2015 Cooperative Middle School Summer Enrichment Course Selection Guide The Cooperative Middle School Summer Enrichment Program offers a variety of one-week teacher-developed programs that extend beyond the typical school curriculum. Students are provided the opportunity to discover new talents, develop new skills, sharpen established skills, and study topics that they find interesting. Courses are open to students in grades 6-8 and incoming 6th graders. Meeting dates and times are set by the instructor. Classes must have a minimum enrollment of 10 students to run. Financial aid is available. Unless specified, classes will be held at the Cooperative Middle School (CMS). Course Descriptions Ukulele Jam Camp Instructors: Mr. Andy Inzenga, Mr. Brian Beakey, and Mr. Stephen McDonald Teacher bios: Mr. Inzenga is a music/chorus teacher at CMS. Mr. Beakey teaches grade 6 Science at CMS. Mr. McDonald is a CMS guidance counselor. Meeting dates: June 24-30 & July 1-9 Meeting times: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Course description: Learn the unique sounds of the ukulele, the beloved Hawaiian instrument, that has become incredibly popular. Students will learn the history of the ukulele and how to choose, purchase, and tune the instrument. Students will learn basic chords to play complete songs in a group setting. The instructors will provide ukuleles for the students unless students prefer to bring their own. Join us for a fun summer opportunity and together we be jamin”. Fee: $150 Adventures in Japanese Instructor: Mr. Nori Ichizawa Teacher bio: Sensei Ichizawa is a cross-cultural expert. He is an experienced Japanese language/culture teacher in America and English teacher in Japan. He has successfully directed and accompanied numerous exchange trips for groups of Japanese and American high school and college students. Sensei enjoys teaching Japanese at Exeter High School. He was a baseball player during his junior high school years and to this day he loves to watch and listen to baseball games, especially Red Sox games. Meeting dates: June 29-July 3 Meeting times: 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. Course description: Do you want to impress your parents and friends? Do you want to make delicious foods from another country? Are you ready to be immersed in everything Japanese? Then, this is the course for you. Besides learning the Japanese language, you will make Japanese foods such as sushi rolls and encounter many aspects of Japanese culture through games, songs, folk tales, crafts, traditional sports, Anime, and films. You will learn how to write Japanese calligraphy (Japanese brush writing). By the end of the week, you will be able to have a simple conversation in Japanese. THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD AT EXETER HIGH SCHOOL. Fee: $150 Speak Spanish All Day Long! ¡Hablamos Español! Instructors: Señora Tove Stigum and Señora Tressa Stanizzi Teacher bios: Sra. Stigum and Sra. Stanizzi have traveled and lived in Spanish-speaking countries. They are very eager to share these experiences with their students. They love the Spanish language and culture and hope to share their interests. Come join them for a fun summer of Spanish immersion. Meeting dates: July 20-July 24 Meeting times: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Course description: Spending 4 hours a day speaking Spanish will enhance students’ ability to use their hard won skills. Students will not only practice the language, they will eat tapas, learn salsa dance, listen to Spanish music, put on a play, read stories, sing authentic children’s songs, observe nature, and create a simulation of various real life situations...all in Spanish. Fee: $150 + $20 (snacks and cafe activities) = $170 French Enrichment Instructor: Monsieur Scott Battey Teacher bio: Monsieur Battey has been teaching French and Spanish for more than 20 years at the high school level. He has been teaching French at Exeter High School since 2008 and previously taught at Dover High School. Monsieur Battey lives in Raymond with his wife and 2 children, Olivia and Mac. Meeting dates: July 20-24 Meeting times: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Course description: This one-week course will help students of French improve their skills and give them confidence in speaking French. Students will strengthen their knowledge of French grammar through interactive speaking and writing activities. Students will improve their phonetic skills through listening comprehension and pronunciation coaching. Students will acquire an in-depth knowledge of French culture and gain confidence in their ability to speak French in preparation for next year’s course. THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD AT EXETER HIGH SCHOOL. Fee: $150 + $30 for food and drink = $180 Public Speaking Instructor: Mrs. Carol Trecosta Teacher bio: Ms. Trecosta is a school counselor at CMS. She will show students how to make their experience in and out of school more comfortable and enjoyable. Meeting dates: August 3-7 Meeting times: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Course description: Does anxiety get the best of you when you have to talk in front of others? Have you ever wished you could engage in classroom discussions or give a speech in your class without feeling like you were panicking or going to pass out? In this class you will learn stress management strategies and how to present with more confidence. Fee: $150
