Jacalyn Caron
James Atwater
services Friday
James R. Atwater, 72 of
Ferndale, WA died June 12.
He was born Aug. 7, 1942 to
Kelly and Ruth (Hite)
Atwater. He attended schools
in Emily, Crosby-Ironton, and
Aurora-Hoyt Lakes, graduating there in 1960. Retired
U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1961 to 1981.
Trained in heavy ground
radar. He served two tours of
duty in Thailand and two
tours of duty in Vietnam. He
also served with radar sites in
Montana,
Washington,
Minnesota, and retired from
Luke Air Force Base, AZ. He
then worked for sixteen years
on oil tankers and at petroleum storage facilities in
Ferndale, WA.
On Dec. 11, 1971 he married Sheila Naylor in Bertha.
The family moved to Custer,
WA after he retired from the
Air Force. In August of 2000,
he was very instrumental in
bringing
the
Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Moving
Wall to Hovander Park in
Ferndale, WA. Jim loved his
country, loved a good joke,
loved a party, and loved his
family.
Atwater was preceded in
death by his parents, an infant
brother, Richard and his
daughter Jeannette “Charlie”
Aiken.
He is survived by his wife
of 43 years, Sheila; daughter
and son-in-law, Cheryl and
Henry Atwater-Miller; four
grandchildren; sisters, Judy
Zettervall of Brainerd and
Elaine Atwater of Emily; sister and brother-in-law Polly
and Randy Balken of Erhard;
and brothers and sisters-inlaw Don and Peggy and Chas
and Andrea; brothers Ed, and
Paul Atwater of Emily and
numerous nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends that were
like family to him.
Memorial services will be
held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July
3 at the Emily Wesleyan
Church. Burial will be at the
Pine Ridge Cemetery in
Emily with military honors
given by the Myrin-James
American Legion Post #443,
of Ironton. Reception will
follow.

the Koop Funeral Home in
Crosby.
Services for
Trilby Witter
Trilby D. Witter, 87, of
Merrifield, died Thursday, June
25 at Good Samaritan
Village—Woodland
in
Brainerd.
She was born February 16,
1928 in Emily, the daughter of
Deward and Louise (Hughes)
Hawley. She was raised in
Little Pine and graduated from
Crosby—Ironton High School
in 1946. Witter worked as a
nanny in the Minneapolis–St.
Paul area as a young girl. She
met and married Clarence
Hamilton of Crosby in 1947
and they made their home in
Crosby. Trilby lived on West
Twin Lake and worked at the
state hospital for many years.
Later, she married Clark Witter
and they moved from West
Twin Lake to Bonnie Lake and
later to Serpent Lake. She
painted with oils and did pastels as well as making dioramas
for taxidermists and paintings
for a filmmaker. She enjoyed
flower gardening and carving.
She was also an avid reader.
She was preceded in death
by her parents: Deward and
Louise Hawley; husbands:
Clark Witter and Clarence
Hamilton; and other family
members: Wanda Hawley, Elda
Miltz, Irene Libby, Ione Huff,
Milton “Bud” Strause, Bertha
Hawley; and a granddaughter.
She will be missed by her
children and spouses: Roger
Hamilton of Merrifield; Terry
and Claudia Hamilton, of
Crystal; John Hamilton of
Merrifield; daughter-in-law:
Vickie Peterson of Brainerd;
stepchildren: Leon and Cathy
Witter, of Hutchinson and
Mark and Ronnie Witter of
Dalbo; many grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; siblings: Maryetta Andrews of
Emily; Faye Traynor of
Tucson, AZ; Lynn and William
Glenn of Emily; Retha “Billie”
Hawley of Merrifield; Kris and
Norman Olson of Brainerd;
Richard and JoAnne Hawley of
Little Pine and Norman
“Rusty” and Nan Hawley, of
Little Pine; and many, many
nieces and nephews and
dozens of cousins and other relatives.
A Celebration of Life
Gathering will be held
Wednesday, July 1 from 5 to 7
p.m. at the Brenny Funeral
Chapel in Crosslake.

