Life Cycles Lesson Plan
Lesson Plan Idea Format
Grade Level & Subject Area: 3rd Grade/ Science
Standards/Framework (Common Core, NAEYC, Mid-level ….):
Science Curriculum Frameworks

LS.3.3.3
Differentiate among complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis, and
embryonic development
Theme/Series of Lessons (if Not applicable, put N/A. If it is part of a series, of lessons, tell
me, give a BRIEF description of the overall and tell me where this particular lesson fits):
Series of Lessons. Students will have lecture for two days. On the third day, Photo Story will be
used as an assessment. When we are completely done with collecting data, we will use Windows
Movie Maker to the outcome.
Time (is this a 1 day 50 minute lesson, 5 day 1 hour lesson, once a week over a month
lesson….):
The entire lesson will take a few weeks to complete. The lecture part will take three days as a 50
minute lesson. The second part will take place as the butterfly and dragonfly go through their life
cycle.
What do the students already know? (This could be the Intro or they have learned
information before starting this lesson):
Students should have a some background knowledge about the life cycles that every living thing
experiences. The three life cycles are complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis, and
embryonic development. In this lesson, students will gain knowledge about the three cycles and
compare and contrast. Students are to document the different changes in their journals.
Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish):

Students will learn to differentiate between complete and incomplete metamorphosis and
embryonic development. Students will observe firsthand the different stages that the
butterfly and dragonfly from start to finish.
Materials:
2 Jars
Butterfly/ Dragonfly at first stage
Cotton
Branches
Leafs
Textbooks
Journals
Photo Story
Procedure:




Class will start as a lecture. Photo Story will be used to enhance the lesson. Students will
see extra examples as we go along with our textbooks.
Students will learn about each cycle. The two that will be used as examples in class will
be incomplete and complete metamorphosis.
As the lecture ends, the prepared jars with the insects will be brought out. Students will
begin documentation. They will turn their journals in daily after each observation.
When the final stage is complete, students will finish their documentation and turn them
in for a completion grade.
Assessment (How will the students’ show you that the objective has been met):

Students will complete a Life Cycle Journal. Students will be given the opportunity daily
to observe the jars. In the journal, they will describe any changes that they’ve noticed
from each jar. They will then compare and contrast to the other jar. We will openly
discuss if the students noticed anything different. When the final stage is complete,
students will write a three separate paragraphs explaining the three different stages using
classroom experiments.
A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be
Included:

Class will begin as a lecture. On the first day, we will discuss complete metamorphosis
and incomplete metamorphosis. On the second day, we will discuss embryonic
development. On the third day, Photo Story will be used to compare as well as
differentiate the three life cycles. When the lesson is complete, the prepared jars with our
future butterfly and dragonfly will be produced to the class. Students will use their
journals provided to document each insect. These journals will be used when students
have to write about the three life cycles. Daily, students will have a chance to observe and
discuss their observations. The journals will be turned in as a completion grade after
insects have completed their last stage. I will document the process of each insect and
reveal it to the class as a film.
