
Parents and guests are warmly welcome to come along and see all the action
throughout the day. Please check next week’s newsletter for the timetable of
events.
Important information.
• Clothing. This is a HOUSE sport so house colours should
be worn if possible. This adds to the spirit of the day.
• Be prepared – warm clothing (tracksuit), coat (wet weather), T.shirt/shorts for
activity.
• All children are expected to participate and all will earn valuable points for their
house.
• Please ensure that your child brings a cut lunch, snacks and drink.
• Children who suffer from asthma are expected to have and be responsible for
their inhalers.
• Correct footwear ie. sports’ shoes (no spikes).
Please feel free to come and watch to help and encourage your child efforts
during the day’s activities.
Traditionally, hot soup and slices have been supplied by a team of
wonderful parents for the staff and helpers on the day. It would be very
much appreciated if someone could take on the co-ordination of this task
this year. Please contact the office ASAP if you can help.

Children are eligible for enrolment if they turn five (5) years of age on or before
30th April 2016. At Chilwell, we will accept enrolments at any time during the
remainder of the year if places are available. To assist with planning for 2016
(particularly grade and staffing arrangements) we ask that parents wishing to enrol
their child call into the school between 9.00 am. and 4.00 pm. during Enrolment
Week. We require proof of age (eg. copy of Extract of Birth Certificate) for your
child and a completed Immunisation Certificate (available from the City of Greater
Geelong Offices or Medicare website).
