Hall County passed a
SPLOST amendment
in March and one of
the needs listed was
additional tennis
courts. Now the commissioners are wavering on this commitment. Anyone faced
this issue before?
CVTA reports that the Tennis Center of Georgia at Rome will open in June of 2016—
featuring 51 hard outdoor courts to be built in Phase 1 and an additional 62 outdoor courts
and 6 indoor courts in Phase.
CVTA—The latest Tennis 101 program in Rome resulted in 35 new adult players and 8 junior players.
CVTA—The Rome Tennis Academy is starting its 2nd year in operation and has increased
participation from 30 players to more than 140 players. Summer camps and tournaments are
planned for this summer.
CVTA—The Redd’s, Light, and Blue league sponsored by the North Ga Distributing Co was
conducted as a fundraiser non-USTA league and was quite successful in getting returning
players back on the courts.


MTA would like to welcome their new president, Mel
Locklear, recruited by Chris Bussert.
NEGTA awarded $1000 college scholarships to two outstanding high school seniors, Beau Millwood and Leia Rylee.

NEGTA partnered with Brenau University tennis coach and
team to sponsor two events for Special Pops Tennis affiliated
with the state Special Olympics program.
COTA will be hosting the USTA League Tennis Adult 40 &
Over State Championships in Athens May 29-June 1. They
will also begin the creation of marketing videos along with
starting a low-income youth summer tennis program with

CORTA just started another series of junior beginner clinics for players ages 5-18 in an effort
to provide instruction on the fundamentals and enable participants to become active in other
junior programs.

CORTA will be hosting the USTA League Tennis Adult 40 & Over State Championships in
Columbus May 29-June 1. They will also be hosting the “Return to Server” Southern NTRP
Clay Court Championships July 29-August 02 and the Burger King USTA Southern Open
Boys & Girls September 5-8.

 MCTA hosted a kids play day on May 1 with over 30 kids in attendance. The play day was
the kick off for the Junior Team tennis league and to get kids on the courts.
 MCTA will be presenting a $2000 check to the Boys and Girls Club director to be used to do
a tennis program this summer for the kids.
 BTA will be hosting the USTA Adult League Tennis
Combo Championships in October.
 BTA implemented an adult beginner’s tennis clinic this
fall/winter and have 10 new 2.5 ladies ready to play in a 5.0


combo season this summer.
Bainbridge hosted the Georgia/Alabama 10, 12, &14 age group and had a record number
of juniors in attendance.
The Flint River League will be hosting its first “Meeting of the 3 Boards” on Aug 1st.
District 8
 SATA sponsored 2015 Savannah Challenger event was held
April 22 at The Landings Club. Over 100 tennis players gathered
together from throughout the surrounding area for a morning of
tennis drills and match play led by the local tennis pros, fitness
activities and stretching techniques conducted by The Landings
fitness team, fantastic raffle giveaways, and a scrumptious lunch
at the outdoor café. Prior to the event, players were greeted at
SATA’s newest addition to our marketing program – the SATA
tent and display. The presentation included a large tent with the
SATA logo, a table runner, two vertical six foot displays showing pictures from our junior, Special Pops, wheelchair, and adult programs, and a ten foot feather flag with “Play
Tennis Savannah.”
 Special Pops Savannah, a (non-profit) organization dedicated to enriching the lives
of individuals with intellectual challenges, is just completing its spring season. For a

 SATA HOSTS SPECIAL OLYMPICS TENNIS
TRIALS—On April 8th the Savannah Area Tennis Association brought smiles to many faces as over 65 athletes participated in the Special Olympics
Tennis Trials. This year students from Beach, Jenkins, Islands, and Windsor Forest High
Schools, as well as Southwest Middle School excitedly gathered for the Opening Ceremonies.
As the Trials began the courts were filled with children, volunteers and instructors – everyone
trying their best to create joy through tennis. The pride of accomplishment was everywhere.
The competitions were followed by a pizza party, treats and, of course, awards.
