2014 DRINKING WATER REPORT
The 2014 Annual Report on Steinbach’s Drinking Water
Quality is now available. The Report summarizes the
Utility’s ability to produce safe potable water and meet
provincial regulations. The Report is available for viewing on
www.steinbach.ca or at City Hall. Questions can be referred
to the Waterworks Department at 204.346.6214.
STORMREADY MEMBERS NEEDED
The City of Steinbach Storm Ready
Team is currently seeking volunteers
to act as weather spotters in times
of severe weather, such as a tornado. Spotters must be
residents of Steinbach or live within a 10 km radius of
Steinbach. Each team consists of four members and is
“on call” for one week per month during the months of May
thru September. Spotters are trained both in-house and by
Environment Canada.

COMMUNITY COMPOST DEPOTS
EVERYONE!
Bring compostable items to Steinbach’s Community Compost Depots. Residents are
encouraged to use compostable yard waste bags.
Woodlawn School (411 Henry St.),
Stonybrook Middle School by the track
(77 Lumber Ave.) and on Deerfield Trail.
Every Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm, beginning
May 30, 2015 until mid October.
This compost material is composted at the Landfill and used in the City’s parks and gardens. Compost is also available for the public
to pick-up at no charge!

PUT YOUR DRAINS ON A FAT-FREE DIET
HAZARDOUS WASTE DEPOT
The City of Steinbach is pleased to provide residents of
Steinbach and area with the opportunity to dispose of
household hazardous waste items year round!
Please have all fluids secured in a sealed and labelled
container. Residential quantities only!
Common household items accepted include:
• Disinfectants, bleach, ammonia, abrasive powders,
mildew & rust removers
• Kerosene, lighter fluid
• Paint, spray paint, lacquers, solvents, turpentine,
epoxies, acrylics, wood preservatives, furniture
polish/wax
• Hair dyes, hair sprays, medicine, polish remover
Fats, oils, and greases (FOG) can build up in sewer pipes
and your plumbing, clog your drains and put your home at
risk of sewage back-ups. The FOG builds up in wastewater
collection and treatment infrastructure too, causing sewer
mains to back up and equipment to break down.
Grease is often poured down the sink as a warm liquid.
As the liquid cools, grease solidifies and causes build-up
inside the pipes to restrict the flow of wastewater. This can
cause raw sewage to back up into a home and result in an
unpleasant and costly clean-up for the homeowner. There
are also significant health and safety risks for individuals
cleaning up sewage as well as city wastewater treatment
operators.
Each year, considerable resources are spent cleaning
grease-clogged sewer main pipes sewage lift stations and
equipment throughout the City of Steinbach’s wastewater
collection and treatment system.
Sources of Fats, Oils and Greases
• Household cleaners: window, toilet, oven, drain, allpurpose, rug, upholstery, septic tank
Grease is a common by-product of cooking and is the term
used for animal fats and vegetable oils. Meats, sauces,
gravies, salad dressings, deep fried dishes, dairy products,
soups, chili, pastas, pastries, butter and margarine are all
foods that contain fats, oils, and greases.
• Mothballs, rodent poison, ant & wasp spray, insecticides,
fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides

• All batteries, fluorescent and CFL bulbs
• Automotive: car batteries, waxes, polishes, antifreeze,
gasoline, brake & transmission fluids

HAZARDOUS WASTE DEPOT HOURS
Landfill summer hours:
Monday to Friday: 8:00 am - 8:00 pm
Saturday: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
Hazardous Waste Depot hours:
Tuesday - Saturday: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Steinbach Landfill and Depot are
located at 104 Hanover Road East.
Do’s
• DO scrape food scraps from plates, pots, pans, utensils,
grills, and cooking surfaces and bring to the City of
Steinbach Landfill for composting (excluding meat and
bones).
• DO wipe out greasy pots, pans, and utensils with paper
towel before putting them into the sink.
• DO pour grease, fat, or lard into a clean juice carton
with the top cut off. Let the material solidify by storing
in the refrigerator or freezer before disposing of it.
• DO use a strainer in the sink to catch food scraps and
other solids.
• DO inform family members, friends, and neighbors
about the problem with FOG in the sewer system and
how to keep it out.
Don’ts
• DO NOT pour grease down the sink or into the toilet.
• DO NOT rinse grease down the sink.
• Hot water is not the solution. Once the grease and water
cool, the grease deposits onto the sides of the sewer
pipe, blocking them over time.
• DO NOT use cloth towels or rags to wipe off plates or
clean greasy dishware. When the towels are washed,
the grease ends up in the sewer.
