SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Order of Worship – 7:45 AM & 10:15 AM
AS WE GATHER – The end of the Easter season is all about love—the love God has manifested
to us in His crucified and risen Son and the love He works in us and through us. The Lord is at
work in His people breaking down walls and barriers by the love of Christ. Through the
proclamation of this Gospel, the world comes to know the love of God for sinners. This love
shows its power as the barrier between Jew and Gentile is transcended by Christ. Without
exception, Christ died and rose for all people. This common life is reflected in our baptismal life
together around the Word and Table of the Lord and in our common witness and confession of
Christ to the world.

O Love, How Deep
0
6.
For us He rose from death again;
For us He went on high to reign;
For us He sent His Spirit here
To guide, to strengthen, and to cheer.
7.
All glory to our Lord and God
For love so deep, so high, so broad;
The Trinity whom we adore
Forever and forevermore.
INVOCATION
P
In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C
Amen.
CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS
P
Let us come before God, to whom all hearts are open and from whom no secrets are hid, and
confess our sins in the name of Him who died and rose again to give us forgiveness and life.
[Silence for meditation and reflection.]
P
C
P
Merciful God,
I confess that I have lived as if God did not matter and as if I mattered most. I have not
honored my Lord’s name as I should; my worship and prayer have faltered. I have not
let His love have its way with me, and my love for others has failed. There are many
whom I have hurt and many whom I failed to help. My thoughts and desires are soiled
with sin. I have sinned against God and against my brothers and sisters. There is no
health in me. Except for the promise of Christ, I could not hope for reconciliation and
peace. Forgive me, renew me, and lead me, O Lord, so that I may delight in Your will
and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all
your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive
you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE
5. How can any praise we offer
Measure all the thanks we owe?
Take our hearts and hands and voices—
Gifts of love we can bestow.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Triune God, to You we sing!

HYMN OF THE DAY
[Prayer requests will be collected at this time.]

SERMON
“IN JESUS’ LOVE”
John 15:9-17
I. We often define “love” in terms of emotion and romance.
II. Jesus defines “love” through sacrifice and service.
APOSTLE'S CREED
C
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ,
His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into
hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at
the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living
and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.

You loved, O Lord, when we could not love. You sent forth Your Son as love incarnate. By
Baptism You made us new in Christ as people of love. Keep us in Christ and equip us to
show forth His love to all people. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You break down all barriers that would divide us from You and from one another. Keep us in
Christ that we may welcome others in Your name with the Gospel of Christ crucified and
risen. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You give us Your Spirit that we may endure temptation and trial and may abide in Christ.
Keep us in Christ that we may bear the good fruit of Your kingdom and show forth the good
works of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You have established Your Church as the community of love. Keep us in Christ by confession
and absolution, by daily contrition and repentance, and by our communion in the flesh and
blood of Christ; bless Your ministers who bring to us Your Means of Grace. Lord, in Your
mercy,
hear our prayer.
You claim all things for Your own, even our world filled with hate, war, violence, and shame.
Keep us in Christ and extend Your protective power over all threatened by injustice and
oppression. Bless the leaders in every nation with wisdom and the desire for peace, freedom,
and justice. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You do not abandon Your people in their hour of need but clothe them with Your love and
guard them in Your peace. Keep us in Christ, especially the sick, those who suffer, the
grieving, and those near death, [especially . . .], that those who abide in You may endure to
eternal life and be kept by Your grace in their hour of need. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray and even our very selves,
trusting in Your mercy through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the
glory forever and ever. Amen.
