SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

AS WE GATHER – This Sunday is a bridge between the Ascension of Our Lord and Pentecost.
This is a time of waiting and yet not without its own purpose. For the disciples, this was a time
of regrouping. The empty spot left by Judas was to be filled by another who was with them a
witness of Christ’s ministry, death, and resurrection. Perhaps we would find it daunting to be a
successor to Judas, but the Church was not focused backwards rather forward looking. One
was chosen, and the Church readied for what God would do on Pentecost. God is still choosing
us, by the voice of the Gospel calling and the waters of Baptism setting us apart as His own
and for His glory.

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Let us come before God, to whom all hearts are open and from whom no secrets are hid, and
confess our sins in the name of Him who died and rose again to give us forgiveness and life.

I confess that I have lived as if God did not matter and as if I mattered most. I have not
honored my Lord’s name as I should; my worship and prayer have faltered. I have not
let His love have its way with me and my love for others has failed. There are many
whom I have hurt and many whom I failed to help. My thoughts and desires are soiled
with sin. I have sinned against God and against my brothers and sisters. There is no
health in me. Except for the promise of Christ, I could not hope for reconciliation and
peace. Forgive me, renew me, and lead me, O Lord, so that I may delight in Your will
and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all
your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive
you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

“GOD’S CHOSEN ONES”
Acts 1:12-26
I. It’s easy to feel discouraged when we’re not chosen for a team or a promotion or new job.
II. Our identity as God’s people rests on being chosen by Him to be His children.

I believe in One God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things
visible and invisible. And in One Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very
God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things
were made; Who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was
incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made Man; and was crucified
also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He
rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right
hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the
dead, Whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and

You promised, O Lord, not to abandon Your people but to guard, guide, and lead us. Send us
Your Holy Spirit to guard us in Your truth, guide us through Your Word, and lead us to fulfill
the purpose for which You send us forth in the world. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You chose Matthias to be part of the company of the apostles. In Baptism You chose us to
belong to You and to be Your people in Christ. Continue to call through Your Word and
incorporate those called into Your Church by Baptism and faith, that we may have many
partners in witness before the world. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You sent Your Son to unite us to You. Give to Your whole Church unity of faith, unity of heart,
and unity of mission. Bless the ministry of all pastors and church workers, and raise up those
who will speak Your Word in the days to come. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
You saw a world in need and refused to abandon us to the forces of our own destruction.
Continue to speak love, peace, unity, and justice to every place where war, violence, and fear
afflict the nations. Bless our own president and all elected and appointed leaders even as

You bless the leaders of every people and every place for the sake of the Gospel. Lord, in
Your mercy,
hear our prayer.

You sent Your Son to be tempted in every way like us. Guard our hearts against temptations,
keep us in the day of trouble, and rescue us from the pit of despair. Use us to reach out to the
poor and needy with the love of Christ and the resources of Your grace. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Our Savior bore the wounds of a people sick with sin and death. Help us to trust in You in
every need of healing for our bodies and for our hearts. Hear us who pray on behalf of all the
sick, the suffering, the grieving, and the dying, [especially . . .]. May all who cry to You in their
need know Your healing and grace as their comfort and their joy. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Your Son set His Table and fed His apostles with His own flesh for the life of the world and
His blood shed for the forgiveness of their sins. Bless us and our communion in the body and
blood of Christ today that what we receive with our lips we may keep faithfully in our lives to
the day of Christ’s coming again. Lord, in Your mercy,
hear our prayer.
Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your
mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to

His resurrection appeared openly to all His disciples and in their sight was taken up into
heaven that He might make us partakers of His divine life. Therefore with angels and
archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name,

Blessed are You, O Lord, our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and
given Your only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
eternal life. Having revealed Your glory in the face of Your only-begotten Son, who suffered,
died, and rose for our salvation, You have exalted Him to the highest majesty at Your right
hand, that He might graciously fill all things. Grant us faithfully to eat and drink this Holy
Supper, trusting our reigning Savior Jesus, who, though unseen in His ascended glory, is
here present to save by His body and blood.

As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He
comes.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to
drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed
death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven,
and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to
pray:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the

Let us pray. Lord, it is not that we did choose You but You chose us and washed us clean in
the waters of our Baptism and bestowed upon us Your Spirit that we might believe. Give us
every comfort and assurance that we may not lose sight of the goal and outcome of our faith
but endure through every trouble and trial to the day of Christ’s coming again in glory;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