Geraldine Mattson Belseth, age 91, beloved mother and grandmother of
Crosby, formerly of South
Minneapolis, passed away
on Saturday, June 27 in
Crosby.
Gerry cherished her faith,
enjoyed her family and
friends, and loved trying new
recipes, traveling, reading
and writing letters.
She was preceded in
death by her parents,
Annette
and
William
Wegener; loving husbands,
James Mattson and Glenn
Belseth; and a brother,
Howard Wegener.
She is survived by all her
beloved children, Peter
(Janelle) Mattson, Peggy
(Kevin) O’Neill, Paul (Jill)
Mattson; grandchildren, Jim
and Elizabeth Mattson,
Brooke and Cally O’Neill;
stepchildren, Beverly (Wally)
Gulbrandson, Mike (Diane)
Belseth, Marjorie Nelson,
Mary (Gerry) Giese and
Bruce (Jodi) Belseth and
numerous Belseth grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
held at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Crosby
(600 Fourth Sreet SW) on
Thursday, July 2 at 11 a.m.
Visitation will be on
Wednesday at the Koop
Funeral Home in Crosby
from 4 to 7 p.m. and one
hour prior to the services at
the church on Thursday. A
private interment will be at
the Fort Snelling National
Cemetery in Minneapolis. In
lieu of flowers, memorial
may be made to the
Immanuel Lutheran Church
or Christian Children’s Fund.

The menu at the Senior
Citizen Dining Center program sites for July 6-10 follows. Due to scheduling
changes, all sites will have
the same menu, but not all
sites will be served their
meals at the same time.
Participants in the meal
program are asked to make
reservations before 1 p.m. on
the day before they plan to
attend. For reservations, call

Noon meals will be delivered to your Crosby, Deerwood
or Ironton home for the low
cost of $4.50 per meal.
Service is Monday through
Friday. Weekend meals available (Thursday delivery).
Delivery is free. This service
is available to all ages.

Edward Engen
Virginia Carmela Zarr, 96,
of Deerwood, died on June 23
at the Lake Ridge Care Center
in Buffalo. She was born on
Oct. 23, 1918 in Crosby to
Vencenzo and Mickelina
(Talarico) Rocca. After
WWII, she married Wesley
(Mike) Zarr in Crosby. She
owned and operated Gena's
Beauty Salon in St. Paul for
several years. After retirement, she moved back to the
Cuyuna Range and pursued
her passions; gardening, canning, hunting, hair styling and
spending time with family.
She was a member of St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Deerwood, CCW and the
Knights
of
Columbus
Auxiliary.
Preceding her in death are
her parents; husband, Mike;
one daughter, Regina Hook;
two brothers, Frank Rocca
and James Rocca; five sisters,
Santina Rocca, Mary Fitch,
Rose Rocca, Ritha Glass and
Bernice Woods.
She is survived by one
son, Michael (Julie Jensen)
Zarr of Anchorage, AK; one
brother, John Rocca of
Deerwood; two sisters,
Angeline Cronk of St. Paul
and Joann Bordwell of
Deerwood; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild.
Funeral services have
been held.

Edward James Engen, 77,
of Outing, died on June 24, at
Essentia St. Joseph’s Medical
Center in Brainerd. He was
born on February 25, 1938 in
St. Paul to Hartwick and Greta
(Weber) Engen. He married
the love of his life, Judith Ann
McCloskey on May 18, 1957.
He was retired U.S. Postal
Service employee with 30
years of service to the St. Paul,
Brainerd and Outing areas.
He was a member of Our
Saviors Lutheran Church in
Outing.
Preceding him in death are
his parents and one sister,
Mary Alexander.
He is survived by his wife
of 58 years, Judy; a son, Scott
Engen of Brainerd and a son
and daughter-in-law, Michael
and
Cindy
Engen
of
Merrifield; a daughter Lorelie
Huesmann of Baxter and a
daughter and son-in-law, Lynn
and Steve Slettedahl of Elk
River; a brother, Gerald Engen
of Stillwater and a brother and
sister-in-law,
Robert and
Diane Engen of Fairview
Township; a sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Steven
Newcomer of Apple Valley
and a sister, Judyann Engen of
Crosslake; nine grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services have been
held. If desired, memorials
are preferred to Our Saviors
Lutheran Church in lieu of
flowers.

boat landing will be closed
from 12:01 a.m. to midnight
on Saturday, July 4 at Crosby
Memorial Park on Serpent
Lake. Boaters are urged to
use the landing on the east
