Development & Communications Coordinator ABOUT COLLEGESPRING CollegeSpring is a nonprofit that mobilizes experienced educators and near-peer mentors to help high school students from low-income backgrounds achieve the SAT scores, college acceptances, and futures they deserve. Since 2008, more than 8,000 students from 40 high schools in Northern and Southern California have completed our program, and we recently launched programs in New York, expanding our annual reach to 3,500. Our students improve their SAT scores an average of nearly 200 points and we have raised over $5 million, to date, from a wide variety of institutional and individual donors. CollegeSpring is an entrepreneurial organization in an exciting stage of growth: we have been recognized by the White House as a promising program to address the college achievement gap, and expect to reach 10,000 additional students over the next three years through the next phase of our strategic growth which launches this fall. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The Development & Communications Coordinator will provide support across many areas of development and communications including donor research and qualification, basic grant writing, event logistics, and donor correspondence in service of CollegeSpring’s organizationwide fundraising goals. They will also provide critical back-office support to the communications and development team while helping to improve business process and efficiencies. This position reports to the Director of Development and works closely with the development and communications team and senior management, including the CEO. This individual will have the opportunity to help chart the course of a dynamic and quickly scaling non-profit organization. The role will add much needed capacity to a high-performing and successful development and communications team that has recently secured significant investments from institutional funders such as the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation (multi-year capacity building grant in excess of $900,000) and Kresge Foundation (multi-year capacity building grant for $750,000), as well as the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Brin Wojcicki Foundation, and the Heckscher Foundation for Children. A strong base of support from individuals is additionally present in the CollegeSpring portfolio. The Development & Communications Coordinator has broad interaction and responsibility across the team and organization as a whole, and will contribute valuable capacity, input, and execution to the existing team. Given CollegeSpring’s size and the unique stage in its evolution, this is an ideal role in which to contribute and learn more about the full range of development activities and strategy, from research, donor stewardship, writing, and systems, to contributing to the creation of a capital campaign from the ground up. RESPONSIBILITIES Support CollegeSpring’s fundraising activities across sites and portfolios in service of reaching overall organization-wide fundraising goals. Contribute to and learn about the full range of development activities from research through closing gifts. www.collegespring.org | 1 Research and identify individual, corporate, and foundation prospects that are aligned with CollegeSpring’s mission. Determine which are appropriate to approach for region-specific programmatic support and which are likely to support headquarters and/or capacity building initiatives. In consultation with the Director of Development and team, determine outreach and engagement for each donor. Participate in weekly development meetings with national team, regional executive directors, and CEO to contribute to regional pipeline development and knowledge sharing. Work in partnership with the Director of Development and team to advance institutional donor portfolio through research and assisting in the grant writing process. Receive all gifts and work with finance/operations team to ensure proper recording and deposit of funds. Ensure proper allocation of gifts to respective region/project such that finance is able to accurately report on expenditures. Develop and strengthen knowledge management practices across the organization by leveraging Salesforce to capture knowledge, track fundraising progress, and ensure regular and meaningful donor engagement in partnership with the full national development team. Comprehensively track and record all gifts/opportunities through Salesforce to ensure Director of Development and CEO have clear insight into revenue pipeline at all times. Work across regions to ensure regional staff are doing similar capture. Assist Communications Manager with copy writing for newsletters and other CollegeSpring communications collateral. Work with Communications Manager to assess and improve messaging and storytelling as needed for CollegeSpring communications. Manage social media outreach and updates. Work with Communications Manager to research and identify PR and speaking opportunities for CEO. Assist with external event logistics and planning as appropriate. Keep abreast of current trends in the nonprofit fundraising community and of the priorities and initiatives of potential funders who are likely to support CollegeSpring’s mission, values and goals. Ensure compliance with all applicable legal and ethical standards and guidelines. Other administrative and office duties as needed. QUALIFICATIONS Passion for the mission of CollegeSpring and belief that a focused intervention (SAT score improvement and near-peer mentoring) at a critical point in a student’s life can change that student’s trajectory. Strong written communication and interpersonal skills, innovative and creative thinking and the ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. The position demands attention to detail and an ability to engage with stakeholders across the organization at all levels. Strong research skills to identify and qualify prospective individual and institutional donors and communications opportunities. Knowledge of the funding landscape in college access and education reform is ideal but not necessary. www.collegespring.org | 2 Ability to self-direct at times and creatively problem solve where and when a new course must be charted. Prior fundraising/development, communications, marketing, sales, or account management work experience preferred. Entrepreneurial spirit with a desire to work with an ambitious team in a rapidly changing environment. COMPENSATION Salary commensurate with experience.
